Tick, Tick...BOOM! is the autobiographical musical by playwright Jonathan Larson. It's the story of an aspiring composer in New York City who is worried he made the wrong career choice, whilst navigating the pressures of love and friendship.
When I tell you this movie moved me EVEN MORE THAN ENCANTO I am NOT KIDDING! This amazing work by the great Lin-Manuel Miranda in his feature directorial debut touched my creative heart soo much and I can't wait for you to experience it. It brought me so much joy and moved me to tears. I share a lot of my own experience as an aspiring actor and I really hope it encourages you! I love you all and really hope you enjoy!
At the time of filming this I had no idea it was an autobiographical musical by Larson himself, I only knew this was a film based on his life. I was quickly corrected through watching the film, so please forgive any incorrect early remarks.

@Dave Smith Yeah, the actor who played Sondheim in the film had a conflict with his schedule and he couldn't record the lines, so Lin asked Sondheim to do it. But after reading the lines, Sondheim said that they were not what he would say to Jon, and asked if he could rewrite them himself.

Concerning Andrew's stage training: He is actually a VERY accomplished stage actor even before this. He only learned the singing and playing piano part for TTB, but he actually already has a Tony. Lin actually saw him performing the main part in "Angels in America" (for which he did win his Tony), which is a 7-hour (!) play, most of which Andrew's character is frantically yelling at the audience. Lin saw him in that and thought that even if he doesn't know how to sing (he didn't know if he did or not at the time) this shouldn't pose a problem, as the dude is yelling at people several shows a week for 7 hours straight and his vocal cords are still not destroyed

Probably helped that he hooked Andrew up with the right vocal Coach and the guy has enough confidence to say he can sing given a year of preparation.

Lin credits Jonathan so much for his success.. He's stated in many interviews without Jonathan there is no Lin musicals.. Lin only used Jonathan original songs and didn't add his own cuz he wanted it to state "music and score written by Jonathan Larson... So as you stated we literally watched the tick tock boom off Broadway, and suburbia screening while watching the hectic week up to the screening Jonathan went through... So amazing I've watched it 8 times...

My favorite little bit of trivia from this was that Sondheim didn't like the original answering machine message (post workshop) they had written, so he requested that he be able to write it and deliver it. Not surprisingly Lin agreed.

That was a beautiful reaction, and so moving -- not to mention relatable -- to see someone who actually not only connects with the story personally but caught all the little bits of theatrical chaos and all the cameos in it. Once you see Rent, whether you choose to watch the Pro shot or the movie (Or hey, honestly, both! I happen to really enjoy the movie, but I think seeing the stage version is also certainly a thing you should do) you'll definitely be able to appreciate more of the details in this film too, in regards to where a lot of the inspo for that musical came from. Lin added a lot of really clever references. Rent is a modern retelling of Puccini's opera La Boheme, set in early 90s NYC, but it's also very much inspired by the world he inhabited and people he knew, as well.

The love and respect for the art of musicals and musical writing in this movie is just simply astonishing. It brought a smile to my face, even though I began to be invested in the world of musical and Broadway quite recently. The way Lin portrayed all these emotions, themes and characters is just another work of art in his growing repertoire of masterpieces.

If you do decide to watch Rent, I reccomend watching the proshot of the final performance on Broadway in 2008 (RENT: Filmed Live on Broadway) over the movie. Yes, the one positive is that the movie has most of the original cast, but for a movie musical, it's a pretty clunky adaptation. The show on Broadway was originally a sung-through rock opera with very little spoken dialogue. Chris Columbus, the director of the movie, made the decision to cut sections of the sung-through bits to turn them into spoken dialogue....but it's ripped word-for-word from what they sing in the Broadway show anyway, and it sounds _really_ awkward!!! The movie also cut out -- imo -- two of the best songs in the show. The proshot has a _great_ cast, and you can see the musical in its truest form. Plus, quite a few members of the OBC come out to perform during the curtain call anyway, so 🤷‍♂

I'm so glad I found your reaction. It's wonderful for me to find someone who connects so personally to a movie like this as I do. Some cool details about this movie: the apartment was a complete replica of Jon's real life apartment the voicemail you hear at the end is Sondheim's actual voice in the crowd during "Louder Than Words" Jon's real life sister can be seen in the audience the scene in the park during "Why" Andrew sang and played the piano live and the neighbors Michelle and Gay in "Boho Days" were actual friends of Jon's, . =)

About "Sunday". First of all, THANK YOU, first PROPER reaction to all of these people. Second, you probably didn't catch them as you haven't seen RENT, but all the three "bums" are from it's original cast, and the real Jonathan would meet all of them in like 3 years after his staged monologue.

Also, all the "focus group" people are also Broadway stars. This movie really has almost zero roles that aren't played by either Lin's friends, IRL Johnathan"s friends or actual Broadway legends. For example of you look at the panel of authors in his writing workshop there is the actual Stephen effing Schwartz. And Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton's musical director. And SO. MANY. MORE. Including by the way 3 winners of a grant given to young aspiring creators by the Jonathan Larson fund.

I was actually wondering: I'm contemplating on making a (possibly) huge video in Russian that explains TTB, RENT and Larson's life, because the amount of info about the musical culture and this part of it specifically is almost nonexistent of you only speak Russian. Could I use your reaction to Sunday, with credits and links of course, to illustrate what this scene feels like for those who actually know what Broadway is?)

As a musical theatre actor… tons of cruises are absolute dogshit for your mental health. Paying your bills doesn’t mean much when you’d rather jump off the ship than do another day. I like that they went for the cruise jobs in this film, those scumbag companies deserve the bad press. People shouldn’t be ashamed of those jobs (as I have been ashamed before) but they are so disrespectful and exploitive to qualified actors and singers. Aside from that, I’m loving your reaction! 🙌🙌🙌 you rock.

I loved your story about your audition and the positive reaction to it! That feeling of knowing when you get that emotion just right, it never leaves you. I was in an acting class in college back in ‘86, and my teacher was running us through some scenarios. One had me literally prancing about the stage full of the worst hubris, only to be brought down by a confrontation with a Greek god (a rather ridiculous set up, but it worked in achieving the highest and then the lowest of emotions). I’m a bit reserved, naturally, so getting to that level of highest of highs was reaaaaalllly hard for me. The teacher is on the sidelines, urging me to get more lost in my hubris until I am spinning around in joy, and then he brings in the classmate who’s the god, and I see him in mid-spin, and then just collapse in a heap of jellied bones and grovel at his feet. That feeling of collapse-well, I’d never felt it before, nor never have again in all the years since. What I didn’t know was that my spinning about had brought a passing group of graduate-level acting students to a stop in the hall outside of our classroom to watch me, and when they saw my collapse, that got a big round of applause from them!! As someone who was not a theater student but just taking the class for fun (it was specifically for non-theater majors) because I really love acting, that applause and my teacher’s approval was such a rush that I’ve never forgotten in the decades since.

If you're going to watch Rent, here's what you need to know: The hollywood version is the better quality and has most of hte original cast. But it is HEAVILY modified from the original. Many of the sung lyrics have become spoken dialogue, which can be weird at times. Some whole songs were cut. The timeline of events is changed (instead of the whole first act happening in one night, it now happens over a week or so). It is... different. On the other hand, the Fox live rent special is far more faithful to the original (minus some censored for family broadcast changes) and the staging is really creative and interesting. But the production itself is a far lower quality than the other two versions. The cast just isn't as good and it's clear that rehearsals were minimal. But the camera and sets and overall production value is very high. The final option is the recording that was done of the final broadway performance in NYC. This is obviously going to be the most representative of the stage show... because it is the stage show. But it's a recording of a live performance with all the drawbacks that come with that. But if you want to see what it was like to see Rent in it's pure original format, this is the one you want to go with. Minimal set and all. Personally, knowing what you've shared in this and other videos, I would recommend the last option for your first viewing, especially if you're familiar with the soundtrack.

@@callmeclarissI resonate with both of your stories here. I live in Colorado, and at the time my parents lived in South Carolina. In 2019, my dad was taken to the ER before the first of two weekends of my winter concerts with my chorus. I was able to talk to him and his ICU nurse that Saturday between shows, he was getting discharged in the next day or two. The following Wednesday I came down with a 24 hour bug, so I stayed home on Thursday. I got calls and texts from my coworker to call my brother, who had called my office because I wasn’t picking up my phone. The next call I get from my brother, I picked up, and he tells me my dad died. 10 days prior, he underwent surgery to repair a complete aortic dissection, and on his way out of the follow up, the repair failed. I was numb, I reached out to my chorus family to let them know. That Friday night, I had my first of two performances of a duet in Tagalog about being separated from your loved ones at Christmas. He’d been gone for 36 hours, and I had to sing a song about loss and grief. I looked at my director before the concert started, and he reassured me I could do it because I’m a strong performer, but an even stronger soul. My partner and I ended up giving the best, most beautiful performance of all 8 shows according to most of my chorus family. I’m so sorry you both had to experience this as well, but in each of our cases, we made them proud.

I understand the passion for storytelling- its something I've loved my whole life, but I didn't understand about myself until more recently. I got into theater and acting later- I'm about to turn 32, and I acted in my first show as the age of 25- and I've discovered that what I love most about theater is the way you have all these people with all these different skill sets come together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. Acting not something I'm going to make my living doing, though I GENUINELY love being part of an ensemble, BUT COSTUMING. Costuming is my true love. I love the way you can tell a whole story about a character the second they walk on stage just by what they're wearing, that done the right way you can tell someone everything you need to know about them. Color theory, materials, time period, working with the actors and choreographers to create flow and movement and personality... I love it. I'm going to be the head costumer the first time this summer (would have been sooner, but you know, COVID), The Importance of Being Earnest, and I'm just vibrating with excitement already.

Everything you said that’s relatable to how hard it is to make it in the industry is exactly what I’m going through right now. I’m a 21 year old actor, musician and writer who has cerebral palsy every obstacle that comes with being in in the industry, is amplified for me. I’m unable to work a 9-5 job because of my condition because here in the uk the government pays me to stay at home so I can pay rent but not being able to contribute to society in a meaningful way is crushing to me. And my local government isn’t giving me the support I need to move to London for drama school. But I have had 2 “sondhiems” so far in my life the second of my “sondhiem’s” happened last week it was at an convention she was a voice actress in my favourite game of all time, I told her my story and at the end of our interaction she told me “I didn’t get into drama school until I was 26” and said “you have plenty of time if you want to keep acting do it, I see your passion and one day someone else will as well” that has given me the motivation to keep doing local theatre here in Oxford just for the love of my craft I have faith in god and myself that one day weather I make it or not I will be living a life that makes me feel whole you’ve gained a new subscriber clariss para sempre I believe in you your passion and your art and your story I will appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this and hope you’re living well ❤️

That moment when you realize all the ticking was never about him making the deadline for his musical, it was about how his life expectancy was coming due sooner than expected. Or, alternatively: how we got to see all his blood, sweat and effort, only to have the timer suddenly go off right when we stopped listening for it.

I believe I’m talented enough to absolutely WRECK SHOP in a starring role in a musical, but I also know that I’ll likely never get the chance. It just meant I had to shift my thinking to support myself. It’s why I found speech pathology and vocal health to be a path I want to follow. I can use my performance talent and the education on the health/medical side of things to support my fellow performers.

I would very much appreciate an analysis video on the In The Heights film. While I think that it's a well-made musical film on it's own, I agree that some of the story changes (particularly the ones on Benny and the Rosario's subplot) were questionable and took more away from the depth of the musical than added to it. I haven't really seen anyone else talk in-depth about those specific changes yet here on youtube, and since you're a latina actress & fan of the og musical, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

On being a storyteller: I was an actor (musical theater, even!). I'd like to believe I am "so, so talented," but I admit I lacked the drive, and I was never handed a fortuitous opportunity. And eventually I wanted more: more comfort, more success, more validation. I cherish the barest sliver of my toe that existed in the world of professional theater (no, you've never seen anything I've been in, and in the extremely off-chance you have, no you don't remember me). Now I'm a children's librarian, so I'm still involved in storytelling. And now that I'm older (and a bit more economically comfortable), I'm exploring writing professionally. It's all storytelling. I guess my point is, with this channel, you ARE a storyteller, and you're telling the story you connect to the most: yours. Brava.

Hi, I know this video is a couple months old at this point, but I just found it. I originally had found you through your Encanto reaction, but this....THIS is what made me subscribe. I'd like to reiterate that if you'd watch Rent to please watch the official recording of the stage performance rather than the movie that was made. It was lovely that they had used a lot of the original cast, but there were a bunch of very very bad decisions in the direction and cut of the film that takes away from the story in a very serious way in some of the most terrible decisions ever made. The worst in my opinion being the cutting of everything but the very beginning of the song "Goodbye, Love" and that song is SO IMPORTANT to the emotional core of the story. And when I found out the reason they cut it I got even more angry about it - they filmed it and thought it was so powerful that it outshined the climax. THAT was the reason. Literally too good for the film. I'm so bitter about it. But in general, everything decision in this film that was made that was so successful in transitioning to film? Basically the exact opposite decisions were made with Rent, it's honestly upsetting. So yeah, please please PLEASE watch the filmed stage show. I would love to see you react to that. Speaking of songs that were cut for more reasonable reasons - there was a song filmed for THIS movie called "Green Green Dress" that Netflix has released the deleted scene of on KZread, you should check it out. I both totally understand and agree with the reasons it was taken out (because most of the songs are either diegetic or very clearly a kind of Fantasy experience (like with No More), and Green Green Dress is very much a "musical" performance in a way that could take people out of the flow. The other reason being that it was the only "unnecessary" song in that it doesn't forward the plot in any way or change anything you know about the characters. Also, the retrospect of how impactful it is that Come to You Senses is the first time you hear Susan sing. So it makes sense but it is still a very good song and you should check it out.
