ACTRESS REACTS TO TURNING RED (2022) first time watch *SOO MUCH secondhand embarrassment & 4TOWN!!!*

Ойын-сауық

So keeping it lighthearted this week I decided to check out TURNING RED! And boy!!! The level of secondhand embarrassment I felt for Mei cannot be expressed accurately. As someone who experienced female puberty oh my gosh could I relate to so much! From the strict parents angle to enjoying pop boy groups this was a really fun time and I hope that you all enjoy it as well!

I hate how some people say they can't relate to his story having to deal with female puberty. I am a male in his thirties and I grew up around a lot of females so I can respect what females go through in their adolescence. Also, I think a lot of us can remember awkward times growing up regardless of your gender. I thought this movie was a fun and entertaining way to address real issues people face.

That scene where she tells her mom she doesn't want her to come mathletes really spoke to me. I think many of us with close relationships with our parents have that moment when we reach teenage years where we want to do things with our friends. And have to tell the parents things like "oh no when i said i wanted to go see that movie i meant just with my friends not with you 😕" and things like that

I believe Turning Red is the first Disney/Pixar that focuses on adolescence, puberty, and even periods. Periods are still stigmatized today, and it's sad. I liked Turning Red because I have never seen ANY kids' content where they normalize menstruation, let alone talk about it. The first kids' film to feature sanitary products! I was so glad to see Pixar pop that stigma bubble! I like the scene where Mei's mom thought Mei was getting her period; how she told Mei that it was expected, was nothing to be embarrassed about, and tried to give her everything she needed to get through it. It's still something that no one talks about, but we should because it's part of our everyday lives and crucial to the health of people who experience them. Luckily when I was a kid, I had a book about it, and my parents (them being trained as physicians) told me about all the changes my body would go through, so when the time came, I wasn't afraid, and I never felt uncomfortable asking questions. But there are some kids out there who never learn about it. I think Turning Red will become a good conversation starter for kids. :)

I love this film! Been watching it with my 10 yo daughter and its been a great conversation starter for things like periods and puberty and sexuality. Also, I went through my teens in the 90s, and there are still so many relatable parts of this film. When I was around 9 me and a group of friends made this elaborate plan to get one of our friends the new budgie her parents didn't let her get. We scrambled together money and took the bus to the mall all on our own, then was thwarted by the pet shop employee who insisted on calling her parents. We were in so much trouble.

I think this movie has a much, much better apology scene than Encanto. IRL, apologies aren't as clean and well balanced as Turning Red - they're often more like Encanto, but exclusively from a storytelling standpoint, I think the Turning Red apology works better. Its because they're in directly comparable situations, giving Mei a chance to see her own insecurities from an outsider's perspective and realize that she would forgive someone else for making those mistakes... so why shouldn't she forgive herself, too? In Encanto, Mirabel's trauma and Abuela's trauma are entirely different, so it feels a little less like an apology. It feels more like a "I have an *excuse* for traumatizing you" than a "I have an *explanation,* and you deserve to know it so that you know this isn't your fault." Although I think in Encanto, I just would have added a few more lines of dialogue and I think that would have worked as an apology scene for two very different perspectives.

I totally agree with your comparison of Encanto and Turning Red, and I'm more satisfied with Turning Red for that reason. And poor Bruno never got an apology for having to spend half is life in exile from the family. The same complaint applies: He's supposed to understand that la abuela had a rationale for her feelings, so he gets no apology.

I feel like when Ming says "It's too soon," she's more saying that she *thinks* it's too soon because she still sees Mei as "just a child" as she says to Mei when she's explaining the whole red panda thing in the temple. It's little things like those phrases that help tell the story because Mei is at the age where a young person starts to be more open about their individuality as a person rather than just the role they play in their family.

New fan, just watched you on Timothee's channel and love your energy when reacting. Also not making fun but your face at the food scene was too funny. It literally reminds me of myself the first time I watched it. XD As far as a story to share about strict parents well... Mine were strict in some aspects but not any more than any other parents, but I did have one incident where I was like. "Really you don't believe me? When Have I ever lied to you." Grated I didn't say that but that's how I felt lol. Anyway onto the actual story, I'd gone trick or treating with a decent sized group of friends (about 6-8 if I remember) and after we were done, we walked back to my friends house so we could wait for our parents to come and get us. My friends mom smokes, so when I got home I had a lingering smell on me of cigarettes. My dad freaked out and even threatened to go get a drug test from the pharmacy... Then once I got to explain, they realized it was because my friends mom SMOKES IN THE HOUSE. XD The whole house smells like it, so of course it would stick to my clothes when she was smoking as we entered the house. It took some convincing but once they notice my breathe didn't smell of it, they believed me. After that, they learned to trust me a bit more, but looking back it's a hilarious story.

I think what you're trying to say is that people do emotional coming of age stories, and they do very accurate boys' coming of age stories, but the realities of girls' coming of age are avoided. The emotional swings, the rebellion, the growing sexuality, the grit of menstruation, the difficulty separating from parents while still loving parents. The entire messy thing that hits you increasingly from about 10 to about 18...and perhaps worst of all right at this breakpoint, of about 13/middle school. And the quiet subtext that "society/family" want you to become your "real self" by banishing it all, so adults don't have to look at it. I love Mei shouting at her mom "I like loud music, I like boys, I like GYRATING! I'm 13. DEAL WITH IT!" Perfect. Her "real self" is a 13-year-old girl, complete with emotional swings, fanfic boy art, increasing rebellion and attempts to integrate into a social cohort, periods, independence, conflict with authority. She's 13. That's her real self. Deal with it.

I kind of felt this movie was more just a general coming of age/puberty story rather than something specifically about periods. Like sure periods would be part of it for women, but there seem to be just as many mentions of fur and smelling bad and being attracted to the opposite sex etc which are things men and women would experience. I also kind of think if this was meant to be about periods, would calling it turning red and being about red pandas be a bit on the nose? Like if there was a movie about boys getting mystery erections and calling it turning hard and making him turn into a stone snake when his emotions arent under control. That sort of symbolism seems too obvious. which is probably why so many stupid people seemed to oppose turning red, cause they only saw the surface level stuff, red panda=periods

@Clariss Degrassi had an episode where a character got her period for the first time when she was about thirteen and it was honestly so well done, I highly suggest a reaction or at least watching it.

I love this movie. I've watched it numerous times. I laughed so hard I choked....almost had to call 911. And the second-hand embarrassment was real. Although this movie was aimed directly at Millennials who were young teens in 2002, I'm a 70-year-old black man and I love this movie. People who say this movie is unrelatable are just being jackasses. Ming told Mei explicitly that the Panda is a product of mystically harnessing their emotional energy, so for their family, it's _one of_ the changes that occurs at puberty, but it's not directly analogous to menstruation. There's no indication that Mei has started her period yet. But there is a lot it says about broaching such subjects early. When Jin asks Mei, "What has your mother told you about her panda?" and Mei responds, "She won't talk about it," that ought to have been convicting for any parents who haven't yet had their own discussions with their children. The all-out fight between Mei and Ming was a replay of the all-out fight Ming had with Grandmother Wu. The danger was that the relationship between Mei and Ming would be destroyed as had been the relationship between Ming and Wu. The stakes were enormous, and both were too angry to realize it. The difference was that Mei had friends that had given her a foundation of unconditional approval. She didn't feel as isolated at Ming had felt. Subtly noted, Priya had already started her period. Her figure was developing, she had deodorant handy, and she also had _extra_ pads to offer Mei. The point was that even if some middle school girls hadn't started yet, some of their classmates certainly have. These days, that even extends into elementary school. So there really is no "too early" time to start teaching daughters about it.

I can't find the Cantonese lyrics, but I think, when pronounced right, it's supposed to mean: “Cleanse your heart and body / Hold on to your heart / (Let your) spirit return / Swiftly to where it belongs.”

27:03 The Cantonese Chant: PURIFY THE MIND AND BODY. SUPPRESS THE ANIMAL SIDE. RESTORE VITALITY. WAKE UP AND RETURN TO YOUR ORIGINAL BODY. The Chinese shrine characters say: All the tributaries of a river share the same origin. All the tree's branches share the same roots.

What's the difference between a "Regular" pad and an "Unscented" pad? And what exactly does the "Overnight" pad do?

  • @callmeclariss

    @callmeclariss

Unscented I believe is usually made for people with allergies to something in pads, regular idk I guess is regular, and overnight I would assume is a thicker pad for overnight absorption. Granted I am not an expert but I have experience so take this info as you will 🤷🏻‍♀️ Hope this helped! live long and prosper! 🖖🖖🖖

Scented pads are literally scented. This is because periods to have a scent and though no one else will notice, the person with the period notices, so scented pads can help make women feel less self conscious about it. Unscented is unscented which can be for preference or allergy reasons. Aside from that, there’s different materials that pads can be made from. Some women may have an allergy to the materials pads are made from. Pads are usually made from synthetic materials, but I n recent years, brands have come out with organic cotton pads, which has been helpful. As for overnight vs regular, pads come in 4 different lengths (short, medium, long, overnight) and thicknesses. Generally overnight refers to an extra long pad, which is definitely necessary if the female has a heavier flow. Other options are tampons, period cups like the Diva Cup and I think there’s a couple others. Some women wear both for extra security if they flow heavy. At the end of the day, it comes down to how heavy the flow is and preference. Hope this helps 🙂

This movie was so facinating to me. I was adopted from southern china by a white couple which has left me culturally stuck in the middle. I can’t actually speak Chinese and I don’t know what it is like to live in china. I’m trans assigned female at birth so I understand the confusion of getting a period I also don’t understand coming of age as a woman because I’m not one. I liked the movie.
