I sent a screen cap of the "Too Many Turbans and Hijabs" to someone yesterday. Couldn't even begin to respond to how ridiculous it was. It's absolutely fine to dislike this movie, it's fine to write a negative. The number of reviews that boiled down disliking an accurate depiction of Toronto of disliking a female protagonist makes me doubt every negative review.

This year has increasingly been significantly more toxic with people justifying blatant homophobia, sexism, racism etc by saying it's "woke". People looked at a black lead actors like Nope and bashed it as "woke" automatically based off that alone. It's sad how we're taking a dip in society with these incel elitist degenerates and make what they say seem just and reasonable. It's the world we live in 🤷

Most people who are hating on this film just don’t get it. They’re mad at the “suggestive” themes and calling it a “kids movie”. Just because it’s Disney, does not mean it’s aimed at only kids. This film’s target audience is clearly for the girls who went through a typical, awkward teenhood. I also appreciate how realistic it is and they used the red panda as a metaphor for puberty.

It is a kids movie, but maybe not in a classical sense where it is a fantastical adventure devoid of bodily functions. The shines light on a lot of things that kids (especially young girls) will go through from age 10 and up and it's an amazing conversation starter. I do not get the people who don't want girls to know about periods and sexuality before it happens, because it will be the norm for the rest of their lives. Not to mention the horror when you first get your period, bleeding without knowing why is terrifying.

Me as well! I feel in many coming of age stories the character is either alienated from their family, or they suffer. So I am glad they can show a realistic, and healthy relationship. Growing up and growing apart from your parents doesn’t have to mean it’s the end or you hate eachother! And I’m glad they show that rift in the different generations, like how mei is closer to her mom than her mom and grandmother are. Also I’m so glad they allow her to appreciate her heritage; many shows have characters “revel” and completely abandon or hate where they come from- which can work- but many people grow up to still love their culture, religion or practices.

I agree, and maybe it's a comment on that generation that was on the cusp of greater freedom, slightly more Liberal ourlooks but were still beholden to the stricter aspects of their culture. Whereas Mei kind of gets the benefit of not struggling the way her mother did, because a new way is possible, you can modernise and take what you like about your culture as you move through life without losing your individuality.

  • @robindude8187

@@missjoannaofyeetyoink My thought on her size is that it's just variation. Look at the others. The panda is a double-metaphor, both for puberty in general (changing) and being a _red_ panda as a metaphor for _periods._ Women have different periods. Some are more intense than others, some less. Some get them _so_ bad that without medication to treat it, they'd be _hospitalized._ Ming's panda wasn't big because she _suppressed_ her emotions, it was big _genetically,_ something that (thankfully) _didn't_ hit her daughter the same way. Where the grandmother or aunties could _potentially_ have kept their pandas, Ming... couldn't. From a sort of 'real-world' perspective, either her period is out of control and dangerous to her, _or_ her hormones are out of control giving her an emotion regulation issue (likely anger). These things _do_ happen in ways that has _nothing_ to do with being 'repressed'. Sometimes body or brain chemistry is just... messed. From the 'movie-world' perspective, Ming _really_ couldn't keep her panda! If she ever changed _inside_ a _building,_ well everyone in the _room_ with her is dead, and if the transformation is _strong_ enough she might destroy _the whole building,_ killing _everyone else_ as well, and all with a side-effect of possibly killing Ming in a couple ways (crushed in a room that is too small for her, or having hundreds of tons of building collapse on her).

Im so glad you brought up that stupid point critics were trying to say that it was "only for a certain demographic" and "isnt meant for general audiences" because they NEVER say that shit about stories that are about boys going through puberty or boys having "coming of age" stories in movies, they NEVER say that about them because they consider those to be universal. But the moment women get a coming of age story that talks about puberty in a movie, suddenly it "isnt universal enough". Us girls and women have been able to enjoy coming of age stories about boys/men without being able to relate to them as the same sex/gender for YEARS, these people need to shut their mouths.

This reaction had me dying lmao 💀💀💀 Also just to pop in that 4 is unlucky in many East Asian countries because its pronunciation is very close to "death" - so in Cantonese both "four" and "death" is "sei" but with different tones. Part of the reason as to why homes and apartments around East Asia sometimes skip numbers with 4 in them - elevators and buildings will even sometimes skip Floor 4 and it'll go from Floor 3 to Floor 5.

i only just realiseed this, but i think i know why Mei's mum is so much bigger than the others. The grandma said earlier that the more you use your panda, the stronger it will get. Near the end of the film, we see a younger version of Ming in what i like to call the 'Ritual Relm'. She's clearly very self-conscious and insecure about how she never felt good enough for her mother. Maybe she used her panda a lot to try and feel more comfortable as herself. And the more she used it, the stronger and more powerful her panda became.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason. But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time. (Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.) People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them. If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.

I love this film. They should make a sequel. I think when Mei says that I'm scared it'll take me away from you, maybe another ancestor is the enemy of sun yee. He'd betray sun yee and captures red pandas and kills them offscreen. Say like sun yee defeated him but his soul is in the treasure chest and I think Mei would have found it in the temple and accidentally opened it and he's free. So I think Mei would have been his target and captured her. Ming, her grandmother, her aunties, and Mei's friends would have sacrificed their lives to save Mei. Then when her friends and family get injured or knocked out, its mei's turn for hers to turn big and invincible to defeat him and save the day.

A movie about friendship, pressure (by others and yourself), breaking generational trauma, and learning to love the things you can't control about yourself. THAT'S MY MOVIE, IT MAKES ME CRY AND IT MAKES MY HEART WARM AT THE SAME TIME

I enjoyed every moment of your reaction to this film. Your comments were hilarious in addition to being insightful and understanding both Mei and her mum's side. On a side note, I can't believe how many adults didn't get this film. It's *supposed* to have cringy moments - I mean it's about a 13 year old. We've all done silly things as kids and had crushes - it's absurd how people like to pretend like going through puberty is delightfully perfect. 🤦‍♀️

*THOSE* people who didnt like this miss are NOT allowed anywhere near good film. Like, this movie had EVERYTHING. AND it had a good message and healthy friendships?? Def up there with Encanto and The Princess and The Frog as my favourite Disney movies. As always, i loved your reaction!!!

The people who bash it, I am convinced, lack any critical thinking whatsoever. People are so narrow-minded, I swear. On another note, I am very happy with how they portrayed friendship in the movie! The group feels very realistic, I know my friend group used to be like that when we were young!

I thought it was pretty great. Not as amazing as Encanto but I think that’s due to the Lin Manuel Miranda music lol. The animation was cute. The Asian influences were spot on - from the parental pressure to the food to the number 4 (which means death and is therefore bad luck in Chinese culture). It’s a gorgeous film.

A lot of the people who don't like this movie seem to not be able to relate to Mei Mei because she's a non-white girl lead character. Talk about a bunch of whiny babies. I really like this movie and your reaction was great!

  • @ShaleNinja
    @ShaleNinja2 жыл бұрын

Your response to this film is one of the most wholesome I've seen yet. You get it, you understood what the film was saying, and guess what - you didn't have to be a teenage girl to get it! Human empathy is more than enough...we were all teenagers once. When you rule out the conservative haters of this film, there's a distinct pattern. 1) It's not "relatable" because the protagonist is a teenage girl, and 2) it's not "relatable" because the protagonist is Chinese. Somehow both of these things make the film too niche, as if the rest of us are meant to only relate to white dude protagonists. This film is beautiful, and it's a fantastic exploration of generational trauma, teenhood and coming of age, the deep friendships you make as a young person, and of course a solid commentary on existing as a minority in the Western world. Not gonna lie, I get watery-eyed every time I watch those final few scenes.

This movie described my life experience completely almost everything that happened to mei happened to me. Actually what is really funny is that the whole scene where mei was trying to convince her mom to let her got to her first concert was exactly how it went for me except I got permission to go and it was to see bts lol.

I stumbled across your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching your stuff. Love your humor and commentary! Turning Red is a coming of age story about puberty, changes, family, friendship that everyone can relate to. Family is such a strong theme in Asian culture and it can be hard for new gen Asian kids to discover themseleves due to pressure. I think some ppl disliked it because of the "cringe" puberty stuff incuding periods cause some people think kids shouldnt see that. But in reality its normalizing talking about changes and its okay.
