Man I’m so pissed... been trying to accomplish my goals and just when my running mileage was getting better... boom my leg seems to have a stress fracture. I have an MRI coming up but fuck... every time I try to get serious about my physique there is always something... from ACL, medial meniscal tear and now this. NOT FAIR!

Very informative, yet a bit frighten here. 45yrs old here, 40miles/weekly. The nutritional part did catch my attention, as I do run a 7:30min/mile average and have been intermittent fasting for the past 4yrs and do run on a fasted state (do have post recovery Ka'chava shake and nutritious dinner; all done between 6pm-10pm, my eating window). Slight tenderness on what I presume is or was shin splints. Thank you for the insight, which has lead me to scheduling an appointment with my doctor for an MRI or a specialist. Will keep you posted and do look forward to future content from your channel.

Harry, you and I share the same story, same age. I run 15 miles a week though, not 40 but IF and One Meal a Day. I recently pulled my calf playing soccer and X-ray revealed a stress fracture line on my tibia. I had zero pain on my tibia and was surprised to see the fracture, even did a second opinion and it is still there. Headed for MRI next week and started taking Vitamin D. Let me know how it went for you, thank you!

Thank you for a very informative and helpful video. I have been diagnosed with a tibial stress fracture on my left leg yesterday, it was confirmed by a MRI scan :-( There have been some signs in the past couple of months pointing something is not right, but sadly I disregarded them and ended up with a stress fracture. Probably the first subtle signs appeared already in January or February when I felt shin pain while foam rolling and the pain was much greater on my left foot. Then by the end of March, I felt some dull pain in my left shin right at the start of my runs, but it always seemed to go away during the run and so I ignored it. About one month ago I was on a group training where we hopped on one foot and this was the time I realized something is bad because hopping on the foot really hurt. I went to a PT who noticed there was a slight bump and the place hurt when I pressured against the middle part of my tibia bone. While I reduced the amount of running, I still did a couple of fast runs and even one 10k race that probably made my initial condition much worse. Now I must stay away from running for at least one month and I must take supplementary calcium. Luckily I am allowed to bicycle and swim. Hoping my bone will heal before the end of summer! Still not completely sure what caused my injury, but most probably it was a combination of running too long in old worn-out shoes, poor nutrition, not enough sleep and stress at work. Also I took part in a challenge back in December - running every day for four weeks - and it was probably too much for me or I did not allow enough time for recovery after it. I also read that drinking too much coffee limits calcium supply to the bones - So I am quitting all coffee for the next month!

Thank you for a very informative video! I am a basketball player. I have been diagnosed with a medial malleolus fracture with a fracture line in early February. I was hurting for 3 weeks while still playing basketball before they identified the fracture). I was in a boot for 3 weeks, walked freely for 1 week, and then I think I progressed too quickly( did 5min jogging and it hurt, then did rowing and squats with 10kg on the next day). Because of my pain I took 2 weeks of a break trying to be on my feet at all (only necessary walking and biking to get around without using my leg that hurts). It still hurts whenever I walk around more. What is your recommendation as of what should be done now? Will I be ready to play again by mid-August?

Do you have any advice on what I should do to recover faster cos I need to start playing in a month time

Had tibial sf as a result of combo of too clean diet (brought on vitamin deficiency despite supplements) and overtraining (50k a wk). Telltale sign is soleus pain. If you get to point where you are limping you should not run through pain. A SF will ache and throb at rest, especially at night. Pain will be localized to point of fracture on the tibia (it will feel very bruised in a particular spot on the bone). I took 12 weeks off but still had phantom pain for a year after. Don’t run through this injury or you will prolong pain and recovery. Definitely take D3 with K2 to help with bone rebuilding.

I have had shin pain for around 11 years, it happened when I used to run and got really bad so I had to stop ( I ran through a lot of time which is silly )... I have basically done no running for around 11 years now and been mostly inactive working at a desk, when I press my shin it hurts slightly on all parts of the bone but occasionally a small localized bit will be a bit more of a sharp pain. I went to a physio and they said it's most likely caused by weak glutes, hips, shin and calves... I'm worried incase I have stress fractures but the physio said that if it was I would have probably healed by now... my question is can shin splints also have a bit of localized pain too?

  • @SportsInjuryPhysio

Hi Benny, It’s highly unlikely that this is a stress fracture since you’ve not done any high load activities for so long. Yes it is normal to get painful spots and most people will find them if they poke hard enough. The pain from a stress fracture is quite intense and it usually does not take much pressure to elicit it.

Hi! Any big difference in symptoms/recovary/treatment between tibial and fibula stress fracture? I might have early stage fibula stress fracture, but ultrasound didn't show anything. It hurts on the outside of the fibula, a 15cm or so above the start of the fibula/ankle under high impact on front foot (jumping/running). A lot on youtube and generally on the internet about tibail stress fracture, but not a whole lot on the fibula.

  • @SportsInjuryPhysio

Fibula is less dangerous as not the main weightbearing bone but can still turn into full fracture if neglected. The healing times really depends on how well you look after it and the extent of your injury - difficult to predict.

You have to build the load tolerance very slowly once you come out of the boot. First be able to walk long distances without pain. Then start with run-walk intervals and slowly increase them and make sure you have enough recovery days after. Also do strength training for calves and legs. If you wanted help with your rehab , this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. If the pain goes away after 5 minutes of running it is unlikely to a stress fracture - it sounds more like a tendon injury or something else. Get it assessed properly so you don't waste time with the wrong treatment.

im not quite sure about one thing... If someone does have low risk medial tibia stress fracture, is he supposed to exercise or not? Because you say that the leg needs an off-loading, but at the same time people say that in order to help the bone you need to be streching and get stronger lower leg muscles by exercising with heavy weights

  • @SportsInjuryPhysio

    @SportsInjuryPhysio

    27 күн бұрын

You need to exercise at a level that does not cause pain during or in 24 hours after. So you only use movements and weights that it can currently tolerate. That is what load management means. But at the start you may have to completely rest it if it hurts just walking etc. and only start training when it is ready. So it is all about tailoring your treatment for the stage of healing it is in.

When I started playing again after rest, there were no pain for the first 3 days but later again that area get affected by pain and increases day by day. Now, the pain is in line greater than 5cm? Is it shin splints or medial stress fracture? or is it due to incomplete healing?? mam what can I do??

It sounds as if you went back to playing too abruptly. Once the pain goes away you have to slowly reload the bones and lower legs by increasing walking and doing strength training and then introducing jogging and jumping and lastly fully force activities. But it is also important to allow recovery days between activities which I'm not sure from your message that you did. At this moment the first step is to get someone do check it for you to ensure the diagnosis is correct and then you will know what treatment regime to follow.

Stress fractures are always painful when you do activities e.g. jump or run - if you have absolutely no pain then it is unlikely that it is a stress fracture. Best to get it checked by your doctor and get a proper diagnosis.

My x-ray shows a fracture line on my tibia but I feel no pain at all. I went to the doc because I pulled my calf muscle and during that investigation, he found that I have a stress fracture. I'm lined up for a MRI next but how is it possible that I have a fracture but not feel any pain? He even squeezed that area. There's a tiny bump, which is slightly painful, 2 out of 10 if squeezed.

Pain is strange. We used to think that it is linked directly to how much damage you have but it has become clear over the last 10 years of research that actually it can't be trusted. Pain is only the alarm system and sometimes it doesn't sound the alarm and other times it totally over shouts and causes lots of pain when there is not reason. There is a chance that your x-ray showed something that wasn't there but it is good that you're doing an MRI as that will provide you with a definitive answer. In the meantime - act as if it is a stress fracture.

Yes, you can. It just sounds as if you were trying to load it a bit too quickly. So take the time to rest and recover properly and then build your endurance first through walking and jogging before going back to sport. When you finally go back to sport you just have to start very slowly and build the amount you do up over several weeks.

But you have to take care of your self bro, dont make it worse..I will give my tips to be able to recover from stress fractures based on my experience. I suffered from a stress fracture about 1 year ago.. it turns out that the main cause is because my calves and ankles are not strong enough to support my weight when running, so I have to rest my feet for 3 full months, every day I compress my feet with ice 2 times a day. 20 minutes per leg. after 3 months i started retraining my legs from the base, my calves and ankles.. i practiced hurdle jumps, box jumps, tuck jumps, jump squats, calf raises and going up and down stairs about 5 times a week..i do it more or less 1 month..after that I started to increase my training by endurance running from 15 minutes non-stop to 1 hour non-stop, I did it for about 2 months and even I didn't feel any more stress fractures in my legs..after that I started go into my main workout which is 5 km running, while I also do calf and ankle exercises and endurance running on different days..and NOW I am free from stress fractures, I never feel that way now..maybe this experience of mine can help someone others who have the same problem as me..as I said before, you have a stress fracture maybe because your calf and ankle are not strong enough to support the weight.. so focus on strengthening it..
