HIgh speed bullet trains are extremely important, most people underestimate their value and think they dont really pay off or planes are faster. They are 10 times more comfortable than a plane, and in most planes you still have to take the TRAIN first to the airport, wait around 2hrs in the airport before you can land and then still you have to take the TRAIN again towards your final destination. Suddenly large areas that were deemed too far away are acutally quite close with a high speed train. And for tourists its very easy to use which boosts tourism in places in which they wouldnt have gone before. China is doing the right thing with high speed rail.

Correct. For very long distances trains are the best... But for medium and short ranges - trains are better. One way a train ride is better for long distance is if you have to make last minute reservations. It's cheaper than a plane.

Trains are faster than planes up to about 1000 km distance (taking into account the necessity to drive to the airport, check in procedures, waiting and at arrival the need to drive from the airport into the city center, while the train normal stops in or very near the city center etc). From 1000 km on the plane will be faster, but there is something to be taken into account that is the environmental cost (energy cost and carbon emission) of taking the plane that is more than 20 times per seat compared to taking the high speed train, which is very important too. Therefore the train is preferred even for longer distances.

@@Amidat I will argue that even if you are 1-2 hours faster with the plane, people would still choose the high speed rail because: seating space is much wider, even if you are a tall guy it will be a much more comfortable ride. For tourists it is especially great as they can make stops inbetween the cities. You can just hop out a station if you want to look at something different. You can be much more spontanous and get a ride like 20 minutes before the train departs with a reserved seat for you only. This is not possible with a plane. A plane is much less comfortable and more rigid when it comes to timeschedules. I was in japan using the shinkansen from Tokyo to Fukuoka and i have to say since then im a big fan of high speed rail.

I saw a video about how rural villagers can take HSR for 1 Yuan (15 cents?) to sell their produce in the population centers. Small scale commercial farming can exist in China, unlike the US, because the government is subsidizing HSR. I also imagine that HSR helps control the property bubble because workers don't all have jam themselves in the cities.
