@Ratko Mladic I'm guessing it's a reference to a "Whose Line" outtake where the audience suggests Bill Cosby and Hitler as unlikely roommates (obviously this was before the scandal); the producers veto it, so naturally, the rest of the episode is peppered with Hitler references that had to be cut.

Germanicus (13:46) was the brother of the later Emperor Claudius; who was often heard to say that he wished Germanicus was alive to rule instead of himself. It was said that Germanicus' death was a tragedy Claudius never got over, and it shaped his rule in a lot of ways.

Given that how Roman life treated people like Claudius and Tiberius went on his way to kick him while he was down and what he went trough with Caligula, I get where he was coming from. Augustus was pretty much only one who saw that Claudius had hidden depths. There's a letter where he says that when Claudius has time to prepare and construct his speech, he's actually pretty good orator and can argue his points well. It's just that when he was in private, Claudius was stammering and hard to figure out.

For those of you keeping score, Agrippa had six or seven daughters from three marriages. Agrippa's full name was Marcus Vispanius Agrippa and the Romans had some repetitive naming conventions. All Agrippa's faughters were named Vispania, although his daughters with Julia were called Vispania Julia and Vispania Agrippina-- Julia the Younger and Agrippina the Elder respectively. The Vispania who married Tiberius was from Agrippa's first marriage with Caecilla Attica.

Vipsania got her name from the family name of Marcus Agrippa, whose full name was Marcus _Vipsanius_ Agrippa. Any daughter of his would have been called that, as that was the Roman custom. According to Wikipedia, Vipsania's full name was Vipsania Agrippina Minor, and she was indeed the child of Agrippa's first marriage, to Pomponia Caecilia Attica. Britannica appears to confuse the various Vipsaniae Agrippinae; the Tiberius page has a link to Vipsania Agrippina, but this Vipsania was the wife of Germanicus Caesar.

It's good to see Tiberius getting some attention and good to see his reputation rehabilitated by contemporary historians like Barbara Levick and David Shotter. He's now considered a good emperor in his administration of the empire but nevertheless deeply troubled and with a dark side. Cassius Dio had him right; Suetonius, part of emperor Hadrian's entourage and later disgraced, is very untrustworthy and biased. This is the best thing on Tiberius I've seen on KZread.

Tiberius apparently was quite a wizard with finances too. He managed to accumulate 3.7 billion sestersii in imperial treasury(granted some of it was obtained via confiscating property in treason trials). He also took care of financial crisis of the time that involved Julius Caesar's wealth cap laws to restore credit of roman elite. Of course, Caligula managed to spend all the money in little over a year, but kudos to Tiberius of having statecraft. Augustus was right that he had administrative skills worth of an emperor, even if personality and political networking skills were subpar.

Tiberius I think was a capable emperor but not a capable public figure. He was a good administrator and a clever diplomatic and politician but he was not good at public speech and he had no real appititde for war. He was also just an unpleasant individual to be around; humorless, strict, demanding, rude and just unfriendly all around.

  • @John_Fugazzi

@@MrMarinus18 I really agree. He seemed to have no social skills or any sense of public relations, completely the opposite of Augustus. You really oughta check out The Twelve Caesars by Suetonius. He was the original gossip columnist and is the source of so much juicy stuff. A typical chapter might be, say 40 pages, of which the first 5 will be on their background, education, and how they came to power. Then it's "Right, now for the scandals", which he obviously relishes. The tale of the fisherman of Capri is pretty low key compared to some. Nero's relations with his mother spring to mind.

They had epilepsy in their family line and both epilepsy and bipolar are controlled by the same part of the brain. Meds like Lamictal that are anticonvulsants also work for bipolar. It’s not uncommon for both diseases to run in the same family and bipolar is notoriously a hereditary disorder.

12:00 you have to remember that Octavian Augustus had ruled for 40 years. When the average lifespan was about that long, he would have seemed as much of a fixture as Queen Elizabeth. How many people have been born and died during her reign? Even people who hated him would have been afraid of this new world.
