He would have taken all of Asia, but his greedy generals, wanted their're own kingdoms and no more wars, so they plotted to have him killed, Alexander biggest mistakes was trusting his own friends, and not supplying his army with fresh troops, especially new generals.

With Bucephalus, he didn’t manhandle the horse into submission like was described in this video. He recognized the horse was afraid of his shadow and made him face the sun and calmed him down for 10 or so minutes before jumping on.

Just because he didn't mention the horse was scared of his shadow doesn't mean that's not what he meant. His comment in the video basically said he conquered the horse, Which he did , Alexander figured him out, Then Bucephalus was now his.

Educated by Aristotle student of Socrates student of Plato, conquered the largest army in history (at that point), created one of the largest empire (at that point), inspired great leaders from Ceasar to Napoleon and never lost a battle all in the space of a decade... Some say that he should be called Alexander the conqueror instead of Great. Many men were conquerors. Caesar, Genghis Khan, Suleiman, Napoleon. Alexander was Great. He didn't name himself great like Napoleon or some little known Prussian and Russian rulers. History gave him that name. Plus the word great means much more in Greek. Μέγας Αλέξανδρος meaning that no one can be greater, no one can achieve more. A king who could lay low and leave the battle to his army while spitting orders. Instead he fought in the first line, in phalanx or on his horse, the Greek way.Did so much in 33 years, most "conquerors" would need 1000 lifetimes. Btw the Persians used Greek mercenaries all the time. The reason for that is that the Persian soldiers were ill trained and pretty ignorant of battle. Imagine being a persian soldier, having heard stories about your ancestors trying to invade Greece and being slaughtered. Then you see 40.000 Greeks with 6 meters spears marching in perfect phalanx ready to take revenge. Poor guys must had been shitting their pants.

Keep in mind that the Greco-Roman Wars took place 200 years after his death and of course the phalanx tactic was obsolete at that point. The Macedonians lost the war because the rest of the Greeks joined the Romans as well. The Greek world was in serious decline at that point.

The main lesson being that the only way to stop a guy like that is for everyone else to put their disputes aside and join forces against him. As was done to stop Napoleon and Hitler.

@@fredbarker9201 It's possible, anything would be possible with those two but it wouldn't be that simple. I think a lot would depend on the quality of the troops, at which point in their respective careers they would be, since both armies were essentially professional and not conscripts, the terrain and other less obvious factors as well.

He conquered the world before the age of 30. And how's your day been? ;)

The Battle of Hidaspus, in which Alexander faught against King Puru(Porus) is a significant milestone in Indian History. When Puru was defeated and imprisoned after fighting valiantly, Alexander asked him how should he, the new slave be treated by the great emperor. Puru replied, like how one king should treat another king. This fearless reply impressed Alexander so much that he fred Puru and gave back his land.

8:43 - Glossed over how to put down the rebellion. Alexander was able to do so, cause of how quickly his army travelled and it took everyone off guard. His army travelled about 500 miles in 13 days. That's crazy during that time period.

That battle with various historical leaders was great and all, but I feel like Alexander the Great vs Genghis Khan would have been more fitting given their respective reputations as conquerors, rather than having Khan battle the Easter Bunny in Season 1

I love all the stories abt Alexander the great. I am from Central Asia, and he went to India through my country, Tajikistan. Many coins with his face were found on Tajik land, and from all central Asian count, only Tajiks look like Greeks. 😉. This is so interesting! The new state of North Macedonia is stealing Ancient Greek and Bulgarian medieval History as well as Bulgarian new history. North Macedonian "historians" are changing identity of already dead people from region of Macedonia as Goce Delcev, Dame Gruev, Christo Tatarchev who has declared themselves as Bulgarians from region of Macedonia. Postmortem now they try to change their identity and to make them North Macedonians. They tried to do same by stealing Alexander the Great.

Ive been watching Simon Whistler since his tea drinking video. I have watched this man evolve into a great and excellent producer of great content. Never disappointed and look forward to all your content. Thanks Simon for all your hard work and dedication to your brand.

Do a video on Grecobudism and all other wonderful influences of the Greek civilisation in the East that came as a result of Alexander's conquests.

Ancient Greece produced some of the finest Greek warriors and kings like leonidas, Alexander the Great, phyrrus, miltaedes etc. so very proud of my countries history.

Pella was not the capital of Greece, it was A capital of Greece. Greeks (or Hellenes, more appropriately) , had many city states and kingdoms.

@@izabelacupi6349 He was Greek. His father (Philippos) was Macedonian and his mother (Olympia) was from Epirus. Macedonians were Greek just like Athenians, Spartans, Epirotes, Cretans,Thraciancs etc.

I'm going to learn as much as I can about Aristotle and Socrates, specifically their teachings and how they taught Alexander the great. So I can teach my kids the same way.

there are no writings for socrates, all we know about him is from plato and other sophists and philosophers. we know he existed and that he was executed. for aristotle you can read politics, however he was a private teacher for him so most likely the things he said and taught him were in the span of the moment unless he wrote it down. but most likely he didn't because most of what we know about alexander himself is written after he died so it can be a bit askew. good luck.

That's something you ought to tell to his sister (who's a mermaid) if you ever encounter her in the sea. She'll ask :"Ζεί ο Βασιλιάς Αλέξανδρος;" "Is King Alexander alive?" If the sailors answer that he lives ("Ζει, ζει και βασιλεύει"), then she let them go. But if they say that he's dead then she shanks the ship and the sailors, and then the mermaid regrets it for the lives of the sailors she took away, cries and mourns, from the cries rises a storm and a great storm that destroys everything in its path. Or that's the story anyway.

Ptolemy was a general of Alexander, not a general in charge of Egypt. But the diadochi split the parts and Ptolemy went to Egypt.

Small correction. Pella, was the capitol of ancient Macedonia, "Greece" was a collection of city states each with its own government. Even after Philip subdued Greece, he was simply acknowledged as the Hegemon, not king, of Greece.

@@j.kapiris That isn't what Andrew said. He said that the city-states maintained a degree of autonomy with the king of Macedon as the head of the alliance holding them together. There was no mention of Alexander's heritage.

I don't even think there was such a concept as Greece back then. They were naming themselves as Athenians, Spartans etc. And the kingdom of Macedon was a different thing, which is shown by the ancient texts of how the city-states saw the Macedonian kingdom as a threat to them.

@@markokorunovski2198 There was Greece back then, just not as a country with one ruler, it was divided in many city states, Athens, Sparta, Thebes, Macedonia etc. And of course the Spartans or the Atheniasn considering the Macedonians and each other a threat since they were fighting each other very often. But they were are all speaking greek and consider themselves greeks

Great video as usual. Alexander is one of my favorites. I've always had a passion for history so as a career choice attended University to become a history teacher. I wanted to teach my younger students the love that I had & enjoy it. Later I taught my older college students to love it as much as myself. My friends call me the history geek but I don't care & take as a compliment. Thanks. 😊

He is such a fascinating historical figure, our main source for understanding the ancient philosophy of Stoicism, with his "Meditations" and being hailed as the last of "The Five Good Emperors of Rome".

You should cover Sylvia Plath. She was such a wonderful poet whilst having such a tragic life.

Burnin' Leather I’d rather see one on Womg Fei-Hung. But there are many stories. Ip Man already has mythological history, applied to his life, and Wong Fei-Hung did as well, but Ip Man’s stories sometimes are blended with Wong myths.
