in 1989 my wife and I had arranged for a trip to China which included the great wall and "THE GREAT SQUARE" - we were denied access to China from Hong Kong as she was in a wheelchair and this would affect the "morale" of those in China seeing her!

Are you deliberately taking the words out of context? That is clearly now what he said.
I actually visited it on 4th June 2014. I didn't even think of the significance of the date until I got there and ran into the security lines. You had to have your passport/ID scanned to get into the square, and there were literally bus loads of soldiers patrolling around. I'd never been so paranoid of trying to photograph anything all my life, lol.
I was there in 1991 & there were still dark reddish stains on the Square. It was heartbreaking and scary, even as a US citizen. We would go to college parties while there, officially Chinese students were forbidden from socializing with foreigners, but many snuck in, us foreigners loved when they showed up. But the boys' biggest pick up line was that they claimed to have been at Tiennamen Square. Except in Beijing, they had to keep quiet about it there. I was surprised they were so bold, but lol at first I believed them. By the 4th one from hundreds & hundreds of miles away from Beijing, we figured out it was a line. So strange, tbh...
Don't give up hope Karl. I never thought that the wall between the two Germany's would ever fall but it did.
Haven’t watched a Geographics vid in a while, a welcome surprise to see Karl! (Also the vid is a little quiet)

Im playing under half volume. Maybe you have some funny settings or something? I checked once I read your comment, to see. I occasionally have that issue with videos as well.
You should do an episode or segment on Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, Iran. Built in the early 17th century, it’s the second largest city square in the world, and an architectural marvel.
Thanks for sharing your holiday photos Karl!

Brilliant, late post from Austin TX. Your visiting, while not at the moment provides a tangible link...though not written by you. Excellent narrative presenting facts written by another. Feel sorry for Karl not being able to go back to China. 😔 Yet lots of "Where's Simon?" in the comments. Well Simon's got a trip booked to Beijing... 😅
There's a PBS documentary interviewing protesters from 89 who escaped and showed home video from within the Square. Before things turned deadly it was a surprisingly jovial mood within the protest. People were cooking outside together and singing songs, it looked almost like any other Chinese market (minus the slogan signs). Makes it worse when things exploded. The police and military were told a rumor that the protestors had smuggled in guns, a rumor that was pretty unlikely considering how strict gun ownership at all in China is but it's unfortunately an excuse you hear a lot when cops start firing on unarmed civilians just having a barbecue and holding a sign.
👀👀👀
the beating heart? is that a reference to the civilians that got beat to death by tanks in 1989?
