Nice .. but ... specs say they do not attenuate signals above about 1.5 Ghz. States that high frequency signals like 2.4 Ghz Wifi is not reliably blocked. Given that 4G runs at 2 - 2.1 Ghz - and most modern phones have 5 Ghz Wifi - then the signal blocking feature appear useless - unless you KNOW you only bring an old 2G phone running at 800 Mhz...

Original design intent was for folks like combat controllers mostly using cell, SAT-COMS, and GPS. If worried about WIFI, you can always turn that off on the device.

MIL-SPEC MONKEY Not to run an extended chain of me-right - you-right, but SATCOM is on an even higher frequency: “Satellite Communication (satcom) is based on a specific range of frequencies. The useable radio spectrum ranges from 1Ghz to 300Ghz, where its use for communications ends as the signal becomes infrared, X-Ray and visible light. For maritime satcom, we use the frequencies from 1Ghz up to approx. 30Ghz.” Usable range would be RFID to the low frequency Cellular bands. So credit cards should be safe. GPS - most of those are passive devices, not emitting much beyond a few meters. Just think the presenter should clearly state the use case - especially if you intend to go into say the Baltic states and think your Samsung Galaxy + MiFi are undetectable if stored in that case.

@@bodstrup Comms not my specialty, but the Darkvault was made to spec 90+ decibels of signal reduction between 300 and 1500 MHz, it's what the folks who use it in life and death situations specifically asked for. Not everyone needs that feature so is why the non-blocking version is also offered.

MIL-SPEC MONKEY I absolutely like the idea and the style. Now part of my job is designing coms solutions for people who really like not to get noticed, so I do read the specs carefully. One of the most concerning aspects is the persistent rumours that the baseband radio in a smartphone can be activated - and tracked - even if the phone is shut down (not just screen off). Removing the battery is the only safe option if no faraday bag is available.

How low profile is it? If I mounted this on the chest area of a carrier, would it interfere in anyway with rifle magazines?

that small padlock isn’t really secure but adds a layer of access prevention. the hexagon grid design on the orange is pretty cool. where can you get that?

You can get these exact model boxes without the overpriced Thyrm logo for $18 on AliExpress. And even that is overpriced for what this is. $70-90 for a plastic box from China is a total joke.

@@MILSPECMONKEY At the same time, it's hard to support Thyrm, who apply an outrageous markup, in essence, taking advantage of consumers, for what is essentially 3D printed plastic that has been proven to be made identical for a fraction of the price.
