Thunderbird #3 #6 Near Miss Caught on Tape

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

5/15/2020
Updated (5/17/2020): AFThunderbirds: The incident happened due to an aircraft unexpectedly appeared in the pilots' direct line of sight.
There is nothing negative here but an event we, formation pilots, can learn from, yet it's spectacular and #6 did a good recovery. Moreover, this event testifies the dangerous job our military doing every day to protect our country. Big thanks to USAF Thunderbirds for flying overs. We all appreciate their excellent work.

That is exactly what I wanted to comment on... To get back in formation (while turning and diving)... might not be using the right words I don't know anything about flying... Super impressive.. And what about that quick right then left, must have felt some G's and the aircraft being able to perform as directed... The beauty and power of Air-Force. I'll be searching what planes they fly after this. I only know of F-35 and F-22

There really wasn’t much danger of them colliding, These guys spend hundreds of hours per year flying within 2 feet of each other and have honed their reflexes to a razors edge and are so well attuned to their aircraft that’s it’s practically an extension of their body’s. Even #6 who had to break formation was able to rejoin in less than 12 seconds

Kevin Esparza the pilot most definitely barely felt any Gs on that maneuver. Very light turn and with the G suite on, it’ll drop a G, so he probably felt 2 Gs at most

#1 stopped the turn before any of the rest of them were ready for. You can see them all reacting instead of moving in unison. #6 got the heck outta dodge rather than risk a collision. #4 was a bit skittish for a minute or two afterward. When #3 made an unplanned move, #6 took his pre-planned out to give himself and #3 room. It all looks chaotic, but they practice for when things don't go as planned. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in that debrief.

I feel like there's a general life lesson here in preventing chain reaction accidents. #6 peeled off hard to give the others any space they needed to react--just in case things got crazy. It may look like overkill but it's a smart, courteous reaction for the greater good. The pilots on the outside flanks have the ability to safely break formation with conviction, while the others are comparatively trapped in formation and need to be much more calculated with their movements. This applies to many areas of life, the most obvious being driving: Don't tailgate, but more generally, don't trap other drivers unnecessarily during dangerous, high speed conditions. If you have have the luxury of space but they are surrounded, why not proactively move so that they have the option of reacting if they need to? A looser, less obvious connection is when walking on the sidewalk beside a busy road with someone much smaller than you, like a child. If you're walking between the small person and the road and a stray car careens onto the sidewalk (which only you notice), you have the ability to throw both yourself and the small person out of harm's way at the same time. But they don't have that same ability, simply because you are much heavier than them. You trap them, so they cannot save you OR themself. But if you simply stood on the traffic side and gave them the safer side, they could save themself, you can save yourself (by shoving them out of the way), and you can save both of you at the same time. It's just spatial courtesy and common sense, which sadly, doesn't seem very common.

You know road manners were once taught, including pedestrian etiquette. For example on a road with no sidewalk, walk on the side where vehicles will be coming towards you instead of from behind. And when there is a sidewalk do what you said. Keep pets, children, the elderly etc on the side farther from vehicles. In fact when crossing a two-way street I still instinctively change sides in the middle so that I'm always between the other person and oncoming vehicles.

So when any unplanned sudden movements occur each plane in that formation knows what to do to give everyone room to escape safely. In this case #1 initiated or didn't call out the turn. For all the people still not getting it. #1 determines the flight path, that is what the leader does. Going into the formation turn he detects an object in their flight path, in this case the police helicopter. So he has to abort the turn. The rest will always follow him, because they are always looking at the leader or the aircraft right next to them. It is a chain reaction. #6 breaking away to the right only looks aggressive because the F-16 is capable of doing that. And the reasons why he breaks away is never because of panic, it is because an immediate safety manoeuvre is required to stay within their own safety regulations. They train for both formation flying and evasive manoeuvres. This is what professionalism looks like.

6 did what any formation pilot would do he got out and away, kept eyes on never lost sight and then went into the rejoin when cleared by lead. Yes lead did slow and stop turn early and the whip action resonated through the formation. Good skill on all the aviators to recognize the issue and follow procedures for dropping out and to rejoin. Six showed a very important lesson here and that is to fly your airplane first especially over densely populated areas like they were in.

For those complaining about the voice over guy, it sounds like he might be in the helicopter from the audio quality of his mic. Whether he’s the actual pilot or a dedicated camera operator, the point is that they might not have as clear a picture of what’s going on. If it’s the pilot, he’s probably having to report what he’s seeing with his own eyes while flying his helicopter from a safe distance rather than benefiting from the zoomed image we’re getting. If it’s the camera operator, he’s still trying to keep the camera focused on the planes performing acrobatic maneuvers on what is probably a small monitor. The point is that these guys are trying to explain things while still accomplishing their primary tasks. If only they could have had one of the thousands of expert KZread flight specialists with them, to provide the narration.

You're not going there for any other purpose than to attack people who already know you are coming. You're not going there to bomb a power plant or ammunitions plant; you are going there specifically to attack people who are trained to blow your ass out of the sky. Wow, landing on that Carrier sounds real tough. How many different types of armament are trying to shoot you down? Oh that's right, none. But of course because you were in the navy so you somehow feel qualified to talk about it… which is why you were not smart enough to get into the Air Force..... so ignorant you actually talk about stuff you know nothing about. I presently work at a joint command training base. When they're being honest, 90% of the people in the navy say they tried to get into the Air Force and were rejected. That's a fact I hear weekly. @@tyrone-tydavis5858 Wow! From your unhinged response, I can tell you never spent a day in the Air Force. Video game much? There is always good natured ribbing among the services. They don't teach you that in video games. You need to go now. Mommy calling you for dinner. But you probably can't hear that way down in the basement! :) PS. Blue Angels kick Thunderbird ass!!

@@miketierney5421 Yeah, sure thing loser. Just because you can't possibly imagine it, it doesn't mean jobs like I had don't exist. Why don't you Google AFSC 303X3 and then places like Caliente and Range 63 and Tonopah … places they wouldn't allow people like you within 50 miles. Oh wait, you think they just say Hey there's a plane, hop in it and go blow some Sam sights up....... right clown??

That is what we call self preservation my friends. Everything is based off leads aircraft and all turns/maneuvers are more difficult for the outside jets. They are on the proverbial tail end of the whip.

Dwayne Thompson if it was a knock-it-off, they all would have bugged and and regrouped later
