Thule Cargo Box Spring Hinge Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A short video showing how to replace a broken spring hinge on a Thule cargo box. The box featured in this video is our trusty Thule Ascent 1700 where one of the hinges mysteriously broke while in storage. Fortunately, the hinges are extremely easy to replace and can be done so in a minute or so with a rubber mallet and some synthetic grease and a replacement hinge.
This procedure will apply to ALL other Thule boxes that use the same spring-loaded hinge design that is commonly shared on vintage, current, and likely future Thule cargo box designs.

Great video -- thanks. For those who don't have a rubber mallet handy, what I did was stand my cargo box on its end, partially open (a friend to hold the box steady would be helpful here, but I managed to do it alone), position the replacement hinge over the ball joint, and then slowly apply pressure with your foot. Worked like a charm.

Nice! I was afraid to try to pop it off and wrecking the box. But I guess a little elbow grease and a mallet is all I needed.

yes I was a bit paranoid myself as well but I figured that since it was a replaceable part that how hard could it REALLY be? It is after all just plastic.

I just tried to replace one of my lid lifters and the bottom ball joint that should remain attached to the box just snapped off--the metal broke! Shoddily built! So, I guess I will remain with only one hinge forever. . .

aw that sucks! You might be able to get a replacement balljoint piece. You do have a lifetime warranty on the box (assuming you're the OG owner) that Thule would likely pay to have it fixed. Give them a ring to explain the situation. Good luck.

Same to me 🤦‍♂️. Was Thule responsive to your warranty claim? Thanks for the video

Installed my brand new carrier yesterday and loaded it up. Couldn't get the key mech to lock. Wouldn't turn and the key was stuck. I was forced to open the other side with the spare key which I know you're not supposed to do, but I tried everything else. It was a fricking nightmare. The both arm disconnected in the process. We needed to get on the road so we just stuffed everything in the rear of my Outback wilderness. I regret buying it not realizing it was so cheapy constructed and especially at that inflated "Thule" brand price. I wish I had just bought a basket. Now I have to figure out how to get the key out of the tumbler. If I can repair it I'm selling that sucker cheap.

Where did you buy the hinges? Can you post the link?

the hinges were actually from an authorized Thule dealer. Just give them the old hinge or the model of the box you have and they'll hook you up. You can also find them online but you'll need to know the model of box you have.

@@rykerpeery6468 yep that is true but sadly I am not the OG owner of this box so I had to pay. Still… I found this box at an auto wrecker and paid $50 for it. New bing and lock totaled like $120 for the entire setup and good as new!

Not nearly as easy as shown if you have to do the other side, where Thule has inexplicably put a bar in the way. Couldn't use a screwdriver levered between bar and hinge. Eventual solution was to put a shim between bar and hinge, and then use rubber mallet to hammer on the bar to force hinge on.

I'm not sue what model of box you have or what the style of hinge you're referring to that uses a bar. All my Thule boxes use this style of hinge and are all super easy to replace (thankfully).

The hinge doesn't use a bar. There is a bar in the way that spans the box laterally.@@piercedasian
