Throwing Bones - Bone Reading - Bone Casting - Divination

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

An introduction on bone casting/throwing for divination! How do you read bones and how to create your own set? Please keep in mind that this is just one version in a very diverse tradition of divination, but it is one that I love a lot.

I do something similar with bottle caps. They are all different colors and most have some kind of symbols on the top of them. One of them I glued a little mirror into. I plan to add a compass to one.

OH AND Pennie’s galore!!! Currently on a spiritual journey and opening myself up to new forms of connecting to my guides and ancestors. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. XOXO

I just typed a rant to my friends in private about how the meanings of male / female erase enby folk (like me) literately one second before you mentioned you also leave the options open to assign them/ them. Bless you for this, my frustration around the erasure of my identity is so high I ranted too quickly. I added to my post that you did give this option and thank you, thank you for involving all of us into your practice, it means so much. So much cause so often we are not included, so bless you, thank you.

Love that you included nonbinary, will be helpful as I'm genderfluid and that comes up a lot so that's actually super helpful. Also I've been interested in bone casting since I was a kid but also have complicated feelings over owning another life's bones/body post death. I went into several of the places I've kept strange trinkets/objects in my house and found myself building the beginnings of a set and considering looking into it further because of this so thanks!

That's great! I loved building the set; it was so much fun finding little things and picking up on the memories associated with the items right away. I completely understand the complicated feelings regarding animal parts. I'm of the feeling that as long as they were acquired ethically, then the usefulness of the bones give the animal's parts renewed purpose. But it is absolutely a complex territory to tread and a very personal choice, and I understand anyone not being comfortable with it.

  • @Chr0chet_Obsessed

I feel you, the best way I think of it is like you’re giving the animal renewed purpose through using the bones, while honoring the fact that they had to pass in order for you to get the bones in the first place. As long as you’re respectful and they’re ethically sourced I’ve come to find most animal spirits don’t mind :)

I started divination with bones. I am glad i did because i wasn't tempted to follow any set meanings for my bones. I see many people that assign tarot meanings to the bones, which is fine. For me, I'm happy that my bone meanings came naturally. When I painted my bones they began to look like animals. So i intuitively gave them meanings based on what i thought the new painted animal would represent. For instance, one bone liked like a rhino. It's meaning is confidence because i assume that a rhino is pretty confident. 😂. The best thing i have to offer is to create meanings that are nouns, verbs, and adjectives. It creates sentences when you do your read. Add arrows to help you know which direction to read in.

Divination has never been my thing, just never vibed with it, but I've had this video in my "Watch Later" for a few months now, and I don't regret watching it. I had considered making a baggie of things I like, and form some sort of divining technique with them. Lucky for me, witches of yore already did a lot of the work, so all I gotta do is gather cool stuff and overthink about what they represent. I'm gonna have a lot of fun with this :) Great video, super glad I watched it!

I've only really known about bone casting for a week or two now, but it sounds like something really interesting and I'd love to get into it! I feel very attracted to this form of divination (even if I haven't really done much, if any, divination before), and I'll definitely be learning more about it and slowly building my set. After my first time learning about it, I actually went to my alter not too long after and found something that I'll definitely be using in bone throwing; a small wooden heart I carved myself.

New subscriber here! My first divination tool was the pendulum, probably because my grandfather taught my mom "divination" with the dousing rods, to find water. Also I've experienced/used tarot. Through meditation I'm practicing with a black mirror that I made. With the "bones" I'm drawn because my mother collected off items that interested her though she did not do anything with them. Needless to say I find myself doing the same.

My bones set does include some actual bones lol I have a piece of a deer leg bone and jawbone, both relate to the intuitive nature of deer spirit medicine. I don’t use these in readings but store them on top of my kit as a pure charging energy when the tools are in repose. In my set I use for divination I have the shoulder bone of a turkey vulture, which tells one to be conscious of where they’re putting their energy. I have other various bone pieces; a piece of a possum jawbone, a prehistoric horses tooth, antler tip, buffalo tooth, a smaller wildcat tooth and my own wisdom tooth. These bones all came to me on hikes, were sold by antiquities collectors or were sold by wildlife preserves where they are ethically sourced and used to fund the preserve. Some of my ‘non-bone’ bones lol include a military emblem which relates to structure and/or warrior spirit. I have a broken rhinestone cross which relates to false gurus, false prophets or spiritual manipulation. I have various foreign coins which differ in face value and relate to material matters. Other various items include a plastic baby from a king cake, a shell, a piece of coral, a seed pod and a couple different crystal gemstones, all relating to the properties of that stone. Lastly I have a small figurine which is represents goddess energy and a small silver skull which is a self signifier.

I travel often and while I like the idea of using things I find, I have been considering combining six cleromancy items with my brass rune staves. Kinda the same train of thought as combining Oracle and tarot cards in a reading. The problem is I think my self charm (a copper moon coin) and those brass rune staves will inevitably break almost anything other than metal/antler/hard wood. I think even most bones will be damaged.

I like to shake the bag instead of mixing the items with my hand, and then I reach straight down in and pluck something out as quickly as possible with just my index finger and thumb. Kind of hard to explain haha but I find this has been the easiest way to prevent feeling around until I find purchase on something or subconsciously choose. You can also try tilting the bag or container and shaking it gently until 3 items fall out.

I wouldn't set a specific number. Just be sure you have enough items to cover various themes and possible answers. The more you have, the clearer your reading will be, but you could even just start with two items--"yes" and "no"--and grow it from there.
