    I had one break on a fish last month, granted it was a GT but still it shouldn't have happened using PE4 line on a rod designed and marketed to catch giant european wels catfish (they can grow upwards of 200 lbs..) So thanks for the advice I'm going to send them an e-mail

    I like to check out the rods with an OCD mentality at shops before purchasing, looking for things like minor marks or scratches that probably been banged around from shipping. I also bring a Q tip to wipe around the inner guides to check for chips in the inserts. Just a little tip

    point your rod to the right [4 o'clock] or to the left [8 o'clock] instead of up when fighting a jack. You can make them change direction and zig zag them in. I caught a jack 34.4 lbs off the wall at Good Sam on 8 lb Ande Tournament in just 20 minutes. His initial run was 300 yards.

    I've done lots of freshwater and saltwater. Nothing fights like an open saltwater fish. Albacore, yellow fin, yellowtail, even barracudas. A pelagic fish swims across the oceans. Tuna will circum-navigate the Atlantic or Pacific. No fat, out of shape tunas. No bass or trout will tear off 800 yards of line from a 70 wide reel at full drag.

    yes I'm very curious about MHX blanks. The problem with SW Florida is there are no good tackle stores within a 2 hour drive so you can't see and touch before you buy. Most shops around here cater to the masses of inexperianced people who will fish with whatever, not the discerning angler.

    The rods were most likely damaged previously… could have been anything from a jig hitting the blank during a cast, the rod falling, shipping, etc. The weak spot eventually fails. Oh well, its an excuse to buy new gear :-)

  • @williammarshall4277

    @williammarshall4277

    2 жыл бұрын

    I worked in a tackle shop for years and a jig wacking the blank is usually the culprit. It causes a crack that you don’t see and eventually fails during a heavy cast.

  • @fmfdocfmf
    @fmfdocfmf Жыл бұрын

    Lawson, your rod snapped because carbon rod blanks are brittle and a tiny little chip can cause a rod to snap like that. Also, every blank has an axis that it bends at, so if your cast is not in line with that axis you will exert extra stress on those spots with small chips. If you lay your rods on a tailgate, wrap them with a protective covering. Fiberglass rods do not have this problem - but you exchange that for less sensitivity.

    Bummer about the rods. It could have been how you are transporting the rods in your truck. I broke a rod because I put it through the rear sliding window and drove down a gravel road. It broke on the first cast right where it was resting on the window frame.

    I think your line to line knot got stuck in a guide on the rod break herd the noise then take the momentum and weight of the top water prolly led to that event.. which tbh is still totally un acceptable 😂I felt your pain on that one being that its a surf rod idk if its technically a casting rod which is why it has bigger guides easier to get tangles on them casting that is prolly why it snapped being a lot longer then our regular 7' -7-6 8' inshore stuff
