  • @williamaungleyraud

Personally I prefer the thumb throttle because it allows me to have my remaining fingers resting on the brake lever, in many cases as I was cruising around, a car pops out of a driveway or a garage without checking and having my finger right by the brake lever I many times could let go of the throttle and immediately yank on the brake to stop the bike, where on the half-twist throttle you're gripping on the throttle and your handle grip at all the time, so that additional fraction of time you need to let go it the twist and reach your fingers over the lever to then press hard on it, doesn't pass me the confidence of control feeling. It might be something just psychological but having my fingers ready to press the brake makes me feel in control of the bike, than the bike in control of me. So in my hike I also have a horn button wrapped around my handle grip, so my thumb its on the throttle, my index finger is by the horn button and the left 3 fingers on the brake lever. So while I brake I honk the heck out of the driver to wake him up while I stop my bike to avoid a collision. Seems a lot, but saved me every time. Thanks God.

I have been riding bicycles since I was 7 years old. July 14th 2002 I first rode my hammer ebike. I watched a lot of videos they said there's a lot of power but I didn't believe it LOL. So I take off I'm at the End of the Street faster than I can believe it it's a short Street. I was going to turn right but with the giant fat tires is not so easy so I almost believed then I went up on the sidewalk and crashed. And I hit my nub straight down on the sidewalk. And then I got up and rode 12 more miles and that was the most fun I've had in years. Sitting here trying to heal my foot then I lost my leg after years of trying to save it so I've hardly been anywhere except the doctor and shopping and now I am free yay yay for e-bikes and I used my stimulus for something good that should last me a very long time if I keep it maintained. It's a lot like a regular bicycle Minus the electric motor and being 70 pounds and the giant tires. I truly believe in E bikes. I was researching and the first ebike looks like a motorcycle was in 1895 but they didn't have the distance please do and that was made by Bosch I wonder if it was made in Rochester New York near me they have a place Bausch & Lomb well they used to.

That where short way twist throttles come in handy. You can rest your pointing finger on the break and still twist it. Or change the brakes. But thumb throttle is cool too. I just like twist better. But your points are valid. Look at quads these have thumb throttles for a reason. I ride long empty paths so of course I choose the twist. It’s an easy ride nothing to worry about.

Just bought my first ebike and it came with a thumb throttle that has cruise control built in. After holding the throttle down for approximately 6 seconds the cruise control kicks in and you can release the throttle and the bike maintains what ever speed you were going. To turn it off you simply tap either brake and it cuts off the motor. Love this feature, use it all the time on my 20 mile round trip commute to work.

Hey Mike, you have not mentioned the "feeling" of a twist throtle. I have used the thumb throtle, but the twist has a major advantage: really controlling the motor. If you press the thumb throtle, you can feel a certain gradual power increasing, as you are pressing the thumb button. But with twist throtle, that's more let's say "fine tuned" I can twist the throtle, just to keep the motor rotating really slow and being able to accelerate smoother, just like when having the more expensive controllers, for example ASI bac, or phaserunner. These controllers are known to keep the motor rotating. This of course applies only for mid drive motors, i have tested and noticed this while using bbs02b and bbshd motors.

Not sure if this has been covered by one of your older videos, but is it possible to run two battery packs (both with BMSs) on one bike, so that we can use two chargers? Or what options are there to charge faster than the usual e-bike 5~6 amp (fast chargers)? Am asking because using a 30~40 AH battery with one 5~ amp charger would just take too long to charge the battery up to full if its been run down reasonably low. thanks! ps... is there a way to do a variable regen braking system? (edit again) heh... google algorithm must be reading my comments, a video explaining this question popped into my suggested videos list, lol seems that it will mainly depend on the controller and if it can accept this option or not. thnx

Eureka! I viewed your excellent videos and tried adding a thumb to my Himiway Cruiser with not altogether satisfactory results and off it came. I prefer to twist but found the half-grip throttle clumsy to modulate. Then an epiphany: Those flattened comfy grips are the problem. As I try to rotate the throttle with the right side of my palm, the left side is held in place by the right-side half-grip. I replaced both grips with conventional round grips slightly smaller in diameter than the throttle and now I have great control. The shape of the new grips allows my palm to slip in concert with the rotation of the throttle. What do you think? Have I just advanced the half-throttle solution, at least for this setup?

Does anyone have an opinion on (or a link to a review of) the different handlebar mitts for cold-weather riding? Over the last month I randomly came across a few comments on them, and what I heard is that none of them work real well in terms of keeping cold air completely out and/or not interfering with handlebar controls etc. Also they all seem to be a pain to quickly take on & off the bars - no quick release. Just got a radmission. A well-designed pair would be very helpful for me this winter, just need to zero in on the best available. Cold hands will definitely limit my my winter ridng. Thanks.

Any advice on slowing down my e-scooter? I have a Velocifero Mad Truck. I wanted a scooter like this hoping to go around my land having relaxed trips to enjoy the view and also keep an eye on areas that needed maintenance. In other words, I’m not interested in going too fast. My land has many small trails and turns which means I need to be able to have more control on the speed and because the scooter is too sensitive it keeps “jumping” as I try to have control. Really annoying. I’ve been doing some research but still feel lost. Any suggestions on a throttle that allows me to control the speed (slow, medium, fast)? I wouldn’t mind trying a thumb, trigger or twist throttle. I just want the damn thing to slow down. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, regards Tom

Hey Micah Micah here I was wondering if you know of any turn signal setups that you can add to an ebike or maybe you have one of your own design. I really hate having to remove my hands from the controls just to let people behind know where I'm going, and that becomes increasingly unnerving when you have a passenger. Turn signals would help a lot

When making a conversion from MTB to a mid-motor, what is the breaking point to change the drive train to a heavier duty? 500w, 750w or 1000w?

For me 500w was not enough and 750w made me want more so I ended up jumping a few levels straight to 1600w..... Now I plan to start jumping voltages, from 48v to 52v or just straight to a 60v 3kw motor. I can't help it.... It's like working on a dirt bike or motorcycle but it's not dirty or as finicky, it's just plug and play power and I'm addicted¡! LoL

I am glad I watched your video because I just bought a e bike with the half twist throttle and was thinking about going to a thumb throttle. So for now I will use the one I have and see how I like it before I decide to change it. I also agree with you on the right side throttle since I rode a motorcycle for many years and that is also what I am use to. first timer on your video and now I am going to subscribe as soon as I finish this comment. Thank you.

Question: is it more power efficient to have a 52V battery vs a 48V battery or lower? My reasoning, for a fixed power draw from the engine, at a higher voltage, the current would be lower, meaning less power dissipation. Let's assume the controller can handle all voltage ratings.

as my Chinese 500 watt conversion gives me full power on peddling I have a thumb throttle and an adjustable stop made from an old lamp bracket. I can set it a comfortable speed and just hold it down. Once I release whilst peddling the full power comes back in for the hilly bits. Its worked out better than I anticipated as I am used to riding motor cycles with twist grip and at first wished I had that set up.

Can you please make a video about torque sensors and more specifically how exactly to install them and wire them. There is no much information about that. Can I use my existing controller or do I need a special one, do I need a Cycle Analyst etc.

  • @codbug

My bike came with a half-twist. Used it for several months before trying out a cheap thumb throttle on a whim. Found I had way more precise speed control with the thumb throttle, a less cluttered cockpit, and more constant stability while also being able to keep my fingers rested on the brake lever at all times for an overall safer and more stable experience for someone who occasionally has to ride on ice and slush. I've not experienced any of the downsides listed. My bike's controller has PAS and cruise control, I had more issues with bounce affecting throttle on the half-twist with my weight being partially distributed onto the throttle, and I routinely commute in sub-freezing temperatures without issue by simply wearing gloves--something I'd be doing in the cold, regardless of if I was on a bike or not. May be worth mentioning that I've been playing video games for over 35 years and am a pianist, and have a strong, well-conditioned thumb, and possibly an under-developed wrist, so others' mileage may vary. The difference in analog precision for me however was night and day. To borrow an analogy from gaming, it was like switching from an analog stick to a mouse for aiming.

"The difference in analog precision for me however was night and day." Are you saying that the half-twist throttle sucked because it was not analogue?

  • @codbug

    @codbug

    3 ай бұрын

@@jason.arthur.taylor Nope, the operating word was precision. My thumb with no other forces being exerted on it could make much finer adjustments than my entire wrist which was also supporting part of my weight, gripping the handlebars for stability and keeping my fingers within reach of the brakes (and later my turn signals). It was easier to maintain a stable grip, especially over bumpy terrain and still have very precise control with flexing a loose thumb than twisting my entire wrist. With the thumb I could accelerate much more slowly and hold any speed I wanted without interference from any other factors.

Li-ion batteries are tricky - they require balance when hooked in Parallel. Ie 4 batteries and One is weaker than the others - goofs up the set. Weak battery pulls power from stronger ones during operation. They say battery life is compromised. I would consider a DPST "A-B" style switch so you got all Main or all Aux battery power going to Controller. What I'm planning for a Lectric XP - Band clamps to secure a Hainan style battery on top crossbar. You only do this for long rides due to weight. Check Bolton e bike channel, he has something about a do-dad for Aux batteries he sells. Fyi, stopped watching him since he's a 1 story house - a gambler - slow to the punchline. Micah is excellent at getting to the point and a better Electrician / engineer. Paralleling Different battery packs with different mAH batteries is too iffy for me, even if both are fully charged. Not sure the batteries would match the same for a long ride. Plus they're expensive. 52V, 20AH battery is already a big one, sounds like you drive hard throttle fast, long distances and a steep hill at the end.

Let s say that with a single charger (i.e. 58.8V) you want to charge 2 52V batteries at the same time and in order to do that you make a 'Y type' splitter with 1 female terminal and 2 male terminals. Assuming that the 2 batteries before recharging show different voltage level, say one os at 43V, the other at 46 V. What precautions would you take to prevent current running from the 46v battery to the 43v battery through the Y splitter? Maybe diodes on each positive wire? Or maybe following a rigid sequence, charger to splitter first and then splitters to batteries, will suffice?
