THRIFT STORE & VINTAGE SHOP FINDS FOR JUNK JOURNALING: What I Look For and Great Finds!

Hello Friends!
I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days thrift store and vintage shop hopping. Now that I'm into making journals and slow stitching what I look for has evolved. I still love hunting for vintage items for my craft room organization and I've always had a thing for old books, textiles and trims but now that I'm into this journal making thing I look at shopping in a whole new way.
In this video, I'll share my latest haul along with what I look for when junky book shopping. Then stay tuned because I have a couple more videos in the works where I'll literally share some of the goodies I found with you as well as how to take apart old books and what to do with the covers and vintage pages.
Happy Hunting!
Sherri ❤️

That little green book, I think was the history of Ireland, you could use chalk or crayon or something similar to lay them on their side & rub them over a piece of paper on top of the cover to show the intaglio style pattern on the covers! Maybe scan that paper or just the cover alone, it might be recognised by the scanner. I would be very interested to see the outcome if you did anything with it. I love old books & have many, so many that I purchased to do what you do, but can't seem to bring myself to pull them apart. Once you do, it's gone. I have trouble finding anything before 1922 from any source. So watching this style of video is great. But when I saw the 2 sets of map books, I thought, they're the cutest thing, especially with the holder. I was disappointed that the blue one was water damaged & an obvious choice to pull apart, but maybe you could use the covers to put little journals into & put all 4-5 into the holder. I'd love to do that! Or see someone do it. Thx so much for sharing

Hi Belinda. Thank you for watching and for your comments. I know what you mean about pulling books apart. That’s why I first search for the ones already damaged and falling apart. I feel like they could have a new life and don’t feel as guilty. Even then I have a hard time with some. So they sit on a shelf and I look at them from time to time and they tell me when they’re are ready to move on. 🥰

The engraved gold cover on Webster's dictionary is AMAZING!! On things like a dictionary, I'm not sure copyright is applicable. Unless you're going write your own dictionary and use their definitions lol. But where I live, and my inability to get around much, I don't have access to the beautiful old engraved covers like the ones you showed. So, you might think about selling sets of those type of covers. What size were your jumbo playing cards? They look bigger than the ones I got on Amazon. I used one deck as part of my 100 day project. I painted gel medium on them then collaged nice backgrounds for my hearts. I did 100 days of hearts. They turned out pretty good, I think. If you're interested in working with them, search for Altered Playing Cards on KZread. Several people have done them. Probably on Instagram and Facebook too. In the watercolor book, I think the blank pages are on the backs of the colored plates of finished watercolors. I think they do that because it's printed separately then collated into the rest of the book. I noticed when you flipped through the Robin Hood book that the pages with color illustrations were blank on the back too. Sorry to go on so long lol. But you found so much fun stuff!! I'm trying not to be so envious hahaha. Thank you for a great video! 😊❤️

How long does copyright last? I have several old books from my grandparents and I want to scan some of the pages.

Hi Jennifer. I'm not an attorney so I just researched copyright on the internet and found this short summary that I keep a copy of handy to refer to myself: To determine whether a work is in the public domain and available for use without the author’s permission, you first have to find out when it was published. Then apply the following rules to see if the copyright has expired: All works published in the United States before 1924 are in the public domain. Works published after 1923, but before 1978 are protected for 95 years from the date of publication. If the work was created, but not published, before 1978, the copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. For works published after 1977, the copyright lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years. However, if the work is a work for hire (that is, the work is done in the course of employment or has been specifically commissioned) or is published anonymously or under a pseudonym, the copyright lasts between 95 and 120 years, depending on the date the work is published. Lastly, if the work was published between 1924 and 1963, you must check with the U.S. Copyright Office to see whether the copyright was properly renewed. If the author failed to renew the copyright, the work has fallen into the public domain and you may use it. I hope this is helpful but I encourage everyone to do their own research as well.

I was planning to do a video next on old books and taking them apart, which ones to scan, which to just use the pages so I will also include a bit about copyright in making decisions. I have done a little more research in preparing for this video to show some examples of calculating whether something is in public domain or not. I hope you'll watch for it as I found some good charts.

How do you go about the copyright on the books you take apart, make into packages & sell as a kit for others to do their journalling? You'd be selling copyright works.

You make a very good point. In my thinking, I’m not copying it and selling it. I’m taking the actual printed work as it was originally sold and reselling it. Think of buying a used book at a thrift store or garage sale. I think of it that way. The same with the buyer taking that piece of original paper printed as it was originally sold and putting it in their artwork/journal to sale. They are not making multiple copies of it to use and then sell which would not be ok. I hope this is helpful. I’m not claiming to be an expert but this is my understanding and interpretation. 🥰
