I loved these changes. I volunteer at a small used furniture shop our church runs to help fund our charity work. Often we end up with so many lamps. I can use these ideas to fix some of them up.

That gold lamp turned out so beautiful. Was worth the extra effort you put into it. Redoing lamp shades intimate me. But it so worth it with those old shade designs. Using that gold stuff brings the lamps to a whole different level. Love it all.

Those frame bars in lamp shades are referred to as ribs, I believe. Appreciate your tip about using clothes pins to clamp the fabric. And I enjoy the gilding wax on the details of most darker colors, not just black. Dark wax can be used on light colors for a similar effect, in a shabby chic vein. Your inspiration for breathing new life into tired treasures is a welcome boost, and your details on how to go about the various steps involved are so helpful, especially for beginners to upcycling furniture like me. Please, consider pronouncing MOD Podge correctly. I know lots of people get in the habit of calling it Modge Podge, but that always feels a bit dodgy to me. Just a pet peeve of mine, I guess.

The brass on the lamp has been sprayed with a clear enamel. Don’t use steel wall on brass because it scratches the soft copper alloy. Once I get the enamel off are use “Brasso.” It is brilliant and the only way to clean brass alloys. I cleaned an antique, wood and brass, 3 1/2 foot ships steering wheel for my father. It came up beautiful. If I am not getting anywhere I soak the brass in vinegar (if there is no enamel.) The brass, bronze or copper will turn pink. Once cleaned with “Brasso” the item is beautiful. To keep the shine use a clear enamel for brass, bronze and copper. BTW. your lamps are beautiful and are a passion for Hubby and myself. Cheers from Australia.

The reason why the brass lamp didn’t polish up easily was because originally, it was lacquered after being polished. Lacquering preserves the bright look. But, the lacquer was old and the acids in your polish removed it. Lacquer is smart - will save you many hours of polishing!

Thanks for sharing the info! I knew of an elderly lady who had a lot of brass pieces in her home. She would say she had it ‘dipped’ so maybe that’s what she was referring to. She also polished it often - every couple of weeks - using Brasso. Her brass was a beautiful deep rich tone. It’s probably because of the dipping! Thanks for sharing your info😊

I just subscribed to your channel and I love the lamp makeovers I too have made over many lamps and lampshades and I was doing one for my daughter and boy are you right about being careful when you’re using dictionary pages. I was using dictionary pages and some cut outs of some peonies. it turned out so beautiful, but I did not pay any attention. After I had found the word Peone for the flower I just kept going through the dictionary and using the pages with the letter P and you guessed it right on the back there was a P word for a male part ha ha ha ha ha. Neither my daughter or I noticed it for about two weeks and then one day I was looking at it and I’m like does that say what I think it says and….. yes it did😂

You showed a shade with a lot of small pletes which I instantly recognized on a floor lamp I currently have. Haha. I like mine fine, but you have a lot of great ideas. I had an old, tired looking brass lamp that was the right style & height for it's spot so I bought a spray can of stone. It goes on sorta rough. I cleaned the lamp first and used a primer. After the 2 coates of the stone, I flecked tiny bits of moss green on it. It is such an improvement & it does look like a stone lamp base.

years ago I bought two lamps at the Goodwill bins. They had four separate metal pieces that looked possibly oriental. I am an artist and dislike even numbers. Took both lamps to a man who fixes etc. lamps. Because if I had gone with three of the pieces the lamp would have been too short. So he did one with five pieces and that meant the second lamp was no longer useable. Unfortunately I had a renter in the home for several years and she took the odd ;pieces when she moved. I keep hoping to find another lamp but even looking on Ebay and other places have never seen another one. The pieces are probably brass or possibly copper. and have stamped design onto half.I love how you make new and better from old and tired.

Magnets only stick to ferrous (iron based) metals. Just because a magnet doesn’t stick doesn’t mean brass necessarily. It could also be aluminum, zinc, copper, bronze, or other non ferrous metals. Other metals can be plated to look like brass and could be damaged by polishing.

A few comments on your magnet demonstration....magnets are attracted to iron ( which steel contains). So you are correct, a magnet will not stick to brass. But that does not prove the yellow metal is brass...magnets also do not stick to zinc, copper, bronze, aluminum, etc. All its proves is that it is not common steel or iron. Also, the steel wool you showed is not stainless. Magnets do not stick to (most) stainless steel. The steel wool is just that - steel wool.
