Three Phase in a domestic house REALLY....

A good look at the Schneider IKQ distribution board going into a domestic home.
We have a good run around during the 1st fix stage and will be revisiting this one lots in 2023.
We have a 22kW EVSE going in, Three phase submains, Air conditioning and paintable circuit accessories!

My house in Thailand is being built with 3-phase. Thailand does not have Split-phase like america, so single-phase is not enough power. I have one of the phases set up for generator/solar. Important things are attached to that circuit

In Germany three-phase is pretty much standard in domestic dwellings. And actually single appliances with a demand of more than 4.6 kVA must be connected three-phase. That rule doesn't come from the VDE, that is from the DNOs here. So a kitchen cooker circuit is usually three-phase here. In most cases fused with 3xB16 A. In modern installations usually 5x2.5mm² NYM-J cables are used, the wiring of the circuit must be designed so that you could upgrade to 3x20 A by simply changing the MCBs or the RCBO. In older installations from the 1980s they sometimes even used 5x1.5mm² for that purpose, sufficient for 3x16A on installation reference method C, but not that future proof. And also, depending on the length of the cable run, not that good when considering the voltage drop. The three-phase has one big advantage: Reduced amount of copper. You need more conductors, but the total cross-sectional area is up to 50% smaller, compared to a single phase circuit dimensioned for the same demand. Just do the math, 5x2.5mm² vs 3x10mm²...and it's easier to install. I find it quite interesting that no one in the UK really considerated this earlier, especially when doing such things like ring circuits to spare copper. The cookers are still 230V, their load is just distributed onto the three lines. Back in the old days of metal heating plates it was a large and a small heating plate on one line (L1 and L2). And the baking oven supplied by L3. That distribution is made inside of the cooker itself, if you decide to connect the cooker to single phase you'll have to insert copper or brass bridges into the terminals of L1, L2 and L3 and connect your single line to one of the three.

Good tidy board install. Probably be seeing a few more 3 phase boards in domestic installations with all these EV chargers and heat pumps to go in.... Hope you have a good Christmas and all the best to you for 2023. Thanks for all the videos this year.

Yeah I guess it will either go that route or the incoming renewables might suffice and buffer demand on the grid. I think the later, time will tell. Have a lovely Christmas and New Year.

I will be building my own house in a few years time, long time dream about to come to fruition. I want a TP supply for my new workshop, many of my colleagues said I was daft but now with ev chargers and heat pumps TP supplies will be needed to handle the load. I am also hoping that TP will allow greater solar capacity. I have a few bnib Schneider MerlinGerin boards and a ton of breakers and rcbos squirrelled away for the project but due to the constant reg changes they are obsolete. Looking forward to next video. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. All the best.

Interesting, in Finland most domestic households even apartment buildings will get a there phase service. Between 25 and 63A. Retrofits of old buildings will always bring 3 phase.

Great presentation as always. Scary times with the probable increase demand for 3 phase distribution within a domestic premises and becoming more like a comercial premises. This is why I am not in favour of any dumpling down of any training just to cover domestic. I appreciate possibly there will not be huge demand for the connection of three phase equipment. There will be number of electricians and trainees under experienced in this area and have probably had chosen to leave three phase alone, because of this. I haven't seen much coverage in the electrical press covering the subject and emphasising the need to be adequately trained for forthcoming demand. I think your training facility is going to become quite busy. Merry Christmas to you and your team. Have a good one.

Traditional apprentices are going nowhere. The new domestic electricians might be the ones to save the grid and requirement for 3 phase. Via renwables efficency. I see immense value in that path. The status quo is a failed system, time to move on.

If you get the PoN version of the board then you don’t have the fly leads for the RCBOs. They’re Uber expensive though at circa £80 per RCBO.

personally , as with most DBs id slot the gland plate so much better for moving cables in & out , than bush & lockring , especially if the board has loads of ciruits , trying to add at a later date is a pain for the next spark, IMO

Very interested in this one as we're going to be in exactly the same position - Three phase supply upgrade for a domestic house because of the workshop and solar. We'll possibly have an 8kVA UPS for the house to go in as well so considering a second single phase board just for the circuits protected by that. What are you going to do for the SPD on the three phase board - A separate enclosure just for the SPD? Also what load has been specified to the DNO - 40kVA? Do the DNO not want to put in an outdoor meter cabinet or are they quite happy to have it indoors? Only comment I'd make is that I'd have rather seen the trunking from the bottom going up the right-hand side so that the supply cables don't need to cross it when they are added.

  • @electrician247

Spd Will be alongside the tails isolator close to intake as possible. Tails won't cross the trunking, floor to be dug out and containment will be extended to allow the tails to utilise it. Dno wanted the supply internal customer to dig out entry point/hockey stick for them. 40kVA minimum but conversations ongoing with dno.

Different product standard for domestic CCUs to attain the 23kVA rating. TPN is different but the same to a point lol. No need for the door to self close. Indeed some single phase CCUs can be left in the open position. Which is more of a concern than this. Good question though.
