3 PHASE BOARD WIRING - THREE PHASE ELECTRICS - MIXED BOARDS - HOW TO AND CONVERTING TO SINGLE PHASE

In this video we look at how to wire a three-phase distribution board including three-phase only, and three phase plus neutral. And we will also look at adding single phase circuits to a three-phase board, a mixed board in other words, and then consider one way of changing the whole board to single phase.
There are many types of distribution board, so here, we will keep it very simple with enough information to enable you to understand just about any board you will come across and help you to appreciate what is happening in that pre-wired board.
Some questions that have been asked have included …
How should I wire a three-phase board?
Can I mix 3 phase and single phase?
Is it possible to convert it to single phase only?
And in this introductory video we will find out.
Always work on a dead board whenever possible and practice safe isolation procedure and lock-off.
Always work within your limits and skills.

    Hi Dave, Thanks for another informative piece. I heard recently about a case where a neutral was left out on a DB board and the main switch was turned on causing 400v to float across all 3 phases. I understand they are connected to the neutral at the source (delta/star) but not fully understanding how you can end up with 400v going through each individual phase & consequently damaging 230v equipment. If you ever have the chance to explain this, i & hopefully many would find it very educational. 👍

    Great video as always Dave! Personal gripe of mine which you never mentioned though is cable/conductor numbering. Nout worse than working in a highly populated board full of singles where the Neutrals and CPC's are mixed up and not in the correctly numbered terminals!!

    Do you consider Load balancing when adding Single Phase circuits from a 3 phase board that al ready has a 3p Circuit Breaker? I have a medium printer that works on a 3 phase supply, 10 amp per phase, but i need to add a Single phase heater that consumes 15Amp, is there a way to avoid this imbalance?

  • @learnelectrics4402

    @learnelectrics4402

    you can only balance it if you have other loads that can be switched to different phases to balance things. Look at the overall balance on the whole board with a clamp meter.

    Dave. I wonder why the Earth has to pass through the same point as the Line and Neutral conductors in a metal board? Considering the board is bonded to Earth I cannot think of a reason... Any idea? Thanks again! Mark.

  • @BlaqRaq

    @BlaqRaq

    This is to ensure a zero sum current through the hole and no eddy currents n the casing. Remember that there is also the possibility of earth fault currents! Hence the reason for all five (5) conductors of the same circuit to pass through the same port.

    I still don't understand if single phase boards/consumer units supplied from a three phase board share the same main earth from the supply? Lets say i have 1 three phase board supplying 3 single phase boards,to measure Ze would only the main earthing from the distribution board need to be disconnected to measure Ze or you have to do this for the other 3 single phase boards(do they have different main earthing conductors?)

  • @learnelectrics4402

    @learnelectrics4402

    Ze is measured at the point at which the supply enters the building. You will only need to disconnect the earth at the DB where you are testing. This video will help on this link. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l32Bko-uhte8YKg.html

    @@learnelectrics4402 Fantastic video,so for measuring Zdb you still disconnect earth at each subsequent consumer unit to get the measurement,thanks. Wish I could tip a coffee right now.
