Roundabouts seem like the least worse solution to a problem. They work fine if you're local and know the layout. If you're new and in heavy traffic they can lead you into late decisions and rushed manoeuvres. Drivers that are not experienced or on the ball with their observations and signals often come a cropper on them.

@@RichardSteelUKou don't need to use mapping software to negotiate a roundabout. Remember there was a time when no one had GPS navigation systems or smart phones. Learn to read the road signs and road markings. They tell you all you need to do. They really do. Work on your obsevational skills, learn to "read" the road. This is a critically important skill when driving. There have been too many cases of people blindly following satnavs, turned left because their satnav told them to do it and the driver has quite literally ended up in a river. It's stupid and it is unnecssary. So set to work on reading the road and the signs and markings.
@RichardSteelUK
Жыл бұрын
@@deang5622 I would just like you to know that being able to drive with a satnav is now actually a requirement for passing the UK driving test because they make driving safer and more efficient for everyone. Did you know that Google Maps will warn you of hazards present on the carriageway in real time such as stopped vehicles and debris in the road? Furthermore, I am not sure how familiar you are with algorithmic game theory and the academic research into Braess's paradox but blindly following road signs increases traffic density in all areas, whereas modern satnav systems redirect drivers to spread out traffic onto different road networks further helping to ease congestion and increase safety for everyone. Can you maybe look into the potential for equating the study of entropy into traffic flow? Perhaps a cost function could be created to simulate this. These are topics which I covered during my master's degree in advanced computer science. Finally, I think one minor hiccup in which I went off a roundabout at the wrong exit (safely, might I add) is a pretty good exchange for over 300 miles of more efficient and safer driving in one trip. All the best.
The missing phrase here is "pick the middle lane for that exit because the road markings allow it". Most people would go straight for the inside (right) lane.

Just been that roundabout myself today 😊
You can also use the right lane
This is in Southampton. They changed the layout after the new development. Both left and right lanes can be used to take the third exit (with the left lane becoming the middle lane). If you take the right (3rd) lane, you have to filter in turn to join lane 2. Between 4 and 5 PM, this roundabout becomes extremely busy and can back up to the M27. Most people taking the 3rd exit will use lane 2 rather than the almost empty lane 3. Unfortunately, as well as causing traffic problems, people in lane 2 get angry that people in lane 3 are "pushing in".
Thanks
Southampton baby!!!
Noooo I’ve done that on my test and failed for only this reason! My examiner marked it serious because he said on third exit if it’s past 12 o’clock you must always be on the lane with the right arrow only and to avoid the straight arrow lane/lanes because third in this case is on the right and I was so disappointed because my instructor told me to use that lane and he’s the reason I failed. My examiner told him that it’s a serious fault so be careful guys
In this case, 2 answers are correct. Either middle lane as the video then left lane at the third exit, or the right lane all of the way, as also facilitated by road markings.
I did this on a bicycle recently and it didn't stop an SUV undertaking me.
I drive this one every day just off 271 Southampton
It's going to Lordshell. I would have carried on going around rather than drive to the Wild West.
So many people cut across lanes here, live local and get through it all the time

Would you use the right lane?, always thought it was right hand lane if it’s that far right, the two cars passed you on the right and took the same exit
@geko7844
Жыл бұрын
It depends on the signs and markings. There’s so much information contained in our signs that even experienced drivers miss. That exit is at about 1 o clock. If it was a completely unmarked roundabout, you’d be correct to use the right lane. However, the sign and road arrows tell you that it’s treated as ‘straight over’ (even though it’s not really). If you look at the sign highlighted at the beginning of the video, you can see that the exit has a slightly bolder line drawn, along with a route number which matches the road they’re currently on - telling you it’s a continuation of the same road. This, along with the painted markings, means you can use either the centre or right lane. Keep an eye out on road signs - you’ll notice subtle little clues that help with your navigation. A big one which lots of people miss is the road sign colours and route numbers in brackets, telling you that the road you’re on will lead to that route.

On roundabouts where the lanes are marked with road numbers, you follow the road markings, just as you would do at any other time. It really is that simple. Why? Because everyone else is following those markings too and if you aren't then you are going to cause an accident. Logically you would manoeuvre, without inconveniencing other cars/drivers, into lane 3 (right-hand lane) on the approach to the roundabout for a right-hand turn on the roundabout (see the alignment on the sign). No, you don't "need to take the middle lane", as the right lane would be more usual for taking an exit top right as you approach.

I instantly fail my test yesterday because of this fault. when i took the left a big lorry behind me about to take the same left lane exit as me. Because i already indicate left i throught i can move over as soon as posible. The lorry driver about to crash into examiner side and almost end up dead fortunately he slammed the brake hard and manage to stop. So i carrird on. @@sxrge7349 Why would you need to signal right? You are NOT merging/turning right. You maintain your lane in the roundabout until you approach your exit. Then you signal left to exit. The only place where you might signal left/right is at the beginning where the lane splits-off. Maybe signal right to indicate you are choosing the right-split (middle lane). But, I feel it’s OPTIONAL because no one is effected by which lane you choose (no opposing traffic. No one effected to your right or left). I also think signaling right might confuse the person in the inner lane (merging into the inner lane?). The narrator also said “keep the middle lane” (implying no lane change). You could signal left if choosing to shift to left-split (outer-lane).

you need to start signalling right BEFORE the roundabout. As you pass exit 2, signal left to indicate you're exiting at exit 3. (tbh, in this particular example signalling left is not that necessary, as per the road markings you must leave at exit 3 anyway, but it's just good practice).

This requires some knowledge of the roundabout because id have assumed stick to the right.
On the minor road exit (first exit here) why design the exit with 2 lanes that immediately bottleneck. I always think this creates more risk than if it’s a single lane so you don’t get drivers that dont understand lane discipline go wrong and add the risk of the left lane continuing around to the next exit making an additional risk of a side impact. Road signs on where the principle is the double lanes allow you to continue on the “main road” should be much clearer. You could make the main road line much thicker as it’s not as clear as it could be. Non-main road exits can be much smaller.

Road markings say two lanes straight through, what’s the problem? Did that roundabout at least twice a week row three years.

Because you should always use the left hand lane when there are two marked lanes which you can take. The right lane is an overtaking lane and takes you on to the overtaking lane on the road exiting the roundabout. And the rules say you should always keep left unless overtaking. In times of heavy traffic then you might happen to be in the right hand lane approaching the roundabout in which case it is safer to stay in rhe same lane and not change. So technically you have been doing it wrong for years. Hope you learn now how you should drive across this roundabout.

Thi sight tells you where the exits are but only the road markings tell you how to get to them! The road markings that are way too close to the junction to give you enough time to safely get in lane (especially in heavy traffic!), or they are worn so the are unreadable or they are hiding under a stationary articulated lorry. I wish I could meet the person who signs off on this so called road planning, I’d happily punch them in the face repeatedly until they explain the logic. My driving instructor, back in 1990 told me that if I was unfamiliar with a roundabout then use the following rules, left hand lane to turn left or straight over and right hand lane to turn right!
