There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing 2 finger only definitely right. It just saves energy to use the 3rd finger but using exclusively index and middle and actually managing to maintain the same type of speed Cliff and Steve Harris did is very impressive and a great indicator that you have amazing endurance and technique.

Ok, I'm gonna embarrass myself. When I was a bored little kid, I used to drum my fingers in different fun patterns when I was bored. Then I picked up the bass. Then I realized what I had done for myself! I easily fell into the fastest bass lines because of those nerdy finger-drumming games I entertained myself with as a kid. I have never seen anyone play 3-fingers like this: In four, I play 3-1-2-1. I feel the downbeat in my 3rd finger, and the backbeat in my 2nd finger. In triplet, I play 3-1-2 1-2-1, using my index finger for the backbeat. In both of these patterns my index finger does most of the work, which feels natural to me, but I feel more strength in 3 for hitting the downbeats. It's almost like smacking someone on the head. I think it's because it uses the muscles that rotate the forearm as well as the finger flexors. (My forearm does rotate a bit on the downbeats. I play with a flat hand and straight fingers when I'm going for speed.) The heaviest hit (3) is always on the down beat, and it's really stable, though not as fast as the gallop or the Sheehan technique you show in the video. It's as fast as any 2-finger technique but with the workload more evenly distributed I think.

Filippo Goller Bro! (Or is it cuñado?) Wow, you are the first bassist I have ever heard of since I started playing 35 years ago who plays like that! It's an extremely versatile style (once you get the basic coordination down) that also lends itself to quick octave work (2 strings apart) and different patterns with the root, 5th, & octave by using one finger only per string.

Since I started as a classic guitar player, it helped me transfer three finger picking on bass guitar. Of course, when I first tried bass, I used two fingers and didn't use the third until I was able to play properly with two. The idea is in constant alternating of the fingers, no mater you play "straight" patterns or triplets. The pattern I use is very simple and it corresponds to a classical m - i - m - a, which is 2 - 1 - 2 - 3. If you have to start with another finger, the whole pattern remains the same, only the starting finger changes. E.g. 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 or 3 - 2 - 1 - 2.

Later I came across a video "Billy Sheehan's Secret trick" on KZread where Billy shows the technique with groups of four starting from each picking finger, it worked like a charm. I instantly grasped the what you call muscle memory for triplets. Other than that this video is fantastic. Thanks Mark, as always you have helped me quickly grasp another technique.

I think its worth mentioning that Cliff Burton did not always mimic the guitars. A good example would be Damage Inc. A lot of bass players seem to think he played the galloping triplets mimicking the guitars. In fact the bass line does not follow the guitar gallop at all and is far easier to finger pick.

Albert Tremblay If I want to play groupings of four I usually switch to 2 fingers or 4 fingers if I need to. You can always use the Billy Sheehan method of accenting different fingers on each pass but that's too much thinking for me! Alex Webster uses the same method. The weird thing about switching to 4 fingers is the order is always thumb, index, middle, ring. The opposite of the natural three finger tendency.

By hard im guessing you mean having the strength to play with three fingers for a long period of time. It is going to be difficult at first cause that is using a separate muscle in the forearm that has to be built if you have never played with three fingers. I do see that this comment is 2 years old so did you get it there?

Steve Harris uses 2 fingers (not counting thumb). I grew up trying to emulate his playing, so I started with 3. Years later I discovered that he only uses two. I still try to use all 4 (pinky, etc.) once in a while.

So I just listened to Cliffs isolated track from this album and here are my thoughts You have MUCH better technique than he did. Not a rip on him he was a kid in his early 20s and was playing with passion, fun and rocking out. If I was touring the world with Metallica back then, I probably wouldn't sit around perfecting my technique. It was also much more difficult to find teachers or instructional videos (VCR's were just starting to hit homes in considerable numbers when he died) without living in New York or attending a university with an amazing bass instructor. I doubt he was worried about nailing the guitar rhythms as cleanly as we are today. He probably had a few things he did for faster galloping riffs with his right hand, but hadn't really figured out how to isolate and practice this so he could do it without thinking about it. This is where his (sometimes) sloppiness comes in. I started out playing rock and metal as well, Metallica being my favorite band, and Cliff being my inspiration for playing that bass. (I'm almost 35 now to give you perspective on time frame) In my late teens I was introduced to jazz and all kinds of other wonderful music ( I think this is probably a common trajectory for many bassists?) and was introduced to Jaco and the like. While I don't idolize Cliff or Steve Harris like I did when I was 15, I still have a great appreciation for their contributions to bass playing and to music. There is a charisma and energy present in certain musicians that transcends genre and technique. Passion and Soul can be felt in 1 note, 10 sloppy notes or 10000 perfect notes. To me INSPIRING someone to play music is the greatest gift one musician can give to another. I didn't learn how to play Autumn Leaves from Cliff, but I would have never played Autumn Leaves were it not for him. Thanks for your videos. I'm taking time now to go back and work on a lot of the metal stuff I've neglected for 15 years :)

+Manny Hagman Hi Manny. Cliff Burton and a lot of famous rock/metal bass players aren't the best benchmark for bass technique. I love all those guys but it's more a case of loving the music, the sound and the attitude. You'll probably find a lot of Cliff Burton fans think of that as blasphemy but in terms of technique (if that's what you want) you have to look to more jazz oriented players. Hadrien Feraud, Janek Gwizdala, Matt Garrison and even older school guys like Jaco and Stanley Clarke are technically light years ahead of the majority of rock/metal players (and yes I include all the new prog metal guys). It's just a completely different set of requirements and most metal fans will probably HATE the music those guys create. I don't listen to music based on the technique of a bass player. People on KZread get really caught up in this competitive side of playing and think that one player is "better" than another based on some imaginary criteria. Often they get caught up in the 'speed' thing but speed is something you can develop very quickly. Many young players just don't realise and can't see beyond the next few months of playing. I actually don't think my "speed" has improved in the last 20 years of playing. I did a fair bit of practice on that side of things for the first 5 years but when I started music college is became pretty obvious that I needed to work on the actual important parts of bass playing. Speed should be incredibly low on your overall list of practice priorities.

  • @talkingbasslessons

Yes, Steve Harris plays with 2 fingers. I do a whole section in the video talking about that. In terms of alternated or raking, I'd say it depends on the line. I tend to alternate most of the time but if the fingerpicking pattern is likely to cause problems at some point with strict alternating I might rake a couple of notes to turn it round. In terms of fast runs, raking gives a different sound to alternating so it depends on what you're going for. I've noticed people tend to get bogged down in what technique is best or criticise people for using one technique over an other. The true answer at the end of the day is whichever or whatever technique provides the sound you're going for.

thats a good question. when i hear professional double thumbing it can sound like a steady flow of string 'popping'. i've never seen or been able to replicate that sound with fingers maybe unless the bass has super low string action
