On the final method (A+B) did you notice a difference in the output to the book shelf speakers? I was playing with A+B with two sets of speakers to compare them side by side and man did they both sound awful when A+B was selected. I presume because they were both demanding power, but assume hopefully that because a powered sub won't demand power the passive bookshelfs would sound the same in A+B as A alone.

I now have an active (self-powered) subwoofer hooked up to the B speaker outputs and the subwoofer and bookshelf units work, but the reciever is kicking off due to Protection mode, around volume 30. Is there anyway I can get prevent this or am I finding the limits of this reciever? Thanks.

First off, you will want to use a self-powered sub. Most of them have built-in volume and crossover seeings. You will want to set the subs volume and crossover level directly on it. I did not notice any impedance issues when running a self-powered sub with speakers.

You will want to connect the sub to both the R and L terminals of the speaker B output. Tape only loops sound through one of the 190's input that would not be very convenient.

I dont think there is an impedance switch on the DH190. I wouldn't think it would matter a while lot anyway. The receiver isn't actually powering the sub, its just sending it a signal so that it knows what frequencies to play.

Is there any sound degradation when using both the a & b speaker terminals at the same time? Yes you mentioned that you're only using the "B" terminal for the hi-level out signal for the subwoofer, but is there any noticeable degrade in sound output or quality?

  • @TheFrugalAudiophile

If you play speakers from both the A and B output you will lose some power and that can affect the sound. If you keep things pretty low it shouldn't make a huge difference, but as you go up in volume you will notice a difference. If you just play one set at a time there is no difference.

Theoretically, it could be done, but it would be difficult to get two sets of speaker wires in the terminals. You could could connect one sub to L speaker connector and one to R, but stereo bass really ins't desirable. Another options would be to connect one sub to the B speaker terminals and the other to your speaker. Of course then one sub would be on all the time -- which isn't a problem if you don't want to ability to turn it off.

Thanks, buddy!!! Here's my story" I went to the local Best Buy where I had bought my Sony receiver and ask a local electronic guru if I can connect a subwoofer to my amp and he started vehemently deny the very possibility of doing so, because it is a low class amp and it doesn't have a subwoofer outlet! What a moron! I didn't believe him in the first place and decided to doublecheck online. So that's how I found your video. In the nutshell, correct me if I wrong. I just go to Best Buy, purchase a Sony subwoofer for 200+ CAD, buy some wire, hook up a sub with a B set, while A set is being engaged by my two Polk shelf speakers and press A+B button on the remote and that's all I should do. If your TV has an RCA analog or headphone output you could directly connect it to the DH190. If not, as is the case with a lot of TVs, you will need a DAC with coaxial or optical input. It helped me to setup my sub with this receiver in under 10 min. And gave some extra info I wasn't even looking for and I learned a little bit.
