Threat of nuclear war in Europe | Peter Hitchens

''Are they actually going to use nuclear weapons against the Eastern attack, knowing that that will result in a nuclear retaliation and possibly the end of the world?’’
Peter Hitchens questions Poland’s ability to control nuclear weapons following president Andrzej Duda's announcement and reviews Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda bill.

Even the mention of nuclear war is insane, what on earth could be so serious to have to resort to using them is beyond me as both sides know full well they'd be no winner. Even the invasion of a nuclear powered nation should not resort to using them it would spell the end of humanity it's madness to even continplate using them.

Question: 'is nuclear sharing sensible' is sensible on its own. But as for making things worse than when the USSR collapsed, well we had Soviet nukes back then, spread across few Soviet bases on Polish territory. The difference is now there would be less of them, and we (nor Americans) are not the ones rattling the nuclear sabre, are we?

Simply because he manages to deliver his speeches in a sententiously combative manner in no way implies that which he drones on about is gospel. He's famous for it and considered good value for money when he's asked to make comments about "anything". Soviet nuclear weapons actually, Belarus and Kazakhstan gladly turned theirs over to Russia . The deal was Russia inherited Soviet foreign debt and assets along with the UN rights of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was to be neutral Russia and Ukraine pledged not to enter into alliances with the other envisaged as the enemy. Denuclearisation was the spirit of the times and independent Ukraine didn't have the codes nor control of the satellite system to launch them and after all who would be the anticipated enemy of Ukraine at the time? This broadly worked until 2014 and collapsed in 2022 .
