    Thrawn is three things - immensely intelligent, unquestionably cunning, and impeccably polite. It’s what sets him apart from many villains one sees in film and television. But at the same time, he is still exceedingly dangerous, and I’m wondering what will happen if and when one or more of the main characters underestimates him.

  • @mish375

    @@morbius109 Also something important about Thrawn is that he will do anything for the people he loves and wants to protect, yet at the same time is relentless and unforgiving towards his enemies. For instance, the lengths he went to save Eli's life when Palpatine wanted Eli dead, all because Eli reminded Thrawn of his brother, was something that Thrawn didn't have to do. But he cares deeply for his friends. And on a larger scale, he agreed to be fake exiled to try to save his people from death. Thrawn's just such a well written character.

    One thing I've always loved about Thrawn is that he has a sense of decorum and the intelligence to use it. Many an officer would have opened the channel to simply gloat; but Thrawn doesn't waste time. He congratulates his enemies on their efforts, but also informs them that he has achieved victory so they can stand down now. This is why Thrawn is one of my favourite characters in SW. He's complex and nuanced: exactly what Star Wars needs in a main antagonist. Also something really interesting during this chase scene: as they're leaving the planet, Thrawns eyes are glowing even more bright. But when he has achieved victory that glow dies down. In the old EU lore, Chiss eyes glowed in the presence of more oxygen - like the kind that would happen when you have more heightened emotions and there's more blood rushing to the face. Kind of a nice detail to show how stressful this was for him despite his stoic appearance.

    I love that "One wonders.... just how... similar you might become". He didn't just beat Ashoka and gloat about it, he's sowing seeds of mental anguish and trauma he can tap into should she somehow defy all probable outcomes and oppose him later (as Jedi tend to dom in his experience). Grand Admiral Thrawn knows her master, knows his fate, and because he makes a habit of studying his enemies in their totality, knows what falling to the Dark Side means to a Jedi. "Perhaps this is where a Ronin such as yourself belongs" is also in service of this effort; as if to say "You gave it an honorable try; stay here now, give up. Your master let war consume him, you can still choose peace, and thereby save yourself from the Dark Side." He's also so damned respectful, despite dropping that landmine -- calls her by her full name, acknowledges she played the game well, even says 'please' to the communications droid. I'm sorry to say it, but Thrawn is someone it's hard to root against, much as I like the protagonists. He's just such a high-value person in all aspects of his bearing, you can't help but respect him.

  • @mish375

    @mish375

    The Thrawn books make it all but impossible for you to see him as a villain. He's simply a leader on the other side of a war, desperate to save his people and the over-arching galaxy from a far worse threat using the Empire's resources. By the time you get to the part where Thrawn chooses to give up everything and be voluntarily exiled, just so he can join the Empire to give the Chiss a chance to win the war, you view the conversation he had with Sabine in a different light. Gambling the fate of the galaxy on that belief? Unlike what Sabine thinks, Thrawn understands where she's coming from far more than she knows.

    Best exit I've seen in television. Hyped up because we get to finally see thrawn in live action, angry that he got away, goosebumps with the "long live the empire" and the engines firing up, and intrigued at what's going to happen next. The safe bet is to assume that the good guys will win, cuz they always do. But with star wars, dave filoni, and especially thrawn, it is completely possible that the bad guys could win this one. The writing was done so well, it could go in 30 different directions and no one can predict where it's going. Best way to end a season.

    For a moment, i thought the hyperspacr ring was gonna fail because Ezra somehow managed to deactivate it right as Thrawn said "Long live the empire" But then i realized that wouldnt have been possible for him to do aboard the Star Destroyer. It wouldve had to be done on the hyperspace ring itself. Still, the sound effects you hear when he drops that line is very reminiscent to when the Falcon fails to jump in Empire.

    Imagine the apprentice of Anakin Skywalker being a very real actual threat to your plans, and despite all odds, you "defeat" her, make it out of your exile and literally conquer extragalactic travel, only to return to find out that the son of Anakin Skywalker was involved in not only the destruction of one, but two Death Stars, the death of the Emperor, and the death of Darth Vader. Because unless I'm mistaken, as far as Thrawn knows, he's under the impression that he's returning to a galaxy with a functioning empire still in it.

    Damn! The "you were quite a worthy opponent" is such a compliment coming from Thrawn. The reason Thrawn is so terrifying is cause he doesn't underestimate his opponent (unlike most arrogant Sith and Imperials), and always has multiple plans in play. It's literally the main reason he won this encounter, cause he was able to manipulate Ahsoka's movements while avoiding a direct head to head fight (Even sacrificing Morgan Elsbeth, who was one of his more powerful pieces).

    In the original Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn, the Grand Admiral conquers a planet through deceptive strategy and immediately has a conversation with the planet's ruler accepting surrender. Thrawn is consistently polite, with no gloating and reassures the ruler that as long as the population don't interfere with Imperial activity they'll be allowed to self govern, with no forced conscription or other interference in their internal affairs. Thrawn clearly understood that making enemies unnecessarily would only make his own life harder. An Empire under Thrawn would have been a multinational police force governed by a professional code of conduct, not the totalitarian nightmare of Palpatine and Vader where citizens turned to armed resistance out of loathing.
