Thousands protest in Russia: What does this mean for Putin and Russian politics? | DW News

In Russia, dozens of protesters have been arrested after clashes with riot police in the central region of Bashkortostan.
Thousands of people demonstrated in the town of Baymak after an environmental activist was sentenced to four years in prison for allegedly inciting hatred.
Police used force and tear gas to disperse protesters and several people were injured.
According to Russia’s strict anti-demonstration laws, protesters found guilty of so-called "mass-rioting" could face up to 15 years in prison.

    RF and democratic are opposite terms. Actually Russia up to now has never known a kind of democratic government, and de-facto one dictator was swapped by another one. Even M Gorbachev was a dictator, maybe with the face to humanity, but his was not a democratic political person. So, why do you expect democratic approach from dictator's regime?

Just wondering what news reaches other countries.

    @@christineblaszczyk1602 Hello! I don’t think there will be deaths from the cold: there are field kitchens, warm tents, many have gone to their relatives or to hotels. The biggest problem is something else: after “perestroika” in the early 90s, many communal facilities were bought “through acquaintances” and were not repaired. so now we live on the legacy of the “great ancestors of the USSR”. and it seems the legacy can no longer stand. and, of course, it is unclear what residents of flooded houses should do: many houses are simply uninhabitable for the next six months, or even at all. in some places the authorities are offering new housing. but, of course, this is not a “desired” move.

    If Putin loses control of the hinterlands it will mean more than you think; most of those "hundreds of thousands of policemen" are in the west of Russia or deployed in Ukraine. If the natives in the east turn against him he won't be able to draft them into the military and he will either have to give up Ukraine or start drafting more from the west and upset wealthier, more influential families, which for him is a no-win scenario.

    @LeonardTavast the other issue that could develop depends on how much Putin relies on these areas, and there is more than one of them, for recruitment to fight in Ukraine? This could potentially squeeze his constant need for fresh troops, and that won't go over very well if regular Russians are going to have to make up any shortages.

  • @lif6737

    @lif6737

    That depends. One revolt he can handle, but the threat comes from a cascade effect. If protests surge in one area and simultaneously inspire others, Putin might struggle to suppress them, thereby encouraging more protests and thereby harming his capacity to repress them, and so on
