Iraq - Kurdish resistance to Iran's regime | DW Documentary

Small groups of Kurdish men and women from Iran are camped out in the mountains of Iraq. The exiles have joined armed resistance units and are determined to fight the Iranian regime.
The documentary follows the fate of Kurds who have taken to the mountains over the Iraqi border after fleeing Iran. Some belong to the Kurdistan Democratic Party in Iran. Targeted by Iranian rocket and drone attacks, the armed groups hide out in secret camps. Iran’s high-tech surveillance systems also make it extremely difficult to stay in touch with their relatives back home. Some of the resistance fighters played a leading role in the protest movement sparked by the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. The young Kurdish woman died after being detained by Iran’s so-called morality police for allegedly breaching the country’s mandatory hijab laws for women. Last year, Tehran issued the Iraqi government in Baghdad with an ultimatum, setting them a deadline to disarm Kurdish opposition groups and relocate them from the border. But some refuse to leave.
[Editor's Note: On 16 January 2024, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for a ballistic missile attack on the northern Iraqi city of Erbil. At least four people were killed in the strike. In a statement released later the Revolutionary Guards said they had carried out the attack on Israeli “spy headquarters”. Local authorities have condemned the strike and dismissed the claims as baseless. For more information visit: p.dw.com/p/4bHjt and www.dw.com/en/middle-east/s-1... ]

I live in Kurdistan Region northern Iraq. I came here 5 years ago. I had never heard of Kurdistan before my travel and knew nothing about the Kurds. Today, with pride, I shout to the world that Kurdish people are the best people you can ever mingle with. The diversity and inclusion with tolerance makes it one of the most complex yet very friendly humans I've met in my entire life. With so many friends already, I am still making more and no matter what, except otherwise according to residence law, I don't see myself ever leaving this land till I retire. Long live Kurdistan...long live the Kurds

I have met many Iranian Kurds in person in Iran who identify themselves as Iranian. They are very proud of Iran history and Iran golden age like when Pahlavi Dynasty ruled Iran. There might be a few separatist here and I have only seen or heard of them online or in documentaries. These separatists do not represent all the Kurds of Iran. During Iran-Iraq war Iran lost about 1 million young soldiers to prevent Iran from losing 1 centimeter of its territory. Those soldiers were from many Iranian ethnic groups and their only goal was to defend Iran and avoid losing territory. Many Iranian Arabs fought against Iraqi Arabs and Saddam Hussein to defend Iran and died of chemical weapons. Just go and ask any Iranian whether they want a part of their country to be separated and see their angry reaction. More than 90% would say a big NO. Now you use bunch of cute words like respect them or respect me bla bla bla but they mean 💩

Remember this is A German program which is heavily pro Kurds so, I would hold on making an opinion untill you really read all side's version of the story. Usually, the truth lies in the middle. NOT every minority in the world is entitled to have its own country!!!. Otherwise the world will be about five hundred countries now and rages with ethnic wars. Two or three Ethnic groups can live and coexist in one country!!!

the problem is that at least me, as an allies of Turkiye...I cant be advocating for claims on their territories. even tho, I totaly respect Kurdish and their need for a state. but claiming part of Turkiye is a problem if you they want widespread support from NATO countries. I mean, there has to be some talk with Turkiye maybe...I dont know...because apart from territorial disputes, Kurdish and Turks seems like best allies to me 😂

The model of the current government, to try to connect people by force instead of culture, is incredibly destructive. They have done more damage to the greater Iranian family than any outsider could ever dream of doing. When a big goal of the Iranian government is to "export the Revolution", of course the neighboring countries are going to watch their people who have ethnic ties to Iranians. The current Iranian government (and to some extent, the popular culture) acts like an abusive partner who does not let someone break up. You can see it online when many of them call Azerbaijanis "fake Turks" and describe their dreams of taking over Baku. This just makes the people in places like there even more resistant to thinking about connections they often have.

"Iraq - Kurdish Resistance to Iran's Regime | DW Documentary" is an extraordinary documentary that not only highlights the resilience and determination of the Kurdish people in their struggle against Iran's regime but also emphasizes the pivotal and constructive role of Kurdish women in this struggle. The documentary artfully showcases how Kurdish women have been at the forefront, breaking traditional gender roles and contributing significantly to their community's fight for autonomy and justice. Their bravery and leadership are a source of inspiration, illustrating the vital role women play in shaping the course of political and social movements. This film serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and courage of Kurdish women, whose unwavering spirit and commitment have been instrumental in their people's ongoing quest for freedom. It's truly heartening to witness their immense contribution, and I extend my heartfelt admiration and best wishes to the Kurdish people, particularly the women, in their noble pursuit of liberty and self-determination.
