Thousands Of Uni Students’ Degrees In Chaos | Good Morning Britain
Ойын-сауық
Thousands of Uni students will be left in limbo this summer when they leave university without knowing whether they will get a 1st, 2:1 or 2:2. The University and Colleges Union (UCU) have boycotted the marking of final assessments and dissertations at 145 Universities leaving many students questioning how they can get their first job to start paying off their huge debts if they don’t know their grade. Thousands of students have signed open letters in campaign called #SettleTheDispute urging the university to go back to the negotiating table with the union. The UCU are taking action over issues of pay, workload and equality and intend to ballot over strike action in the Autumn. Last week thousands of University students asked London's High Court to give the go-ahead to a mass lawsuit against University College London (UCL) over disruption to their studies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and strikes. More than 3,000 current and former students - who paid at least 9,250 pounds a year - are suing UCL for breach of contract, in a case which could be followed by similar litigation against other British universities.

My son, a third-year student, stands to lose out yet again. First, when he took is A-levels, having been sent home unceremoniously due to COVID and having his mock results declared as his A-level results. He, like so many third year students was also not able to have a meaningful and enjoyable university experience, again due to COVID, and now this. What a mess!
Im in this position right now. Can't even begin to tell you how stressful it is for us students. Hours and hours of work for absolutely nothing. It's the most anxious I've been in a while.

I am in this position too, 4 years of hard work and now with £72,000 in debt with no idea if I am going to get a proper degree classification and plus my uni life ruined by the COVID-19 pandemic and the COVID-19 restrictions, makes you think whether getting a degree was worth it? Obviously lecturers should get properly paid, but this is not the way.
What a disgrace… how could they live with themselves. The students should sue those involved

How's he comparing it to A&E work? What a joke. The papers will eventually be marked. Not the lecturers' fault - start treating workers properly.

The point is they will be marked in October. So for some students they won't get any grade until later in the end when maybe they should have finished in July. It's not their fault is it! They didn't ask thr unis not to pay the lecturers right. They should have their work marked. I agree the government should get around the table and work with the unions to get a deal.

You realise it’s holding back thousands of peoples entries onto Masters/into jobs requiring proof of qualification/updating their visa if international students etc. its not just oh we have to wait a bit longer its fucking over the students who have ALWAYS supported strikes and now when it matters most we are being left out to dry. As horrible as it is to say, at least staff have their accolades and experience behind them to seek new employment if the uni does not provide enough, undergraduates with no degree and minimum job experience due to COVID and full time degree to complete are screwed.

How about paying everyone fairly in every sector and we would end these disruptions, the government is more worried about their donors than to confront these issues.
Education in most UK universities even the well reputed ones is a dreadful rip off. Hardly any classes, endless "reading weeks" and very little or no supervision. Also the overhanging risk of strike or colleges/ courses going bankrupt.
I agree with the Professor and I’m also a university student. My lecturers are visibly exhausted. BUT I also think they should mark students work when able.

I think your missing the point of why they do this. The senior management in universities always use the students as a stick to beat lecturers with, meanwhile they’re on 6 figure salaries expecting lecturers to work unpaid additional hours, doing 9 month rolling contracts with no guarantees of a job next September, and pay that isn’t increasing at any meaningful rate for two decades now. The only way to hurt the seniors is unfortunately through the students. If students make more of a stand for lecturers, it would massively help.
@lucieirl

@@wr9209 massively disagree. Students should not have their future prospects being held ransom by the very lecturers they supported continuously through Covid and some of the biggest strikes in recent years. As much as I respect and have a good relationship with my lecturers I can’t help but feel it was for nothing now and that my cohort (final years) have been unwilling forced to say they still support the boycott even when it’s now actively fucking us and our post graduate jobs courses plans etc :/
It is a shame that the final year students in particular are affected. Hope the situation gets sorted out.

Students pay universities to provide education to a specific standard, included in that is an expectation of assessment & grading that will better enable them to find future employment. Universities themselves have raced towards charging maximum fees…theyARE now COMMERCIAL providers. Surely by NOT providing that marking ( or delaying so as to damage employment opportunities) there is a breach of contract? Can students sue in this instance?

Had my degree for 12 years and it has never benefitted me
Hope they get refund on tuition fees paying for service don't get...
Once I can't have my time back at least give my money back. No teaching, no support and now marking assessment boycott. Splashing £9250 in tuition fee what for? I'm charity person but I'll like to decide when and to who I donate. And this criminals are definitely not on my list. What a mockery !
Why punish the students after all we're paying their bills. Shameful!
Did they ask someone from the uni to make a statement? Missing in the conversation is the university's point of view.
As an academic in a “highly-rated” HE institution who doesn’t agree with all this mess, my sincere advice to students planning to go to uni this September is: don’t waste your time and your money, look for an alternative plan. A gap year, or even a second gap year, will be more fruitful than what you will get from college.
I bet the student loans company are getting thousands of calls asking what happens to their debt if they die. Talk to your family guys. Thankfully your debts are never passed onto them! 30% of degrees should be axed!!
This is NOT like a Hospital A&E boycott!!! 😆 So ridiculous, the degrees WILL be marked, just a few months late - you don't recover from a fatal accident when you get treatment a few months after a strike! 🤔 As much of a pain as it is, and very disruptive for some, the student's futures and careers have NOT been ruined, no more than train or postal strikes that effect people's lives & jobs.
@eloise2470
11 ай бұрын
Very bold claim that students futures aren't being jeopardised, students are losing job offers and postgraduate opportunities thanks to this ongoing boycott. Universities aren't giving any feasible time frame in which work will be marked and degrees will be handed out. We are looking at potentially graduating a year late. This is not a trivial complaint but a situation that makes a mockery of our country's so-called 'world-renowned' higher education system.

got to admit it bugs me that academics make so much of a fuss when everyone forgets about the professional service staff. To be fair academics aren't paid as much as they used to be (in real terms) and there is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes students don't see. But the real issue is professional services, often the 'forgotten group' again because no one sees them but a lot wouldn't happen without them. Loads of universities are making these staff redundant because they cannot afford to pay them. This is admissions staff, student support, school staff (that dot he admin for these things), on average, there's about 2000 staff members that work behind the scenes. But they can't strike a lot of the time. Unfortunately, tuition fees need to go up, I know it sounds horrible, but universities won't run and have the services people need/ want without them. Academics kinda need to pipe down as well, I think they will find it hard holding a discussion with an admissions officer that handles thousands of applications and is on £22k about how they on £50k are underpaid :/
