    Honestly, just glad to hear some cautiously optimistic takes on the changes. I've been playing MNK since ARR 2.0 launch, and as always I don't intend to judge the class changes until I see numbers and get my hands on the release. Thanks for spending some time talking about it!

    I also have been a MNK main since 2.0. This looks pretty close to the HW style, which I loved. It's still a priority combo system, and I bet buff windows will change which combo is optimal. I'm all on board with this.

    Yeah, with every expac change to jobs, not just monk, one has to just get in there hands-on and git gud. Then the devs will make minor tweaks, then things will feel stabilized... Then people will stop sobbing... Until the next expac. lol the circle of FFXIV life. 😅

    ​@@midnighttornado22 MNK is the most reworked job in the game bro, even patches in old expansions it would receive a rework. End Walker was a happy medium for most, so of course most MNK players are gonna be upset/worried.

    Honestly, either these changes are going to be overall good with maybe 1 or 2 good quirks that allow for optimizers to cry tears of happiness, or overall bad changes that’ll make me wait for 8.0. All that truly needed changes was Anatman and SSS, and you had an almost perfect job, now they got us being anxious for 2 months to see if they either cooked or burned the whole building down.

    I played monk very casually pre EW, maybe hopping in ex or savage once or twice in ShB. I ended up playing monk a bunch, for TEA prog, TOP prog, and a little bit of DSR prog. I loved following your spreadsheet stuff for TOP phases with figuring out optimal rotations till my clear in 6.4, though I never tried run dynamis evil mode or anything after getting the reclears I wanted. The reason I feel kinda bummed about a rework is that it feels like SE wants to remove any unique and weird optimizations for fights in favor of a very smooth experience.

    Been playing since ARR Beta, and new to hard content as of Endwalker. Have loved MNK the entire time. I share a lot of the same takes. Cautious optimism, and now just trying to build out the rotation in my head. As my friends put it; they watched my copium turn to hopium once I actually figured out how the changes worked and that MNK's core style is still intact. Same style, just...different flow.

    ikr. They almost added a builder/spender element to the filler. Now we will be optimizing the buildup to the burst so we don't overcap stuff. Already dabbling in a theoretical spreadsheet seems interesting. Monk mains will always be monk mains. Or playfield a the googledoc 😂😂

    I've been the whole of Endwalker thinking that monk was really cool, but yeah, keeping track of the timers was (one of the things) keeping me from really giving the job a go. I think moving the timers to a gauge is definitely going to make the job more accesible and I'm kind of excited to try it now.

    Honestly I think I find the style of "Make sure your next GCD has the potency increase" more fun than make sure buff is up and you have dot. As now we have 123 456 156 426 153 456 126 456 153 426 and it flows from there.

    @@amethist6774 it's basically the same but you have 1 more true strike/snap before you must use the corresponding buff action I imagine they will make the potencies such that you do bootshine/dragon kicks for lunar, but we won't have any idea until we see potencies.

    I love these changes. Finally we get some new skills/animations for some of the core 6 abilities. Which have had the same (and now heavily outdated) animations since 2.0!! Fucking FINALLY!

    I like monk but a problem I have always had is the difficulty with keeping the buffs, debuffs, and gauge that you need to keep track of in the same area. It feels like you have to look at three different places at the the same time right now. These changes at least seem to help by directing your attention to one general area.

    I think the strong reaction to loosing timers is natural, MNK brain is basically wired around them at this point, but after reading a bit and watching this video I can sort of see the vision and I think it could be interesting too. I'm curious about the activation on Riddle of Earth and the Six Star interaction, can't wait until we have some skill descriptions. Thanks for the video btw.

    Great video! As a Beta monk player myself they scare me anytime they change monk so my first reaction was not good lol. But hopefully the tooltips/playing will still have monk be one of the best jobs in the game.

    I think it will be interesting how we will enter in riddle of fire windows. Assuming, for example, snap punch potency higher than demolish, when riddle of fire is coming up and, let's say, we have one sphere remaining will it be better to use demolish (and doing that overcap spheres and lose a snap punch use) in order to have snap punch in buff window, or will it be better to use snap punch not overcapping but having a low potency demolish in buff window? I think optimization will be different, maybe a little simpler, but interesting.

    But isn't demolish a dot or they're removing that too ? If it's still a dot, I believe it's full potency is higher than snap punch. So using snap punch in ROF is still optimal.

    Thank you PB! Been learning from you since I started SHB monk. Rotation is going to feel different for sure. Rip Optimal drift but no overcap now is amazing. I think in terms of utility, the change to Chakra usage for Six sided star is Great! While overlooking the long recast timer, To my understanding, monk didn’t have a way to use 1-4 chakra balls. I could be wrong. I’m assuming we not only can buff SSS but we don’t have that annoying feeling of wasted chakra by the end of a fight. Having 1 crit away from doing another Forbidden chakra as the boss died. It’s small change but the change is very thoughtful.

    I just started learning MNK in a Legacy Ultimate and am having a great time with it. It's genuinely a lot of fun even though I'm not optimised at all. But I must admit: breaking up my buffs from my conditional buffs, changing settings so that only my debuffs show up and are prioritised, moving my UI around to make all these different timers take up the same eye space, learning the different RoF placements etc is just entirely too much just to get my foot in the door. Perhaps it's selfish, but this is a welcome change that keeps the fluid uses of your 1-6 buttons while also displaying that information in one organised place. I don't feel like the MNK identity has been lost at all.

    FINALLY a fellow day one monk main!! I like your input and if we’re just getting leaden fists on a 1 2 3, then if you think about it, I wouldn’t think your core rotation would change much innit? I mean, at least mine wouldn’t by much I believe. REALLY just looking forward to getting my hands on and testing these changes out and would like to talk more on it down the line.

    I am not really a fan of the swipes. The little hover for a second like we're Yoshi mixed with a cat gently scratching the foe's skin feels weightless/low impact to me. I'd prefer they just look at animations Tifa, Chun-Li, Ryu, or Kiryu have and pull from those instead of going "Woah, what if we had Monk attack like... a pissed off dwarf cat while in Coeurl stance?" or something along those lines. The rest of the animations feel neat, but I just don't like that one. Little scratches feel weird too when you consider most of MNK's weapons are big blocks attached to your fists or tonfas. Maybe this is not a popular opinion but yeah ^ ^; the more I watch this one move the less I like it lol.

    @LemonCreature if speaking of fgc characters, they could be like Devil Jin from Tekken's claw attacks, if a good soul makes an edgy Devil Jin mod for Mnk someday with the new stuff we have with Mnk, using Drk and Rpr effects + hopefully some red lightning for the sweet Electric fists (maybe modded TFC or Rising Raptor / True Strike? copium)

    I honestly struggled with Optimal Drift, the one burst window where you preemptively needed to PB that is. I still managed savage which I was happy with. I am looking forward to the changes maybe making it simpler in that regard. And just the whole new abilities seem very fun. I am currently looking into healing in DT but if that doesnt work out or is not fun I will surely play MNK again like I did when I started (though that was in EW).

    Ive been casually playing since a broken begging beta. I have always loved the monk job but I am horrible at keeping track of timers and maintaining buffs. I had rotation down but would always forget if I was on my first or second sp and would end up messing up. This change looks really good to me. But I can see how some of the better players arent happy. We will have to see how it all plays out.

    I'm pessimistic tbh. Did all hard content (except TOP) as monk in EW and optimal drift was a big part of my enjoyment. Both of learning it and then optimizing it in fights. We'll see how the potencies look and if there is any sort of interesting side effects spawning from those. (Please mess it up SE and let there be some way to make our buff windows semi-interesting to enter).

    I've been playing main monk since mid HW, also survived the first ultimates releases with monk (ptsd kicks in) the class has had so many changes some were good and some were “cursed” but for the most part it's personal preference. I like that the Punchy Punchy class has been made more accessible to beginners without the stress of maintaining the buff and dot (easy to learn, hard to master) and after so many years of playing the same basic combo (I'm looking at you shb, you combo breaker

    Also a fellow monk main since beta, *high five* I’m curious how AoE GCDs will be changed as well. I’m assuming they build the form gauge but only the new single target GCDs will actually consume them. If anatman is not finally axed I have a feeling it will build the form gauge, otherwise it does literally nothing now. Curiously I noticed the enhanced GCDs weren’t granting automatic chakra during brotherhood window, so maybe the enhanced BH trait getting some changes. I’m overall optimistic in the end. They gut the positionals yet I still play the job like it has 6. I’m sure there will be some room of optimization to be had in place of optimal drift to retain some form of skill expression. Finally, if Elixir field is neutral against Rising Phoenix, guess there won’t be a reason to have double solar opener depending on how updated potencies work out.

If that ends up being the case it’s a bit of an odd case to go 1-80 range with one set of opener options, then change at 90, then change again at 100. Not that Monk wouldn’t already be alone in this circumstance, nor I guess is it a prevalent concern in the grand scheme of things I suppose.

    MNK main here - i'm optimistic. i see new ways to start a solar now. less frustration when the boss goes away for 20 seconds. the core combos will be more complex.

    I did some math, and i don't think it's ever going to be a gain to lose uses of true strike/snap Because you are essentially pushing the difference between the two actions into burst at the cost of the difference between those actions in potency, one reset would need to align a proportional number of extra uses into buffs with the % damage gained i.e 4 uses of true strike into buffs with 25% damage increase, 2 at 50%, etc. I mean, i didn't see it work out. Correct me if I'm wrong? If I'm right, this basically enforces the drifting rotation directly, and the actual gcd loop is much longer in the first place.

    It definitely looked like SSS just consumes whatever chakra you have (1 chakra in the trailer). They probably just add 1/5 of your chakra spender's potency to SSS per chakra consumed.

    I personaly really like the current monk, has been my main since the second tier, with time i honestly learned to like the complexity of tracking the buffs and dots and when i heard the changes i didnt like it at first, but also at the same time the dot/buff having such a low duration, i think that it makes adding new things to monk a bit harder, like in the current rotation if you were to add new gcds(which iam assuming that riddle of wind or at least the riddle of fire follow up is gonna be instead of ogcds) you would kind of break the flow of mainting the buff/dot, they would have to change timings, make those new skills extend the dot or buff duration or get rid of it entirely. I wanna be optimistic but iam kinda worried i wont like the changes much, but its certainly gonna be fun to at least try it out at lv100.

    SHB monk with the positionals was pretty fun and EW monk was so interesting to optimize, having to manage timers with both was an engaging part of the job and I'm kinda devastated that they went to dumb it down this bad...

    @@PerfectBalanceIsntDead You say interesting...I say annoying. Get rid of the stance mechanic as it is and make them ACTUAL stances in martial arts. A stance you take and all your attacks come from it. You want to change stance? You have to consciously do it not passively as you attack. Stances should be passives you toggle to fit a situation. Make the attacks flow like dragoon's or reaper's. People will stop memeing on it finally. It is not fun how it is now. Anyone who think it is fun now, you are coping...you aren't actually enjoying it. Basically like how summoners felt forever. They all loved their job then their summons stopped requiring heals and they became instant cast nukers and suddenly they all REALLY loved their job so much more in spite of how much they insisted they loved looking after the pet. Monks need to be weaned off their cope. Everyone I know of that enjoys monk...enjoys it because they get to punch things...not because of the rotation.

    Played monk since ARR, and its been a lot of love hate changes so I'm sure this will be the same. I'm mostly optimistic to have something much newer/different after ShB and EW changes. This will def do what the devs wanted, and allow non monks to get into the job more. I think expanding on monk in 8.0 and beyond will be more interesting with this as a jumping off point than what we've had with timer management.

    i love the idea that at the end you are like hey everyones doomposting but at least monk is getting some kind of discussion HAHAHA. My fave monk has been tornado kick era but i also really enjoyed learning optimal drift as an alt job because i changed mains during the anatman era but im not gonna despaige until we see the full details from the media tour. Every expansion has had doom and gloom around a job that ended up not being that bad

    As for someone who likes some level of optimization and skill performance, the loss of timers kind of ruins half the reason why i enjoy the job. Apart from its form system, the job having timer management really made it very interesting to play, especially when applied to burst windows. However, it now looks a lot more risged in how you'd play it which is the opposite of why I got into the job.

    My first impression watching the slides live was that monk was gonna be the new summoner...that they were going to remove things without adding any complexity, I sat on my thoughts as the livestream went on, and realized that there's still a chance the job could be fun for me. I enjoyed both the Shadowbringers Mid patch rework and mained Monk throughout Endwalker...just need to see how rotations things work before making up my mind.

    The changes to a more "static" rotation has me tempted to leave Dragoon for Monk. Monk looks super fun to play now. The constant timers and drift is the one thing that turned me off from the job. May just be my braindead Dragoon rotation muscle memory speaking, though.

    Its funny I am a SHB player but always played monk and liked GL monk but I didn't like how twin snake and Demolish had different timers and had hard time keeping twin up maybe it's because I am a casual Monk but still I love monk and its lore very much I which is why I am happy with new Monk since it keeps monk main identity which is switching and flowing through forms and giving it a new fresh take my main problem was looking at three different places for a buff, debuff and positional and chakra and blitz for new monk making it more exhausting looking more at the all the bars than the boss

    Thank you for a level-headed look at these changes. As someone that has only ever really played monk for fun, it has always been a bit overwhelming to just jump into. Like all job changes, there is only so much we can glean from these previous, and even these may end up drastically different. Great conversation around it either way.

    I don't think the changes will have a huge impact on the rotation overall but the reasoning behind them kind of confuses me They could have just as easily added a gauge to more easily keep track of twin snakes and demolish if they didn't want you to have to stare at the buff/debuff bar

    I'm just glad some are taking a less "omg it's SMN now, stance", I just think people need to breathe, wait until the tooltips are out and we try it, get the entire picture of what they're going for and then voice complaints. I get not liking it but some people are really acting like they said MNK gets a healer DPS rotation now.

    Much like with the new perfect balance changes in endwalker, we may be p[leasantly surprised with the changes here come full release. I think your take in this video is probably the most sane one, but I get the camp of people freaking out in the lounge too. dragon kickers won this round we'll get em next time (it will continue to get simpler)

    I've only every played on controller very briefly a few years ago when a raid tier dropped when I wasn't able to get to my PC so I was playing on PS4 for a few days, so I'm not the most experienced with controller. I think everyone should give it til at least the media tour and we see tool tips and impressions before people start bringing out the pitch forks, and even then it’s ultimately your own experience that will tell you if you like the changes or hate them.

    I am super excited for the changes. We 100% needed some of these changes. It was the only way I was going to keep playing this job after they took all my favorite positionals and the stance system away. The stances and the positionals + greased lightning vfx are part of why I originally fell in love with the job and them being gone has had me huffing copium lol. The light and dark chakra gauge plus the new gauge changes are definitely going to make this more interesting. And the chakra overcap changes really make me happy

    So, I've always disliked melee, but I hated MNK the most. When the DT PLL came out, I decided to try MNK so that I can compare it with the new MNK when 7.0 comes out. And. It's so much more enjoyable than I ever thought! But I have to flick my eyes to the enhancements bar (and the debuff bar for demolish) because it isn't intuitive to me and "counting ratios" was too cumbersome. The new gauge makes it so much more convenient for me (and my eyes, man I was straining with all that flicking up and down!) and I'm excited for it! My opinion doesn't matter as much as a MNK lifer's, of course, but the approachability of the job will definitely be better come DT.

    I think the change to the combo system is genius it keeps the flow of how we are used to play but makes the rotation more accessible to new players. The new system also allows them to add new gcds like the riddle of wind and fire attacks without destroying the rotation. Not to mention there might be new weird ways of optimization now.

    I honesty like a lot of the changes. I still prefer Optimal Drift but I understand how daunting it is for newer players to learn and master that rotation. I still think the job will be just as involved, but in a different way.

    My initial takeaway when I skimmed over the changes at work was that they weren't particularly harmful, like I did enjoy what Endwalker did to MNK and Dawntrail isn't changing it 'much'. However, what i'm exhausted by now is just how many times this job is going to radically change, even when they intend to 'keep the feel of the job largely the same', they still do this crap where they remove a core component of MNK that has been with it for YEARS. I only started in 4.5, literally the end of SB and learned and loved SB MNK and the TK Rotation in time for it to change in Shadowbringers, only for it to completely change in Endwalker, currently the MNK I'm playing is not the MNK I started playing when I began FFXIV, and I started at the very end of SB, so I can't tell how much worse this must be for someone who played it even earlier. I'll still probably enjoy MNK in Dawntrail, but at the same time I'm genuinely thinking of switching my main job to something else because the constant reworking has removed and replaced a lot of what I initially loved about MNK.

    Glad to hear some smart veteran monk opinions 👍 I like current 😌 but the changes and new gauge seem great. I've defo not been a fan of how tight Twin Snakes and Demo times have been. Glad they not a consideration anymore. 🎉

    Bruh after getting comfortable with mnk and understanding optimal drift they change things again lol. I can see why people are upset with the changes initially I wasn't a fan of the twin snake and demolish removal but we shall see how things play.

    my only worry is if monk loses speed. my only reason for liking monk is because of the 1.9x skillspeed and the buff and dot timers since it keeps my brain working all the time. i can never play 2.5cd jobs anymore it feels like an eternity. the job is getting more streamlined and easy ..... so ,if it does lose speed its a great opportunity to try viper out i guess.

    Monk is a lot of fun and the changes don’t really look bad gameplay wise but style wise I’m not a fan of the cat scratching attacks or the fireball type mage stuff from monk lol

    GCD rotation is f*cked and monk became more complicated. If before it was like first two steps were as a muscle memory "combo", because skills on 1 and 2 steps were one after another, so now second step has 1-1-2 sequence.

    Just got back to the game after about 2 years. Finding out most positionals were removed made picking Monk back up much easier. Now with this change of moving the timers to a gauge I think it should make getting into Monk a lot simpler.

    Dots are on the way out of FFXIV, so many classes have lost them and I don't doubt Dragoon will lose theirs too. Tracking them without addons is a nightmare and the ingame UI just wasn't good enough. So removing them is the simpler option, easier for newer players and less second guessing when you should dot or not.

    Feeling a cautious 8 to a strong 7.5 on this one. Greed holding chakra during a burst to maximize sss and then blasting out the flip-over riddle skills sounds good in my mind at least and I'm not dreading it which is more than I can say for previous iterations.

    Leave it to Perfect Balance to give us a take that is perfectly balanced. This whole situation reminds of the launch of EW, and how ppl reacted to the positional changes, yet optimal drift was super fun. Monk players are gonna overreact sometimes, me included haha

    I'm not going to just stop playing mnk unless it really feels terrible, but I'm not super optimistic. More than anything it just feels like a continuation of them removing all the things that made it feel unique compared to other jobs. Not saying all of those were good and needed to stay but like, just keep some of them. I don't care if other people don't want to pick the job up there are so many options not every job needs to be that accessible.

    I have only barely dabbled in monk outside of leveling in my almost decade of playing but if these changes stick the landing i will be most assuredly making it my preffered melee of choice to play

    I know that a lot of people will hate this take, but I don't really care if they are making classes accessible as long as they are not on a SMN level, optimization will always be a thing no matter what even if its tiny, but getting way more people to playing the game or playing monk is a big W in my dictionary.

    LoL has like what, 4 buttons per character and yet it remains highly engaging combat wise. YoshiP says he respects our time, but sitting at a training dummy for hours to memorize a rotation is such a drag. I would love to see simplified classes and more randomized, less choreographed battles in the future.

    @@sirbear9396 I agree, less buttons doesn't necessarily mean easier but better consolidation of tools while leaving extra room to add more interesting and impactful skills. Take for example DRK where Delirium and Blood Weapon will be consolidated in one button since you're always using them together anyway, might as well fuse them together and the extra available slot, you can put a more interesting new button to press. I think people are afraid that the FF14 team is trying to simplify and remove buttons for the sake of simplification when in reality what is really happening is that we're running out of space for more abilities so removing some and fuse some others together is the only way to create extra room for the new buttons that will come in the future.

    True, optimisation will always be there but what matters more for some people is how impactful it is. Optimisation on MNK or BLM is far more impactful than it is on SMN. There's been a trend where room for optimisation has been decreasing across many jobs. You know it's bad when in places like The Balance, more people are saying "just crit more" instead of giving real advice. People wouldn't be saying that as often if optimisation was more impactful than crit disparity edit: grammar

    People were baby raging over nothing for the loss of Greased Lightning being made into a trait, which was absolutely necessary. GL as a thing you upkept was just...awful. Awful design. It punished you so hard and forced you to use PB to get your buff back for downtime. I loved loved loved the direction that they took Monk, this just seems to be the other "GL timer" trimming that they've done. I think everything'll be fine for Monk.
