People always want to say its ballet training, but I've had both and that's not what this is. Ballet is a completely different skill set. This video is highlighting a type of gymnastics that was trained more in the 1980's and 1990's because of the code and expectations of the time. It was much more acrobatic gymnastics skills at the time. You should look up acrobatic gymnastics. Most people have no idea what it is, so they just say ballet. You will be very impressed with acrobatic gymnasts!

I think body type is a big thing too, honestly. Skinnier bodies used to be more emphasized when selecting teams rather than more athletic builds, and the lines look more elegant than powerful. It's not the only reason for change in aesthetics, but I think it's a contributing factor

A lot of strength moves like the handstand to the arched back position, especially combined with arching as far as to put one's feet next to one's hands on the beam was stopped by the Physical Therapy community. When I went to Physical Therapy school, they had a course at their annual association meeting on gymnasts and other sports for children requiring over arching of the back and how it places a huge load on certain lumbar vertebrae which become dislocated, especially in pre-pubescent girls. You can actually better take this load after you become stronger resulting from menstruation. Which is why I'm so happy the age of gymnasts is skewing older and the over arching of college gymnastics salutes is no longer present in elite.

Completely agree. The problem with these types of “classic balletic gymnast videos” is that many of them are actually prepubescent children (the gymnast at 4:13 is 14 years old) and they have an unusual level of flexibility. After I read a news story years ago where a 5 year old girl in California ended up paralyzed for life from doing a backbend, I really don’t think these types of mounts are healthy for a gymnast’s longevity. Even today, the Chinese beam workers don’t compete for more than one quad.

@@ajess452Chinese gymnasts absolutely compete for more than one quad today, in fact they are competing for longer than ever. Even those who are retired from elite such as Shang Chungsong are still going, whichwas completely unheard of in the past. But one of main the reasons for them not competing for more than that in the past was because of how the centralised system was set up. Centralised programmes like that are essentially boarding schools, so once a gymnast has turned 18 and/or been to the Olympics the majority are actually ready to move on with their adult lives as opposed to having to live under restriction for another 4+ years. Daniela Silivas speaks about this with regards to her experience in Romania. She enjoyed her time as a gymnast, she has explicitly stated that she had good coaches, good teammates and had fun, but after 1988 she was bored because upon returning to the sport she realised it meant returning to the regimented life she had just spent the last 10 years living. The other is that thr factory system was specifically designed to churn out a new crop every 4 years, similarly to how Natalia Yurchenko and Olga Mostepanova were forced into retirement to make way for Elena Shushunova and Oksana Omelianchik in spite of outscoring them both in compulsories.

I think it's called a planche. And yes, as someone with hypermobility issues who often has terrible pain from my overflexible joints, I have to agree with this. Putting that much unnecessary stress on your lower back is a recipe for disaster. It's why the super flexible gymnasts (semi recent would be Hollie Vise, more recently, Morgan Hurd) never last that long--they always get sidelined with injuries, usually back injuries but always to their joints.

There are no banned elements on the balance beam and danger/risk of injury is not the reason they have become less common. They are less common because they aren't rewarded properly. You're correct--but the skills that have been banned because they are too dangerous are generally tumbling passes and bar releases. There's nothing about these beam mounts that presents the potential for traumatic injury. They're just not rewarded anymore. The acro skills and damn wolf turns in the routine interior are much more valuable now so the focus is on those. Nobody wants to "count" their mount as a skill so they do easy ones.
