Those Branch Line Engines

Фильм және анимация

James is always looking down on the smaller engines, but an opportunity arises for an engine bigger than him to show him up.
Series 1; Episode 2
This has been a long time coming. Filming started for this in November 2018, but a busy home life meant filming wasn't completed until June 2019. It's nice to finally have it finished though, and start looking at the next adventure.

    Murdoch actually has a lighter axle load than Thomas, because his axle-loading is spread out. So he could go chill at Ffarqhuar

    That was wonderful! The twist of Murdoch going up the branch line caught me so off guard that I had to rewind the video - Mavis' Toby/Murdoch crossover theme made that sequence! Really nice watch!

    It’s great to see the script being brought to life at last! The recording session was great fun, but it’s all come together so well with the music and visuals too - great job!

    To anyone confused about how Murdoch was able to work on the branch line, I have an potential theory. There are a number of big engines built for Main Line work, but are just light enough to work on some Secondary routes and Branch Lines. From what I remember, the British Railways 9F's were one such engine. He might have plenty of driving wheels, but the weight on his wheels is actually some tons lighter than an engine like Gordon or Henry. So, in theory, Murdoch could work on a branch line if needed. Though his power and speed would be much better suited for the mainline. By contrast, an engine of James' size and weight would be perfect for a branch line. But of course, James being James, he wouldn't much appreciate doing that too often!

    Great story. But wouldn't Murdoch be too heavy for the branch Line? He is a 9F after all. It's already been estaished that Henry and Gordon are too heavy for the branch, surely the same circumstance would apply to Murdoch? (Yes I am that guy)

    Great episode, Mr. Railway Inspector of youtube dot com! And now to wait another 12 months for episode 3... lol jk Love how you characterized and utilized Murdoch in this. Generous and brave of him to sacrifice his time to help out on Thomas' branch line... and disobey the Route Availability system in doing so- But I digress! Lighting seems to have improved a little, and I see you HAVE went through with cutting up the scenic backgrounds! Very good. Mavis' music is on point as usual, too. Character theme combos seem to be a recurring thing with them! 4:39 Intersting choices for character cameos too. Any chance we might see Splodge in a major supporting role sometime in the future? Great work once again! As always, I look forward to seeing what else you have in store...!

    The production quality on this one is incredible. Well done. I appreciated the meticulous audio editing and the ambitious camera shots. I will say the starts and stops with Murdoch in particular could have been smoother, and the narration could have been just a tiny bit louder. All in all, however, I’m very excited to see another channel with such high-quality production design. Looking forward to what you do next.

    Hang on, wouldn't the track and bridges on the branch line be too weak for Murdoch? I mean Gordon got away with it once but it kind of makes it worse considering Murdoch is heavier than Gordon.

  • @ThomasTheModelAdventures

    @ThomasTheModelAdventures

    Of course, Gordon’s weight is centred on just three driving axles, whereas Murdoch’s weight is over five and a longer wheelbase, so less weight would be focused within the same area. My awareness on “route availability” in the railway world isn’t great, but if you look at some heritage lines these days, a lot have engines much larger than would have actually run on them in the day. Or the alternative argument is that this isn’t necessarily set at the same time, and bridge works are bound to have taken place over the years and subsequently they have all been strengthens.

    @@ThomasTheModelAdventures Alright, fair point. Perhaps clearing that thing up in the story would've made it better, unless you couldn't fit it in with the classic series timeframe and all. That would be understandable.
