Thomson Road Grand Prix - Assetto Corsa Mod Track [Review]

Ойындар

Today's video takes a look at the Thomson Road Grand Prix mod track for Asseto Corsa. When I reviewed Fat Alfie's newest mod (Feldbergring) last month I mentioned that I wasn't at all surprised by either the quality or the scope of the mod. And that's because of Thomson Road.
Like many circuits of the time, Thomson Road Grand Prix was a circuit that made use of established roads, in this case linking what is now Singapore City and its northern suburbs. This Assetto Corsa mod is a real peach. Its creator has done a fantastic job of capturing the feel, atmosphere and sense of time and place.
If you would like to download the Thompson Road Grand Prix mod track for Assetto Corsa, then you can do so rom Race Department using the link below:

If you're interested in the Lola T290 mod, it's available in the AC Legends pack, which I reviewed here (note the updated link in the comments!):

Singaporean here. After Its closure from GP racing, Old upper Thomson road (yup that's Its name now) became popular for motorcycle racing in the 80s and several people died there. It's now the entrance to be a beautiful park and attracted fitness psychos.

Kinda late to the party but thanks for reviewing this track which features the original Singapore Grand Prix track. Its def a map which has been overlooked but as a Singaporean I knew about this track from my Dad and prob Uncles who will know how dangerous this track can be. Many fatal accidents did occured which killed the drivers. A total of seven lives were lost due to racing accidents in the 11 years history of the Singapore Grand Prix. Two lives were lost during the last two consecutive editions of the Grand Prix: at the 1972 Grand Prix, Lionel Chan, the nephew of local racing champion Chan Lye Choon, died after falling into a ravine while in the 1973 edition, Swiss competitor Joe Huber died after crashing his car into a cable pole. I still drive on the same stretch of roads during my daily commute to work and is still prob as dangerous as the 1970s because there is a lot more wild animals roaming around and crossing the roads esp at night.

Hey Lin Chester - thanks for the comment. I managed to visit Singapore earlier this year on business but wasn't able to find the time to get out to see the area - which is a shame. Though, staying in the Suntec City area did mean I could have a good snoop around the preparations for the Grand Prix!

@@ChrisHaye who ever did the mod is amazing to recreate the track based on old photos and videos. Some of the land marks and side markers are still there.

@@linchester8464 I know I'm late, but Ill also like to add that Thomson Road is also infamous for the biker racers illegally held there throughout the 80s and 90s, before the government clamp down.

Madness from an old public road circuit, and I absolutely love it! It's also come to mind that Thomson Road reminds me a bit of the Opatija/Preluk circuit in Croatia.

Hi Chris, I just re-visited your video as I just did one on Thompson-Road myself. I was reminded how much I loved your older videos on car and track mods, which only relied on your voice and very well done video editing.

Whenever I race there, the race ends at the hump... at least most of the time. The AI can't handle it on the lotus 49. But I enjoy it a lot. Great video as always.

Hey Giulliano - I know what you mean. The AI in Assetto Corsa seems to struggle with the 60's GP cars at a lot of mod circuits. The Imola 72 mod is even worse - I don't think I've ever successfully made it through Tamburello on lap 1 :/

  • @giuniral

Yes, it seems the 60's and low downforce cars depend a lot on AI hints. I've been exploring these parameters a little bit. The problem is, if you adjust AI hints for low downforce cars, the high downforce/ performance vehicles will be unrealistically slow on the critical areas. So it is a delicate balance.

Hey A_M - couldn't agree more. The AC modding community is really very impressive. Speaking of which, if you guys need an idea for a project, there really aren't many late 70's / early 80's GT prototypes about. It'd be great to see a Rondeau, Porsche 936 or a Renault Alpine :D

Hey Chris! I love your videos and I hope more and more simracers discover your channel! While watching your video reviews for AC I was wondering how to recreate some of the scenarios you tested the mod(s) in. For example what opponent cars you select to have a somewhat balanced race (do you BOP some of them ?). So I would sugest maybe you upload CM presets of opponent cars and/or track combo's. Maybe keep a google doc to keep them organized ? Also when you upload a video maybe you could upload the preset(s) you used when you made the video. Keep up the great work!

Hey All-Boy, yeah I can see that on the playback. I noticed it slightly on the raw footage, but I think KZread's compression has made it a bit more obvious, which is a shame. I think I need to get a separate capture card - even with a 1080TI, it's a delicate balance recording a QHD picture when using VR!

I need this track in my life.😍 Btw, i was wondering, what microphone do you use??

  • @ChrisHaye

    @ChrisHaye

    6 жыл бұрын

Hey Simon - I use a Shure SM7b. It's a pretty common microphone used in radio stations, and recording studios for male voices. It needs a bit more gain from the pre-amp than a lot of other microphones, so it's not really an ideal choice unless you have fairly good gear to plug it into (e.g. outboard preamp or a mixing desk). It's a bit overkill for KZread if I'm honest, but I've had mine for years as I have a bit of a background in music production.
