My wife of 34 years worked there in the office. She and the owners daughter, Gustafson if memory serves, put together the first Fox Ridge Outfitters catalog. My wife’s mother, who worked there, gave me my first muzzle loader, a white mountain carbine. When Smith bought them, they closed the factory in Rochester NH and also the retail Fox Ridge store. I bought two encores, one 223 and one 7mm-08. Got a camo rifle stock to convert the 7mm to a rifle for deer hunting. Thompson Center built quality!

I was working on a TRC '83 a few years ago that my customer had inherited. I can't remember what part he needed but I called back to the factory. Keep in mind that this was probably 20 years ago. I got someone on the phone and he said, "let me look around, I'll call you back." I thought: "I'll never hear from him again....." Not too long later he told me he found two of them, what's your address?" NO CHARGE, got them BOTH! This used to be the NORM in the firearms business.

After the TCR was discontinued I bought a used frame, just the frame and buttstock. I called the factory hoping against hope that they might still have forends for sale. They did not, but same thing, the guy said "Ithink have one laying around here somewhere if I can find it, give me your number and I'll call you back if I find it. An hour later he called and asked for my address. He sent it to me, no charge! What a guy!

Was going to send it back to factory, called first, receptionist said let me give you the guy who works on that model. He said "load 80 gr. 2f black powder and a 300 gr. Maxiball and I'll never hear from you again. I thought "yeah right" but tried it anyway. Result - tackdriver, if I miss it's my fault! I marked my ramrod and have never tried another load in 35+ years! Customer service knew how to fix the problem. Also have a New Englander 50 cal and 12 ga shotgun. I doubt that the line of T/C firearms of the 60's-80's will resurface. I was there in the 70's to the mid 80's when Ken Thompson and Warren Center were there. I was in the testing department and it was very interesting to see the changes of the Contender over the years. My first T/C was a 10" barrel Contender in .30-30 Winchester, for competing in IHMSA metallic silhouettes around 1987. It was recommended to me by Les Baer (back when he worked out of the original shop at his home in Allentown PA.) He also recommended the caliber, because it would reliably knock over the 55 lb. rams at 200 yds. After a while though, I switched to the .357 MAX chambering, which was adequately powerful and much less punishing to shoot a match with. Les also did a trigger job on it for me, which was a big improvement .

The .38/.357 barrel is fantastic but the one that changed my Attitude was the .45acp. It's amazing! Who knew you could shoot groups like that at 100yds with an old slow .45? So I picked up an octagonal .45Colt barrel -not the shotshell version. It's so slender and light and with the hotter loads I was shooting 64oz Gatorade bottles full of water at 200yds! WOW! But it was so light it kind of hurt after an long afternoon so I went out and bought a .460 S&W Magnum. What a flat shooter! Wonderful! And it all started with an old .45acp barrel I got in a trade. Somehow I let it get away and I miss it.

Agreed 100 percent on the .45 ACP. It’s a great way to check the accuracy of any .45 ACP ammo. On that .45 Colt barrel (I have the light one too), I just load it down. I like a 250 SWC cast bullet at about 800 fps. Still a bit of thump, but easy to shoot and has rifle-like accuracy. Roy

I was looking for an AR. Saw the Contender set. It had the forearms i liked for both the 14 and barrels. I asked to pick it up. Guy appoved. I set it down, told the guy i might be back. Moved over a row, came back and looked at it again. I could see the guy beginning to smile. I was thinking, "not so hadt buddy." Walked the rest of the show. Ni decent ARs. Decided I'd look at the Contender again. As I got to his table he looks at me and say "450 out door?" I said "Sold." Easiest haggle i ever made. I never said a word. Nice to see something besides another polymer frame, striker fired, 9mm handgun.🙄 T/C Contenders absolutely dominated the handgun metallic silhouette shooting competitions in the 80s and 90s when I was doing that. It was hard to actually _compete_ with anything else. They were also the dominant handgun hunting pistol. Lots of custom barrels and cartridges were available from outfits like JDJ and Gary Reeder. I hope they come back strong!

I know that the price of everything has gone crazy with the current inflation on every level, but one of the best things they could do is just keep the price reasonable. The cost is what ran me out of the contenders. When I had the option of buying a brand new bolt action rifle cheaper than just the cost of a barrel for my TC it just wasn't as much fun anymore! Of course it goes without saying that new barrels and frames should be interchangeable with old barrels and frames

I bought my Contender in 1983 in 30-30 and .223 Pachmyar grips. As God is my witness I've harvested 25 deer, 1 Bear with the 30-30 barrel and umpteen coyote, one Bobcat with the .223. When Hornaday introduced LeverEvolution 160gr, I hold a cloverleaf 1" group at 100yds and 4" group at 200 yards and have harvested 2 of my deer at 200/225 yards (rangefinder). The Bobcat was 211 yds per rangefinder, in the snow, on snowshoes calling coyotes. All shots leaning against a tree or shooting sticks. Also, I've won Lots of money shooting against buddies in camp. I ain't bragging, just saying I've had a LOT of fun hunting with this pistol during gun season and a bow during archery season. Fair chase all around.

Fantastic news. Learned about Contenders and XP-100's reading Bob Milek (RIP) in the 80's. I bought a used one in 2005 (i think) with an eye toward ground squirrels. Sold the 7x30 Waters barrel to partially pay for a 22 Hornet (how little i really knew about the Waters). Love the thing. Traded an unloved Kel Tec P11 to a friend for a scoped 17 HMR barrel, bought a 22 LR, and a few years ago a 357 Herrett from another friend (so far unfired by me; no room to reload, stuff is in storage). All 14". Still want 1 or 2 more. Would like to get some 9" barrels, esp a 41 Mag. That 45 ACP barrel that Roy mentioned is very interesting. So would a 10mm be. Would like a rifle barrel or 2, possibly a 25-06. I am very interested i 38-55, and i was just recently pricing barrels and wood on the Bulberry website. I love Roy's attitude, perpetual smile, and easygoing attitude. Would love to have dinner with him and talk guns, shooting and cop stuff. Better that i go to MO than he come back to Kalifornia. Lol. @@fmgpubs Hi Roy. Thanks for the reply. Glad you are well and healthy. Enjoyed your work for many years now, and love the vids and shorts. The Bulberry barrel i was considering is a 38-55. I don't think T/C ever chambered it. I am probably going to hold off though. Give T/C some business and get a 45-70 and a buttstock and forend. I meant to put in my comment that even if they start with just 5 or 6 popular chamberings (14" 223 and 30/30, 22 LR, 357,44 mag, maybe 35 Rem; 45/70 and 223 rifle, etc), that would be a good start, get product out there, and generate revenue. Then after a bit they could resume the lower volume stuff- 32-20, the shorter handgun barrels you mentioned, etc. Good luck, reborn T/C! We eagerly await
