You look at the toys now and they can't have anyone frowning or looking like anything other than a Disney World smile. It might be that they think angry faces are going to scare the kids or something, but that's a good thing. Kids need to be able to express more emotions than happy when they play or they'll get bored from a lack of conflict or point of interest. Thomas isn't going to smile when he has a head-on collision. Any sad or miffed faces they do make are toned down so that they look practically neutral. Something else that rubs me the wrong way is the texture and style of the CGI faces. They're all smooth and wrinkle-free. They all look cookie cutter and like they just squash and stretch the same face out with little definition, like cheekbones or brow ridges. Diesel 10's brow structure and cheek bones gave him his menacing grin. Now, he's just chubby and cheeky like everyone else.

Honestly if Diesel 10 didn't wimper when The Fatt Controller scolded him the movie would've been so much better. ANY REACTION OTHER THAN WIMPERING would've been better. They could've at least made him scoff or talk back to The Fatt Controller before finally agreeing to leave the Steamworks alone. I think the movie would've been a lot better just from that very small but important change. I mean, he was pretty decent in the movie, he basically manipulated Percy to get what he wanted, but still, that scene of Diesel 10 wimpering was awful.

The Biggest problem is that he needs to learn to put a break inbetween spoken lines of Dialogue, you may be able to get away with recording everything in one take but not pausing in the script or in editing between each character talking is just grading, and makes a majority of the show seem like everyone is on speed. Even when depicting Engines that are going to be pushing their 60s and 70s.

You know, if the cancelled “The Adventures of Thomas” film went further into development - the planned diesel character would’ve used similar character traits to Diesel 10 and so on... we could’ve seen plot lines like “Diesel was on a mission to hunt down the boy who was separated from his father by the Germans”. All the same, I’d really like to see those aspects come back for the upcoming Marc Forster film.

well you've got the "progressive Parents" who complain that the Steam engines vs. Diesels conflict was "railway racism" because the Diesels were always portrayed as the antagonists, to the point that even the "nice" diesels like Daisy and Boco were basically written out of the series (at least until the Brenner seasons, but alas, still no Boco) Of course, those who read the Railway Series or have an understanding of railway history would know that this mindset was because, like it or not, the Diesels WERE and ARE an existential threat to the Steam Engines One need only look at the second picture in the "Stepney the Bluebell Engine" RWS book to see exactly what was going on when these stories were first being written: Steam Engines were being scrapped en masse in the UK and in other parts of the world like the USA they were already long gone. I think because it's been so long since those days, now that even the people who remember the later days of steam on British Railways are themselves dying off simply by the passage of time, the message of the stories has been forgotten. Steam engines are these days rarely seen outside of museums, theme parks or heritage lines, and even the early day DIesels like the Class 08 shunters are themselves disappearing. The Stories are now just that, stories, as people no longer have that living, tangible connection.

What you say about memory of those who passed and time moving on, is indeed true. the golden age for steam engines has long past and now Diesels alongside other alter ative powered engines such as electric have taken certain stage. These 'progressive parents' despite the label, aren't really progressive and ignore the meaning of it. Problem is, in the thomas universe, RWS amd Classic series, Diesel's were the obvious threat, even if some didn't mean to be. They were meant to to replace steam engines as a more efficient form of machine and did so, so already its a conflict where one side is basically meant to replace the other which doesn't want to be replaced, but then what's for the Diesel's who are intended to replace steam engines? these parents fail to realize the greater scoope and just take things at face value, claiming to be progressive when really they are narrow minded and fail to look deeper into the conflict. The thing is, the whole situation of Steam vs Diesel was an unfortunate set of circumstances that lead to conflict, and was to be expected regardless. its something that should have stayed in the show, well written of course with some characters showing their is a grey area and that the whole situation is so much deeper.

CAE is an anomaly. They still make Diesel 10 a threat, in that Thomas, Percy, the Steamies and even the Diesels themselves are intimated by him. And even just before his redemption arc, he's doing a lot of hard, manual work with his claw showing off just how strong he really is. Hell, he still growls and considers not helping them out at all. Thomas still managed to get him to help out, but that's about it. He's still Diesel 10-ish in CAE; whereas in DOTD he's just... 10.

@@thecpmr6276 it wasnt nessesarily a analogy for anything even tho it looks like it is. alot of stuff in the shows in based on real life events of the characters likeness'. the steam vs diesel conflict was arguably the biggest event in railway history. diesel and electric never had to fight one other theyve always co-existed. hell even steam and electric co-existed without issue at one point. then came the diesels.... to throw that harmony out the window. the diesels forced thier way in and kicked the steamers to the scrap yards. diesels were the direct cause of so so so many steamers dieing, of freaking course theyre gonna hate each others guts. legit compare the good diesels to the bad diesels and its obvious to see... the nice diesels are often failures irl, they were kicked to the scrapyards before diesel was even fully realised much like steamers were. they know the steamers pain so can get along with them. where as the mean diesels (alot of which are class 08s) were often super successful diesels.... they have a superiority complex not cause theyre ageist or racist or whatever else, its cause irl they were superior... much like gordons a colossal dickshit cause hes "superior" to all the other main character steamers. hence why gordon also acts like a stunned mullet just like the bad diesels every time he gets shown up by quite literally anyone at quite literally anything.

I absolutely adore Diesel 10. I loved him in TaTMR and enjoyed his scenes in Calling all Engines. That post credit scene got me hella hyped and at the time I was really hoping he’d return as an antagonist. Unfortunately that didn’t happen and instead all we got was a watered down version of him. It hella sucks that we’re probably never gonna see Diesel 10’s sinister side again.

Diesel 10 was shown as being scary and intimidating throughout the entire special and then all of a sudden, he becomes all nice and such and helps the steamies and diesels clean and fix the Airport. Yeah, they’re jerks but not completely villainous and in 87546 and 98462’s cases, they were also described as jerks but it’s possible that’s all they were and not complete evil psychopaths like in common portrayals of them (like 98462 as Alfred). The likes of Big City Engine Sixteen MSR #2 Stanley/Smudger and Godred haven’t really came off as antagonistic types though or even complete jerks that were that bad just careless or disagreeable but not bullies, though I guess it’s possible Godred could work as a villainous type depending on if he was super bad to the others and would want revenge on them. I myself have thought of the S&M’s #1 working as a villainous type.

In the TATMR movie and a episode or special where thomas was too scared to ask diesel 10 for help when a tower fell on a runway at a airport and where Harvey was too busy so he had to ask Diesel 10 for help and he agrees but through that whole thing both thomas and percy were scared and both the diesels and steam engines where surprise when Diesel 10 came to help. That's how Intemadating he was even the diesels we somewhat scared of him.

Even in the Railway Series, you had "bad" characters. The diesels, with the exception of a few, were literally hell-bent on replacing the steam engines and taking over the railway. Great video as always man.

When you remove the villains from a story, the storytelling suffers very badly. Because the conflict disappears. Plus, it makes the storyteller a tiny bit of a villain too, because they’re teaching children of future generations that everything’s good with the world, and just keep buying their merchandise. This leaves the kids open to being hurt by the real monsters. Don’t traumatize kids, but don’t sugar-coat it either. That just leads to more trauma when the fantasy of a utopian world is inevitably broken.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. In Thomas the Magic Railroad Diesel was genuinely intimidating, you didn't want to mess with him. He was going to destroy Lady which would wipe out all the steam engines and he held Mr. Conductor over a bridge! and nearly (I guess he would've killed) killed James and Junior. (He had a great voice actor too but that's not the point.) But in day of the Diesels he's far too much of a pushover. When Sir Topham hat comes try put him in his place he whimpers. (Reminder, this is the same character who was going to wipe out all the steam engines.) Pretty disappointing. I'm still grateful we got diesel back.

I can't tell you how cheated I felt when I saw how watered down they made D10 in the CGI. He's not even intimidating anymore, but an annoyance, compared to the old D10 who literally scared me so bad as a girl that at one point, I couldn't even watch TATMR as I was so terrified of him. Even now as an adult, he still gives off that threatening vibe. And not every "bad" character in TTTE had to be scary: Diesel for example was sly and devious as opposed to scary, but still very much the bad guy. And you summed up characters like Spencer beautifully, characters who aren't exactly the good guys but not really the bad guys either, more self-centred than anything else. I always liked that diversity amongst the "bad guys" in the series and I think it really set an example to kids on the different types of "evil" (or I guess should I say villainy?). (And on a side note, I feel completely cheated by Day of the Diesels. Like the rest of CGI Thomas it looked like it had so much potential aaannnnddddd it was a big let-down. But then again I shouldn't be surprised considering how watered down the series has been ever since it was switched to CGI).

I mean I suppose Calling All Engines still at least tried to maintain Diesel 10 being an evil entity up until the last 15 minutes of the film. Every time he was on screen during that movie he may have just been doing work, but in a menacing way like “He’s just standing there... menacingly.” Like whenever I first watched it and saw Thomas quickly puff past him, I thought some form of continuity would happen and Diesel 10 would’ve chased him, but I was kinda disappointed. But his claw still moved menacingly towards Thomas in that scene so I suppose that was something.

If Mattel had grown the idea that the diesels themselves weren't the issue rather the other railway was pushing to "modernize" the railway, then that would be better... most of the original tales were based around the modernization plan, and how it was literally destroying the steam locomotives on the Mainland. By doing this, you could add more variety to the diesel fleet, with heavier locomotives rather than smaller shunters. BoCo, SpamCam, diesel 10 & Bear are the only diesels that as big as the mainline engines, you could have created a sense that these diesels are becoming more common, and many of the steam engines coming from the mainland are slowly becoming extinct. it would have helped drive the "steam team" and allowed for different characters to be substituted into the stories to make it fit.

So it's interesting to watch videos like this where you mention your introduction to the Thomas franchise was Magic Railroad. I grew up in the early/mid-90s and was immersed in seasons 1-4 of Thomas. Magic Railroad marked the end of my experiences with "new" Thomas episodes. Season 5 didn't impress me, and I lost interest in anything new from the franchise from that point onward. Three separate times in recent history I've tried to watch the entire Thomas franchise to see what happened in the years following, and as an adult I can't get past the middle of season 6. Nothing past that point "feels" like Thomas to me, and I cherish seasons 1-4 more than ever. I'm glad to see that the franchise has endured and that there are still so many fans, but I too share the immense disappointment in what Thomas has become in the last couple years especially.
