Are We Living In A Simulation? Consciousness & A Theory Of Everything | Thomas Campbell

Ғылым және технология

Thomas Campbell is a Nuclear Physicist, Lecturer, and Author of the "My Big T.O.E." (Theory of Everything) trilogy. He worked as a physicist in technology development and complex-system risk analysis for both government and industry. In addition, he championed for more than 50 years the scientific, drug-free research into altered states of consciousness. This unique combination enabled him to develop My Big TOE, a scientific model of reality based on the insight that consciousness - not matter - is fundamental to all existence. After obtaining degrees in mathematics and physics, he attained his PhD at the University of Virginia. His work includes 12 years in technical intelligence, 15 years at Missile Defense Agency, and 10 years as a consultant in the general area of large-systems risk and vulnerability analysis for various high-tech companies, including two years with NASA.

I love Tom and this channel is by far one of my favorites. Tom was right, the host has an easy going, genuine intelligence that is rare in podcast. He keeps up with Tom without competing with Tom. I've seen so many channels lately where the host wants to act like the feature...pre maturely. Tevin is becoming a feature the right way...naturally over time. Suffice to say, he's become relevant upon viewing far beyond a "question generator". Thank you Tom as always and thank you Tevin.

I was going to comment the same! I keep getting this other video that I’ve watched already autoplayed to me instead of the video I chose to queue. I’m so tired of that video, because the (well-known) KZreadr host has a slightly demanding, slightly condescending tone with his guest and is constantly interrupting him to modify the question being answered or to challenge the guest before he’s even done speaking-or even to say something he thinks sounds smarter than it does. The guest is so patient with him, but I find him rude and annoying. The host of this channel knows what’s up. I really appreciate his tone and graciousness.

Tom’s science based MBT makes so much sense. It helps me tremendously in understanding the nonsense that permeates our society at the moment. People are so filled with fear and have no concept of dealing with uncertainty gracefully. It is so clear to see how easy it is to be trapped in our beliefs and how it limits our growth

Been thinking about possible questions since you mentioned the possibility. I would love to see you set up an opportunity for Mr. Campbell to demonstrate his remote viewing abilities. You'd have to get him to agree in advance, of course. Maybe you could seal an object, or photograph in a box or envelope well in advance of your interview, and give him plenty of time to remotely view its contents? @@drtevinnaidu

A segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'... My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE, when I was struck by lightning during September 1970. Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist. For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing. The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists. Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication. For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything. NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

I like Tevin's idea of homeopathically exposing onself to idealism in order to get used to the idea in general. I think that's the right way to do it, especially in context of our ubiquitous conditioning towards a more materialistic way of sensemaking. It's important to get the dosing right - too little, and the ideas won't stick at all - too much, and you'll enter cognitive dissonance hell. That's why I always tell people to not start with Campbell's work - it's really out there, even for seasoned idealists. I used to dismiss his ideas a lot, but warmed up to them recently. While I am still skeptical of his claims, it's a really interesting framework to look at and contemplate. I think his metaphysics has a lot of explaining power, especially when it comes to high weirdness phenomena like UAPs, NDEs or the reincarnation literature. Anyway, great interview!

@infiniteshoeblack I only watch commercial TV "after the fact". If the reviews are very positive, I buy DVD "Complete Series" sets when available to binge watch w/o commercials. When young people call DVD's old fashioned, I ask them "Do you really think that your favorite movies and TV shows will be available on streaming forever?" I am partial to 1940's mystery and comedy movies. Think you will find them available at a moment's notice on streaming? I actually think DVDs will make a come-back when young folks realize this. "NOW" changes, and they seem to think what is popular right now will always be there for them on streaming. Yet even Amazon PRIME original movies are only available for a relatively short time before PRIME removes them.

I like the teleological question. The answer doesn't quite satisfy , saying it is the natural thing to do is still using the concepts we have within the simulation. So it doesn't really explain the why. I just don't think anyone can really explain the why. All concepts and theories are born out of our own realities so can they really map out why or how the system actually works. Unless we live in a simplified or lower resolution version of the system. But why the information system to begin with? Why not something else? Or are there others with different qualias? And completely different interfase relationships

Dr N, thanks for branching out beyond physicalism with such open-mindedness! You are a gem! I had not yet encountered Tom Campbel before this interview -- and found his thinking to be interesting enough I have ordered his book series. Thanks to you both! Despite that praise, I have a lot of distrust of his thinking process, at least as I drew it from the interview. The key objection I have, is that it looks like he considers the greatest support for his simulation hypothesis, is that it can be compatible with all sorts of apparently contradictory observations in our world. That is -- an OK circumstance for a worldview. BUT -- one really needs a hypothesis to make predictions, NOT to be adaptable to fit all data. Popper considers what is most important is whether a hypothesis EXCLUDES possibilities. And a "simulation hypothesis" seems to be just too adaptable, in that it seems Tom is able to come up with rationalizations for all possible observations. A few examples -- Tom says that a big bang having Fine Tuning for life makes sense as run 10,000,000 of a simulations series ... Well, not really. Anyone able to simulate a universe should have a much better idea of whether a particular physics engine could support life or not. No simulators would have to do X=large random draws on a poorly designed physics draw set, they would instead make a GOOD physics draw set to support life! And THIS "simulation" which per him ran for 10 billion years before there was any life in it, then another 4 billion without sentience in it -- is absurd to claim was built and being run to HOST SENTIENCE!! He claims that a readiness potential is evidence of a simulation. Say what? That our physics appears to have a lot of inertia -- such that a bio-system needs to start getting ready to do something before it does it -- is not evidence it is a SIMULATION. Simulations don't have consistent physics -- they are simplified to get to outcomes rather than being physics-consistent. No SIM puppets have all the joints and muscles and feedback sensors needed for an ankle joint to keep a biped upright. They basically impose "upright" and simplify the ankle joint. The evidence FOR a simulation would be such short-cuts that show simplified or incompatible physics. Tom asserts that speed of light limits show we are in a simulation. No again. Once more, compatible physics would not be critical for a simulation, because the outcome is not dependent on the hysics. He keeps talking about the rule set, but the rule set in h9is worldview is the SIMULATIONS constriants, not the apparnet simulated physics. I think he was regularly muddling these two very different sets of rules. A repeated re-gridding of a simulation, and varying grid resolution, would lead to speed of light NOT being a constant. And because of this, a simulation's physics would NOT be so dependet on SOL. I also disagreed with his reasoning about the fundamental nature of consciousness. Consciousness can be causal without being fundamental, AS HIS MODEL ILLUSTRATES, because HIS consciousness is NOT fundamental, but instead emergent/manufactured by some MORE fundamental consciousness. I agree with him that our experiences with the causal nature of consciousness, and parapsychology testing, show consciousness is causal, and that reductive physicalism is untrue. But there are other options. Identity theories can fit causal consciousness, so can emergent physicalism, or emergent dualism (although all are refuted by parapsych). Alternatives that can handle parapsych include dualism, triplism, and emergent idealism where emergent structures and phenomena are strongly emergent and independent of their substrate. So -- while I like Tom's inventiveness to build an interesting worldview, AND like his approach of reaching out to lots of non-standard test sets to challenge worldviews, I think he was not aggressive enough in considering ways to challenge to his own preferreed solution. I will look forward to reading his books, and will start with your round two interview with him. Thanks again Dr N!

@@drtevinnaidu Thanks Dr N -- I will try to pare down my thinking to a few more specific questions. OK -- "Tom, you say consciousness is fundamental in your worldview, but it isn't OUR consciousness that is fundamental. Ours, instead, is mindwiped, misled, and manipulated to be affected by non-real events in a virtual reality (drunkenness, brain injuries, etc.). Rather than a simple inference from mental causation, as you implied, isn't mental causation in our world in your model -- just another delusion passed off on "us" by manipulative simulators? Is this model just an idealist version of delusionism?" "Tom, if our universe was a simulation created to host complex intelligences like ourselves, to help a meta-intelligence grow -- why was our universe so badly constructed to do this? Multi-billion years of running a non-living pre-biotic model, then multi-billion years of single celled life, followed by multi-billion years of very simple living things, before a short period of ONE species of intelligent life -- this simulation seems like it was very BAD at doing what you say it was created to do! Failed design test cases, like the Problem of Evil, refute theological creator claims, this failed test case for good design of the simulation, is that not likewise a failed test case for your simulation creation hypothesis?" "Tom, the process of growth and diversification in evolution requires billions of failed variants, most of whom live lives of misery and rapid death, before a few lucky variants happen upon a successful evolutionary tweak. From any humane moral perspective, this is a morally horrific method of achieving diversity and growth. Yet you embrace this as a GOOD. Morally, I consider the overpopulation, competition, killing, and starvation intrinsic to evolutionary processes to be a demonstration that our universe is NOT run by an omnibenevolent deity. If our universe is a simulation, scarcity, competition, and killing need NOT have been made a central feature of it! While you embrace valid moral virtues of Love, Empathy, and Cooperation, how do you reconcile your embrace of real morality with your defense of the intrinsic evil of evolutionary processes? " The rest of my comments could also be turned into questions, but I fear that owuld be a very different style of interview than your much less combative approach. I hope these are in time for your interview. 🙂

Just adaptations that express to favor a better life and offsprings. What i am curious about is when the brain says who am I ?

It doesn’t feel very motivating to work extremely hard on close relationships if we’re just going to forget those we love in 5 min. It makes far more sense to me that if we’re collecting data that we would retain the data we collect. While Tom may be right it seems quite cold and even un motivating to me. 😢 How do you learn from experiences you can’t remember? When you deeply and sincerely love others the thought of forgetting them is one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard. What is the value of being an IUOC without relationships? It seems so depressing and lacks the depth and richness of life. Elon Musk said that if we’re in a virtual reality it is because it’s way better than reality. Our reality here sure seems far better than there.

All motion is teleportation. The teleported may mistake matter as being simulated information. Matter is not a simulation. Teleportation is either copy paste or cut paste. The paste operation is (n.)either particular or wave. The attractive nature of information is in property, real-estate or embodiment. Matter is now nowhere and now...here by the addition of space between information. The question to my mind is not, is reality really a simulation? How could gravity be simulated in a simulation? Could it be that gravity is a sign of a question - an information querie on the copy paste operator?

At 01:48 Thomas asks a rhetorical question what we can be aware of without the five senses, nothing. Some time ago I came to the same conclusion and it created a shift in my thinking. Had to conclude that personal consciousness is not conscious of itself, it needs senses and a brain to become and to be conscious. How can this be explained? Until that moment I was convinced that consciousness is fundamental, so why is personal consciousness not conscious of itself? Why does it differ with the fundamental consciousness, or... is the fundamental consciousness not conscious? Came to the conclusion that the fundamental is not conscious, and it is not consciousness. The fundamental doesn't have to be conscious because it doesn't think, doubt, etc. The funny thing, this "model" doesn't fit into any -ism, neither spacetime nor consciousness are fundamental.

What can we be aware of without the five senses? Thoughts, for instance, and probably also emotions. These things do not register through the senses, but occur directly in consciousness. Your premise/conclusion that consciousness is not conscious of itself but needs senses and a brain to become/be conscious is incorrect. Consciousness can be conscious of itself without the senses and the brain.

@@Erik-V Without a brain and senses you cannot be conscious and become conscious (if you are theoretically born without a brain and senses) because the personal consciousness is of itself not conscious. For thoughts and such you need context and context can only be obtained through the senses and brain. If you are born without a brain and senses you don't even know you were born, there is no way you can know or realize it. Everything you are aware of is obtained through the senses and the brain. There are 'imprints' in consciousness, but they can only be activated if there is context.

The information isn't exactly what the data says. So the data is independent of our interpretation of it. So, there is a 'way things are'', an objectivity about the data but we can not apprehend that without distorting it through our interpretation. Can we know the thing in itself independent of the filter of any consciousness? Seems impossible. Sounds like Kant. Seems we must be content with an ever improving yet inherently inaccurate map of the territory, in the best case scenario? So, should we abandon the ideal of ever acquiring complete objectivity?
