The replies above make me wonder. At the time Portugal was one of bests allies of Britain, while Spain had an alliance with the French (At least until they refused to let their armies march through spanish soil) Also spanish would be losing the Incas which they colonized Or am i missing something? I'm pretty sure i am, but i will give ot a try :)

@MackleMoreDiplo Rummy And don't forget both Oxford and Cambridge predate the existence of new world Empires. The Aztecs consolidated their Empire in 1325, the Incans in 1438. Oxford was established in 1096, during the reign of William II. And Cambridge in 1209. Both the greatest new world empires were still nomadic tribes by the time England had established colleges.

Crazy how most people don't realise that this song was not about the transatlantic slave trade and was actually about the Barbary pirates who came from north Africa and attacked the south of England and other european countries for over 300 years and took them for slaves but after the English civil war the Royal Navy was built up to such a power that they could no longer be attacked. BBC stop spreading this false narrative saying it's about having power during the Transatlantic slave trade. The proms have been around for 125 years and no one has bat an eyelid until you created this petty drama. People love the proms, people love the songs, people love being patriotic for 1 day in their lives where they're not seen as an extremist EDL member and can be proud of everything this country has been through and recognise its history, both good and bad. Stop virtue signalling and pretending you care about the BLM by taking something away from the majority, it's very hypocritical to seem like you hate racism when it took you 2 weeks to say sorry for saying the n word. Stop being pathetic and keep the lyrics in.

The sad thing is the song was written to celebrate the fact that Britain, being the only country in Europe to do so, banned slavery in its empire. That us the whole point of the song. Context of the song: this song was actually made in the 1700s when black Barbary pirates from North Africa were kidnapping white Europeans to sell in the Arab market. It is estimated that over 1 million Europeans were kidnapped in total, including citizens of the British Isles. Eventually, British ships went out to counter these kidnappings and bring down the Barbary pirates in order protect British citizens. This is a song that British people should be proud, for it is this song that was used to inspire the patriotism of the sailors at see that saved our ancestors from slavery. You left-wing hypocrites should be ashamed of yourself.

It is a travesty that in our schools we are not taught to admire these bastions of freedom. Without Brittanias struggle to uphold the values of the reformation, none of us would be free. Free as sovereign individuals and free to call out injustice and oppression. Let this song ever be our anthem of gratitude and praise!
