That championship record will always be astonishing to me. What separates Hicham from other middle distance runners of today is his closing speed. He has the natural ability to run sub 56 second laps and kick to a sub 54 on the final lap. It’s honestly unreal what this athlete was able to accomplish, and it’s no surprise that he holds 3 world records that have lasted over 20 years. Imagine what times he would be able to hit if he had the same shoe technology that athletes have today.

Hicham el Guerrouj career is almost like Movie script, full with drama, defeat, disappointment, but somehome Hicham el G. did not give up his Olympic dream. In 1996 :Atlanta Olympics: Falling down in last lap. In 2000 Sydney: losing in the last 50 meter. They only thing that kept him in the olympic race were his World Records & Champions. What Hicham distinguished was his "no-surrender"-Character. He's type guy who is very hard on himself when it comes to training. Talent is not enough. He kept growing with his olympic failures and didn't shrink to blame others. He kept believing, while nobody though that he still had to chance to win 1500m and 5000m in 2004 Athens. Legend...THE GOAT of the mile/1500m.

Hicham El Guerrouj is the greatest middle distance runner ever at least in my opinion and these records amazingly were set before Jakob Ingebrigten was even born but Jakob seems to have the potential to break some of them with the likes of Josh Kerr as competition.

I agree, I am pretty sure Jakob will break his 1500m WR but how much is down to the Dragonfly spikes? They offer a significant advantage over traditional spikes, plus with wavelight technology it helps massively with pacing.

  • @staceman7981

Agreed. I would put money on Jakob to eventually break one or more of El G's world records. His already considerable accomplishments and his tremendous focus and professional approach suggests that Jakob may finish his career as the greatest ever. But for now, that title still belongs to El Guerrouj, and it still may remain his title. Nothing is guaranteed to Jakob.

@@rossfripp4503 shoes - yes, but mostly for longer distances (10k to marathon). Wavelight - no, very few of the insane times we see now has been down to wavelight. These extreme performances are down to many people finally breaking the code with treshold training some years back, and now we finally see the results. Also a lot more organized runnint groups.
