The psychological aspect of a camera lut is that it makes you/anyone else looking at the footage on set more confident about what you are shooting as opposed to staring at a flat log image.

It's kinda cool how the process of developing a digital look before principal photography is basically the same as in the film days. The director and DOP would work together and do extensive tests to figure out which film stocks to use, and what type of processing to do to get the specific look they were searching for. I remember watching a behind the scenes of Phantom Thread and seeing just how much work PTA did before he found the correct film stock and processing he was looking for for his movie.

In fact, it has been the case for quite a long time.. pretty much since the arrival of the Alexa Classic in 2009-2010. That’s how they develop the look of the film and set lights. They need to have a good idea (not final) of what the image will look like once they fully process the image into a pre-determined film look (they light based on the result they see on set). It’s just that we’re just beginning to really "hear" about this kind of stuff with Jill and The Joker, but it’s actually very commun practice in Hollywood.

Great advice. Preparing your production by capturing an indoor and outdoor scene to create your LUT with the look you want is brilliant. This should be talked about more often. Thanks.

@@annobidigwe7079 Oh, I missed this. Yes, I'm a filmmaker. As a visual effects artist, I worked on 40 feature films. Independently, I've DP'd a feature film and currently developing short films and a web series.

Bro, thanks for the valuable information. I knew about most of what you're telling, but I didn't know that the dehancer has such a feature, it was useful to find out. It would not be superfluous to add that in a big movie, all the costumes of the characters are pre-filmed to see how critically their shade changes. If possible, they take shots at the location in advance, for the same purpose.

Ayy mate you basically be a colorist, cook a ShowLut and also act as a DIT for yourself. Tho you prolly end up with a couple signature you like than making a new one every time. Good vid.
