This Will Change Your Perspective On Killian Hayes..

Спорт

I used to watch tons of Detroit Pistons games back when Deividas Sirvydis was still a part of the team. In every game, Killian Hayes stood out to me as a pretty bad player. He would either miss every single shot he took or make stupid attempts to squeeze the ball into a crowded paint. Simply put, I wasn't a fan of Killian Hayes. So, I decided to analyze his game, and it completely changed my perspective on Killian Hayes.

Here is my perspective on Killian Hayes. He was chosen way too high. If he was chosen in the second round of the draft I could see that. He was a guy who had only played 10 games in a lower division league in Germany who seemed to have some promise but there wasn't enough background on him to justify a first round pick. He plays decent defense. He shoots free throws well and he has good court vision. He just doesn't score or shoot well from the field. He exemplifies a problem with the current drafting system and that is young players who haven't really been tested are chosen so high up in the draft based simply on upside. 1 or 2 is fine but nowadays, actual tested college players with more than one year experience are the exception for first round picks.

@@calebmoore1861to understand why you are wrong, consider Ben Simmons who was the #1 pick in the NBA draft. Like Killian Hayes, Ben showed above average defensive skills for a guard, and flashed elite playmaking. Unlike Hayes, Simmons knew his NBA head coach, Brett Brown, from Day 1 because Brown coached Ben's father in Australia when Simmons was a kid. Ben also had superstar guards like Jimmy Butler and elite 3-point shooters like J.J. Redick on his team to learn from and be mentored by. But perhaps the most profound advantage Ben had that Killian never did is Simmons skipped his entire first year in the NBA rehabbing an injury. That extra year to "just listen and learn" helped propelled Ben the following season to the same "NBA Rookie of the Year" his Philadelphia 76ers predecessor, Michael Carter-Williams won. None of this mattered because of the one main trait Ben shares with Killian: he flat out sucks at shooting and has not improved at it over time. However, because the Philadelphia 76ers front office had issues and had an inexperienced GM who had to make a decision on Simmons, they resigned Ben to a designated rookie max extension. This turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes of "The Process" and many in Philly are predicting it will ultimately be the reason "The Process" failed. Ben averaged numbers so bad last season, he wasn't even worthy of a bench role. The Detroit Pistons do not want a repeat of "The Process, and will therefore not invest in him the way Philly did with Ben. But mostly, what this proves is it doesn't really matter what situation you are drafted into. If you suck at shooting and don't make a serious effort to improve, you will not be a "backup PG" but more likely, out of the league. 🏀

Let's give new coach Monty Williams a season to work with Killian. Williams has a history of developing young players - and Killian is still young enough to continue to develop his game. If he doesn't show some significant improvement over the course of the season as a bench player - well, let's cross that bridge when we get to it.

Also, props to the comment section for not getting stupid. I know Killian is super divisive for some reason (mostly because Pistons fans wanted Haliburton. But remember, if Pistons draft Haliburton they don't draft Cade) but this comment section has not flown off the handle.

I think the biggest problem with Hayes is that the Pistons don't have any great shooters from three in their young core. Adding Sasser, Morris and Harris to Bojan and Burks will make it easier to focus on his playmaking this year. Cade being back should take some pressure off as well.

Under John Beilein, Killian Hayes is REINVENTING HIS JUMPSHOT. HIS LEFT-HANDED JUMP SHOT. When former UM Coach Beilein was hired, fans wondered why. The ANSWER came in the form of the Pistons VERY PUBLICLY explaining that Beilein would customize Developmental Programs. Killian Hayes Jumpshot was the featured project. It's kinda like Tiger Woods reinventing his Golf Swing. RIP HAMILTON COMMERCIAL: "You wanna shoot like me? That could be difficult. You have to shoot 1000 jumpers a day for 20 years." TWENTY YEARS! Killian's NEW Jumper is what, 2 YRS OLD? Killian was an APPRENTICE who was forced to start, and had Cory Joseph as a Mentor. Killian deserves a FRESH SLATE. What was he supposed to accomplish with Plumlee, Grant, Kelly Olynyk, Trey Lyles, Cory Joseph, Saben Lee, Braxton Key, Luke Kennard, Isaiah Livers, Eugene Omoruyi, Kevin Knox, etc?

That works for forwards, but killian’s a point guard. As long as he can’t shoot, he’ll always hold back his team’s offense. Ben Simmons had the same issue. With as good as Ben Simmons’ defense and passing was, his inability to shoot 3’s always held back his team, especially in the playoffs where teams would exploit it the most. That’s just how it is in the modern nba.

@@obi3924 Its still works even for a PG, especially for taller PGs. If you see the clips for these video alone, there were 5-6 clips that he should do a 45 cut to counter the strong side double team but he didn't. And as you said, it's modern NBA, which is positionless, which makes cutting roles good for everyone even for smaller players. Yes he still needs to improve his shooting but shooting isn't the only answer to his lack of production because if you watch the clips, he is not a good off-ball player.

@@obi3924 Even simmons do great cutting, the problem for simmons is he cuts just to pass not to shoot. Even the most viral clip of simmons passing the ball, that was a great cut he just didn't shot the ball.

i strongly disagree out of the league in an year or 2, didnt the pistons select another ball handler to replace him in this years draft? no D, bad 3 ball and streaky shooting fg%.. The only skill worth talking about him is the turnover to assist ration its not bad with 6 assist to 1.5 turnover. Its hilarious ''ball junkie'' talk about lockdown D but killian on the nba site and filtering defensive win shares the dude is ranked 311 in his one ''strong point'' 😂😂😂 or how dude opponents points allowed in the paint are higher then centers like plumlee 😂

Pistons fan here and Hayes at best is an average defender. He gets steals yes but is eaten alive in man to man d for the most part and often gets lost in in screens. He was benched a few times in favour of Joesph cause of his poor d. Hayes is one the worst players I have ever seen in a pistons uniform I didn’t think you really watched pistons games. Most times he grinds the offence to halt. He was bottom ten player in transition and the worst player in the nba against the zone. He has played 20 good games in 170 starts. Look at his averages the last 33 games this year. Absolutely disgusting

People talk about Killian Hayes being a "7th Pick Bust". Why? Because he couldn't carry Kelly Olynyk, Trey Lyles, and Cory Joseph to the Playoffs? Was Killian supposed to make up for the injured Jerami Grant? Was Killian supposed to make Mason Plumlee breakout? Killian hasn't even had LEGIT BIGS or FINISHERS to pass to yet. Let's see how "TRUE ROOKIE" Killian does with Duren, Wiseman, and Bagley instead of Olynyk, Lyles, and Braxton Key.

shooting... really? 🤔 What MANTRAS have PAST DYNASTIES USED? WHAT WAS THEIR FOCUS? "Offense wins GAMES, but DEFENSE wins CHAMPIONSHIPS!" "NO REBOUNDS, NO RINGS!!" NOW... What's that MANTRA about SHOOTING? HUH? There ISN'T ONE? What does the fact that there is no SHOOTING MANTRA associated with winning tell you. What do CHAMPIONS FOCUS ON?

Ball Junkie... Fixating on what NUMBER someone was chosen at is LOWBROW. Troy Weaver has said his Draft approach is to GET THE PERSON RIGHT. If Killian Hayes was the PERSON Weaver wanted anyway, then Weav would have tried to make it happen regardless of what pick it was. 🤔 Troy Weaver also said he does not look for shooting in the Draft or Free Agency. If you're NOT ON THE SAME PAGE WITH WEAVER AS THE PISTONS, THEN YOU'RE NOT EVALUATING THE PISTONS.

PISTONS OPPONENTS SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO SCOUT EVERY PISTONS PLAYER'S WEAKNESS ON KZread. IT'S THE EQUIVALENT OF BEING AN "ADVANCED SCOUT" FOR THE OPPONENT IF YOU EXPOSE EVERY WEAKNESS, BECAUSE NOBODY IS PERFECT. EVERY PLAYER HAS WEAKNESSES. PISTONS PLAYERS, TOO. WHY BE A SCOUTING REPORT FOR OPPONENTS? WHY MAKE THINGS EASIER FOR THEM? WOULD YOU LET US KNOW ALL YOUR MOTHER'S FLAWS AND WEAKNESSES?
