This Will Change Your Mind | XGIMI Horizon Ultra Review
Ғылым және технология
This is a review of the XGIMI Horizon Ultra Projector, and it does something I never would have expected!
This video is sponsored by XGIMI all opinions are my own.
The XGIMI Horizon Ultra is the first projector ever to feature Dolby Vision. It has a motorised lens cover, Motorised optical zoom, Harmon Kardon speakers, the best keystone correction I've ever seen, and at less than 18ms latency it is one of the best projectors for gaming. Best lifestyle projector for 2023 hands down, and it features Wifi-6 and Android 11.
If you're looking for XGIMI Horizon Pro versus XGIMI Horizon Ultra, then look no further, I got you covered.

I kind of agree with you that without doing side by sides most people would be absolutely blown away by almost every modern laser/led projector. XHU has some very good features like optical zoom and the hybrid light source and I think that should be commended. That said, if you're spending money (kind of a lot of money), I think getting the best of whatever is on the market makes sense. In this case XHU is the best when it comes to 3D performance and flexibility in placement, but has lower overall picture quality due to contrast issues. Anywho, thanks for the shoutout, great video as always :)

Thanks dude. I wholeheartedly agree. I think my point was that certain features are more valuable than others to individuals and that to me personally contrast ratios have now reached a point where I can’t tell the difference anymore unless the two projectors are side by side. Doesn’t mean there isn’t value in knowing the stats, quite the opposite, your videos are invaluable because if I have two projectors to choose from and the functionality is identical, then I’m gonna pick the one with the better stats. Your comparisons are god mode by the way. 😍 xxx

@@paulhibbert I agree with you about the fact that we have all become a bit hung up on "spec-porn" but I think we should differentiate a bit. The war for more nits is something I personally really don't get, because I don't want my TV or Projector to outshine the sun. The fact that my man cave is in a cellar room and I can control the ambient light perfectly probably helps with that though. At the same time, I think contrast does matter, because there is so much "dark" content these days (House of Usher anyone?) that having good black and near black performance is quite valuable. Good contrast also mitigates the need for high brightness to an extent. The main "issue" for me with any kind of Projector is letterbox bars though. I have yet to see a projector that can deal with those properly without the help of special, motorised multi-format screens.

I’ve owned one of these for a month and I use it every day. It’s in our bedroom. It is 100% WAF 10 and VERY flexible in placement and, even though the contrast is relatively poor, we hardly notice it. I’m not sure if this was covered, but one thing worth buying this for is the EXCELLENT 3D performance. With the £21 XGIMI glasses this is the best out there!!

Another great video, although I was sorting something out when you were promoting your socials and I heard ‘the link to my exes is in the description’ without looking at the logos I did, for a minute think the video took a strange turn at the end 😂
I like your projector vids Paul I really do, and I'm quite knowledgeable about projectors having used them for 20yrs now, but your perspective about lumens, contrast and so on has been undermined by the fact that you have an ALR vividstorm and that just makes all the difference to black levels (ie moving it down) which impacts perceived contrast (ie raising it). This is provided the projector has sufficient lumens to overcome the typical lower gain of the ALR screen. If you reviewed two projector products with measurable contrast differences on a decent quality 1.0-1.3 gain white screen in a less than perfect room I think your perspective on specs might be quite different.
The star wars bit made me laugh. Thanks for that :P

There’s another major thing that we get in the cinema and that’s the surrounding sound. I think these projectors need a sound system too, I have tried that and even a cheap 5.1 makes the experience sooo much better
I love your work Paul! Especially your honesty and habit of covering all the aspects of each new equipment. But when I heard you praising “digital” keystone correction right after pissing on digital zoom and how it introduces artifacts I became like 🤔. Aside from this, thanks a lot for the review

You are correct, I put it like this: Everyone can see the difference between 'bad' and 'good', but most people don't see it between 'good' and 'very good'.
Great rant! The only 2 things I care about in a screen / projector are black levels and colour accuracy. As long as the brightness is good enough, I’m good.

I love your videos! On this one, I have to say, when you started to talk about how as kids we only cared about big screen and not bright screen, you're talking about a pitch-black movie theather, so surely that wasn't a problem back there. in home environments not everyone can (or even want) to get completely in the dark to watch something in the middle of the day. Plus, two minutes later you say "everytime I see a projector this bright I-I'm honestly mesmerized by it" xD
@paulhibbert
7 ай бұрын
You see, whether a room is pitch black or has the curtains open contrast ratio is still a thing. The projector casts light to give us a picture but leaves the light off for the darker areas of a picture. Some do this better than others and the worse projectors have grey areas in totally dark rooms instead of black areas, and this projector is TECHNICALLY worse than its closest competitors at doing so. The same was true in the cinemas in the 90’s, some were better than others but we didn’t notice or care. The brightness of a projector is a different capability from its ability to leave areas dark.
Did anyone else thing Paul was going to say "You can easily still watch Casual...ty" at the 9 min 20ish mark 😂 The pinnacle of TV broadcast benchmarks.

Thanks for the video Question though how will this perform with a curved screen or an anamorphic lense
Another great video! On the topic, Netflix is no longer the darling child of streaming services, not being certified for Netflix doesn't carry the same weight it might have a few years ago.
Hi:) thanks for the great review. I have a bit of a weird question- does the KZread app support changing the playback speed? It is quite a big decision Factor for me and I can't find the info anywhere. Thanks in advance:)
We desire the high contrast ratios and deep blacks because us projector people want the best possible that can approach these levels in OLED monitors. It's good that the manufacturers strive to make these numbers better.

Could you do a side by side comparison with the nebula cosmos laser 4k? Thanks, cool videos by the way
Paul, a video challenge for you - can you make a video for those of us with small or odd shape rooms that can't fit a 100" screen but who really want a UST projector - is there one that can throw a smaller pic like 160cm in that incredible quality but close up to the screen so we don't have to share the room space with a long throw one... ??? I know its illogical but hey, I am not Spock! Thanks for putting the smile back each video, love the humour.
This projector with apple tv is way tooo good! nice video btw
The star wars skit was super funny. Reminded me of the old ch4 tv show the Adam and Jo show back in fhe 90s and 00s where they did this all the time. 😂
As the owner of a dirt cheap RedMi 85" TV I can confirm that the size trumps any HDR etc that Samsung and LG have for another $1000. 85" is a fantastic size. As for projectors, my low end XGIMI is barely 2" bigger due to the fact I can't get it far enough away from the target wall. Maybe this unit here could be the upgrade I need. The zoom is what I need, which is probably in fact a reverse zoom and actually making the lens more Wide Angle. Good stuff.
Too be fair. Nits or Lumens in projectors are super important!! I've got an Epson projector, and I tested a business projector against a Home cinema projector. 2500lumens at any size over 80inch is wayyy too dull for a TV replacement. I've got 4400lumen Business Epson and It works with all the blinds down and 1 light on in the room at 130inch. My projector is only FullHD at that light output but you can't see the pixels 2 meters away. There are 4k short throw projectors at 4000€ with 4000Lumens.
Amazing review. One question about this projector: can't you just Chromecast Netflix off your phone to it, in 4K?
Tyra Banks Jurrassic Park was worth the whole video!... lol
Omg I pissed my self laughing at this video. The starwars cut out was brilliant Paul.

It’s a great projector I have this with the Sonos Arc but it struggles with auto detecting arc/earc audio input . You have to keep toggling it from auto to off when you restart the device
@zanetaylor7

Good to know!
Hi Paul What was the projector screen you were using ?
If this was short throw my TV would be gone as it's actually cheaper than the 86" TV I was looking at getting - at what distance from the surface would the projector have to be to get that size image? I'm sure another creator has probably covered it but many don't give a decent distance to screen size list.
What is the laser speckle like on the Vividstorm Obsidian? Many people complain about the speckle on ALR screens - I plan on sitting rather close to it, and I'm deciding whether to go with Xgimi Aura UST or Horizon Ultra (using a Vividstorm screen).
It's all about those lumens!!!! For me anyway 😅 I moved back to a TV because I wanted to be able to open the curtains and no 4k projectors at the time. Still might be a bit before I can get enough lumens for this room
I’m going to watch The Marvels this weekend, as I’m sure you will be too as a marvel fan. Being the more knowledgeable about cinematic elements which cinema would you recommend for this event? The two nearest to me are Vue and Reel.
0:18 THAT NOISE !!! xDDD
He did well to not mention 4K in the title and description, for those wondering this is a 1080p projector with pixel orbiting - not a true native 4K DLP.
@paulhibbert
7 ай бұрын
You reckon you can tell the difference do you? 😂
@slinkytrips
7 ай бұрын
While it does limit your max frame rate that will mostly be a problem for gamers running really high frame rates at high resolutions. Where the pixel orbiting lets you down is brightness, you are relying on persistence of vision which is why units like this have a lower lumen rating.
@paulhibbert Just a couple of points HDMI eARC/ARC is always used for surround systems, likely you'll never use TosLink. As to your commentary about technology improvements, I'd have to agree, as an AV installer it never ceases to surprise me at the reaction from clients when I show them 4k on the TV they have had for months, it goes something like "OMG I didn't know it did that". Premium end TVs do have useful picture and sound enhancements, but as you say it can be hard to tell without side by side comparisons.
You’re absolutely right that most people neither notice nor care about lumens or contrast, except when it’s really bad. For me, it’s just numbers used in a willy waving contest. But then I’m also one of those people who thought the original HD release was focussed on entirely the wrong things. Yes, I love the improved sharpness and clarity of the picture, but that’s about it. Sometimes I find the higher resolutions introduce a level of “uncanny valley”, making even slightly fettled films look somewhat unreal. But the thing that really bothered me was the people babbling on about how you could count the wrinkles on Harrison Ford’s face. Sorry, but if you’re noticing details like that, you’re not really enjoying the film, which kind of defeats the purpose. Oh, and “hoik” is very much a real word. I use it a lot
I think @paulhibbert needs to start reviewing bed frames next :P
Hi what is best way to connect up a sound bar via e-arc if the pj is at the back of the room and you want the sound bar at the front so it's facing you. Also will I get dolby atmos if I buy a sb with it
Which screen are you using? ALR or UST screen?

@@ALaModePi I did watch it. And in fact, contrast ratio matters _more_ than what manufacturers make it out to be. Manufacturers tend to focus on numbers people actually understand, such as resolution, which actually doesn't matter all that much past a certain point. And the reason most manufacturers don't focus on contrast ratio as much as in other areas, is because they are pushing products that have very poor contrast ratio, such as any DLP projector. For instance, a 1080p LCoS projector will look better than a 4k DLP projector in dark scenes. There is no point in having 4x the pixel count, if all you have is 4 times more pixels that look like shit.

Hard to say as I don’t know what the deal is, if you’re talking hundreds of pounds then take the deal 😊

@@paulhibbert thanks for the reply! Basically the big difference between the two is higher brightness on Ultra and lower refresh rate? If going on a dedicated dark room basement probably isn't enough to justify higher cost?
Question for projector users. Do you find it odd thf sound not coming from the the screen?

That’s a good question actually! It’s a weird thing because you forget after about a minute. Personally I would always hook up my projector to the surround sound system for long term use, but the speakers are ace for portability

Depends where you sit in relation to the projector I suppose. When in the garden we sit behind it so the sound is roughly coming from the right place but when I had a ceiling mount used a 5.1 setup to avoid this

Yes. I pipe it to speakers nearer the front of the room.
You should do a review on Apple TV

If you can plug in an Apple TV to the hdmi port there’s your way round the ‘Netflix not allowed’ issue with this projector. I love my little black box and it’s not even the latest model remote.
Why would you get an UST over this out of interest? Thanks
Oh… it’s not just the corp greed of the manufacturers it’s also the broadcasters too…. Compressing the SD channels so much to make the HD look significantly better so they can then charge extra for HD channels…
But does it work with Home Assistant? Especially as it seems 'Home Assistant Guy' also obsesses about nits?

Can you turn it on and off with home assistant? I'm still rocking an old 1080p benq because I can send commands to the serial port with a raspberry pi. HOOOOME ASSISTANT.... HOOOOME ASSISTANT HOOOOME ASSISTANT

Does it have a headphone jack?
100% agree with this ridiculous chasing of 2 % better on something......exactly same ridiculous chasing of latest GFX cards et el
Does it do anamorphic or do you still get black bars?

Tyra Banks may have been the best bit yet. I almost pissed myself
You get what you pay for, looks like a decent projector.
2 simple questions I think you could have covered. image processor (pixel shifting? Which sensor), and lamp (halogen, LED, Laser?)
Filming from Sherwood Forest? 😂
