This Week in Sportsball: 2024 NHL Free Agency Edition

The Salary Cap is finally going back up again in the NHL! That means it's time for the free market to do its thing. Bottom sixers and third-pairing defensemen getting a bag for their services, even if they're being quite overpaid for it. That's the price of free agency: It's a pay-to-play game, and if you don't have the stomach to open the vaults for these talents, you'll have to sit this out.
This video is devoted to the future buyer's remorse that will come for more than a few of these contracts. Hopefully it's not for your favorite team.

    8 mil per year is an overpay at this point in his career. I get he scored 40 goals, but half were on the power play and almost all goals were with Kucherov, the Art Ross winner and MVP runner up. I think 65 points in Nashville is reasonable but Guentzel is an improvement at this point.

    As a Sabres fan honestly Savoie was the easiest for us to lose. His injuries pushed him from possibly elite to top 6 and they haven't stopped. It's more or less the argument of he's elite but he's not going to last. Regardless they did what really was needed. It isn't flashy, but aside from trading for someone if Quinn gets injured the bottom 6 was the problem. We couldn't have anyone we could truly say was reliable in the bottom 6 to shut down anyone's top line. That's what cost us games. Skinner also would've ended up a 9m healthy scratch under Ruff

    The best case scenario for the DeBrusk signing would be for him to be the Bertuzzi to Pettersson's Naslund. I'm really hoping for him to be good at least, because the reason why Jake was so streaky in Boston is that he and the coaches the Bruins had did not mesh well together. Tocchet aligns with DeBrusk's wavelength way more on paper, and I hope it's the same in action. He's a really good defensive player, though, and he always comes in clutch in the playoffs.

    I know it is free agency, but there is one thing for the Rangers and Sharks you forgot to mention. Barclay Goodrow. Barclay Goodrow was bought out by the Rangers despite a surprising playoff run. He was grossly overpaid, and his performance in the regular season was worse. With Lindgren and Schneider expecting a new contract, we needed cap space to extend them both. Goodrow is definitely not worth $3.6 million for 6 years. After 3 years, the team had enough. The Rangers put him on waivers. Knowing what Goodrow brings, it was only a matter of time before someone claimed him. That team did. The San Jose Sharks claimed Barclay Goodrow. He is going back to the Sharks where it all started. We can't call the Sharks idiots desperate enough to get the Goodrow contract off our hands. He still is good and can definitely help with the Sharks depth (especially depth last season was a bunch of "Who the hell are these guys?"). It sucks to see Goodrow go, but it had to be done. The worst contract in Rangers history is officially off our hands. The Sharks will have him for 3 more years (which is the contract we SHOULD HAVE given Goodrow, not 6!!), and he should help with the Sharks. Although, I will admit how we handled it was wrong.

    as a jackets fan… the term is long for monahan but if he can get gaudreau going and stay back in form, it’s an overpay but when you’re the blue jackets you kinda have to. its more about whether fantilli, lindstrom and/or sillinger develop properly.

    I don't know why people are surprised Marner is still with the Leafs, if there were no rules it would obviously be time to move on. However with NMC/NTC and a 10+ million dollar contract I'm not sure how people expected that to get done.

  • @BAMFshee

    @BAMFshee

    23 күн бұрын

    Absolutely. Even without the NTC, you're not going to get any remotely worthwhile return for a player with a $10M cap hit who only has one year left on his deal. If anything, *Toronto* would have to pay for someone else to take him this year. He'll be stuck in Toronto for one more year, then he'll be gone in free agency.

    Kings gave up the third-least goals against, ninth in goal differential, 16th in goal for. They did upgrade the net but did not get additional offense unless Foegele plays really well. Arvidsson is a great player but gets hurt a lot. I agree on the overpaying Edmundson, that hurt. Kings aren't lost if Byfield keeps producing and Clarke makes an impact.
