They don't make this model any more. All their gas trimmers have air filters

As an owner of a 1988 Stihl FS-66 that I regularly still use to cut over an acre, this is unforgivable! This trimmer you’ve got here may last 2-3 years in the hands of someone who may only use it 5-10 times a year on a small lot. And then there’s things like my Stihl that just don’t die (thank God!)

My Stihl is 30 years old, I can’t kill it. Clean the exhaust port, foam filter, and that’s it. Same spark plug for over 10 years. It won’t die.

Worked as a warranty tech for TTI who makes this for years. When the first launched this model they had a major recall on every single one they sold, the engines would lock up and loose compression before they even touched dirt or grass. They initially had us installing short blocks and when that became too costly due to labor, they started sending us the power head assembly and we would just swap the shaft into the power head. By the way no upgrades or fixes were made they replaced the faulty short blocks with the same defective junk. They have started doing the same thing with Milwaukee power tools, they fail like crazy due to cheap electronics

They actually have leaf blowers that don’t have air filters too. A neighbor had a Hypertough brand leaf blower with no air filter from the factory. I couldn’t believe it especially on a leaf blower of all things!

My neighbor gave me one because he was going to hire a company to do his yard maintenance. After looking at it for maybe 5 minutes I pitched it in the garbage. Complete joke. Thanks for making this video so others don’t get scammed.👍

About 8 years ago I was given one with all the attachments brand new as a gift.. Used it about 5 times then starting issues. When I opened it up I though I lost the filter. Hi Steve, Cheap weed eaters are ridiculous. I have worked on many of those, Ryobi and Homelite style (because no other small engine mechanic will touch them). I can certainly say that they are really being cheap with these trimmers. To start, the clutch is 2 piece and the shaft side of the clutch is pressed into plastic. I did a repair where the customer needed a whole new $40 front shroud because of this. Its the same thing with the trimmer head. It is pressed into the shaft. On that same trimmer, when you would give it throttle, the head would wobble so much. It really goes to show you how cheap these weed eaters are. Thank you for all you do Steve. Yeah, I tried fixing some homelite and craftsman ones we have. 2/3 of them seal the crank case with a piece of plastic. They lasted a while but once they need new parts they're hard to find and it's easier to buy a new one.

Lately we need a "smoke" filter on the equipment. :P

You have a valid point about no air filter, but this device was manufactured in 2007! And your video was posted in 2023.

I’m not surprised by this. Remember back then when the gas powered push mowers had an oil drain plug? Todays newer models most of them don’t even have one. Manufacturers are telling us that oil doesn’t need to be changed! Unbelievable!

I am 65 and have been mowing lawns since I was 10. All equipment I can think of has always had some kind of filter even if it was just an oil bath type. I still buy the cheaper weed eaters, Toro, and they at least have a foam filter, but would like to get a Stihl someday.

One of my current pet peeves is (are) garden/yard tractor transaxles with no fill or drain ports, no means of checking fluid level. These transaxles must be removed from the unit, the fan removed, then single use plugs are finally accessible. Inspecting/replacing the filter requires bottom cover removal, but only when the unit is upside down. If the bottom cover is removed while in place in the unit, park brake and final drive components fall out and are impossible to re-install unless the trans is inverted (no, I didn't). Then there's the old sealant that must be tediously removed from a labyrinth of surfaces then oh so carefully re-applied. An older Simplicity tractor I worked on has transaxle drain plugs and an external reservoir. I was shocked at the amount of aluminum swarf present in the drain oil. Then, it wouldn't take oil through the reservoir until I found and opened a vent port threaded plug on top of the transaxle, below the fuel tank. I don't know if this still applies to newer Simplicitys, but every thing I took tools to on that oldie appeared well thought out from a serviceability aspect and fully functional and well fit for purpose. I've since bought a used, Craftsman branded Husqvarna where everything was the opposite of Simplicity. I've looked and looked and see no way to remove the fuel tank short of loosening the cowl and fenders. Transaxle mounting tabs were literally torn from the frame, AYP factory repair parts are readily available. The Factory KNOWS of the issue yet has neglected to address it on current models. I'm NEVER buying anything substantial that's Craftsman branded again, nor anything from Electrolux/Husqvarna and subsidiaries like Poulan.

My first trimmer was a gas ryobi, it gave me nothing but trouble and lasted about a year, I got rid of it and bought a shindawa which I still have and I use it all the time, I used to cut the grass in a cemetery and it was my favorite to trim around the headstones, it's the f230 the curved shaft one, I then purchased a reconditioned echo from home depot, they used to sell reconditioned mowers and other outdoor power equipment, I bought it in 2000 and it still runs perfect after all these years, the shindawa I bought new around 1996 and that still runs perfect, I advise anyone to not buy the cheap junk, they ask me how much is an echo or similar unit, they never want to pay the extra money so I tell them they're throwing away money because the cheap ones won't last, now of course they're pushing the battery ones so who knows.

I've had mine for 10yrs. Never any issues. But yeah, a bit of sponge wouldn't do any harm.

Steve, that air filter screen does a great job of keeping the motor from sucking in Hyundai's, couch cushions, and other lawn equipment that might be near it.

I have had an Echo 230 U for around 15 years and it works hard around the farm but still starts on the first pull every spring. The only problem I have ever had was the throttle cable rotted away. That was last weekend and I bought a new one for $12. This is a great machine. It even has an air filter!

Echo's are great. Here in the UK my dad has one of the old grey shred and vac blowers from 1997. It will still start and run with no issues.

I'm still using my Stihl weedeater FS280K from 1994, works perfectly. I have newer ones, but prefer this one... we dance while she sings!

I recently got a Homelite bandit Sx-135 from my neighbor for free and he found it in his garage and completely forgot about it. The fuel lines and purge bulb were dust and all the fuel in the tank was straight oil now. It was a 1996 model year. I replaced the whole fuel system. And I put gas into it and it stated immediately! After sitting for at least 8 years. I didn’t even have to buy a carburetor!!!!! They don’t make them like they used to! And it had an air filter!

I have one of these , and I cut some air filter material and made my own...cheap n cheerful, but mine is still running 5 years down the line , great video's Steve , love watching and saving money at the same time 👍

I've seen an 20 year old trimmer with a broken airfilter housing and it's just using a sock at least half of it's life. Even a local mechanic who went through it and replaced fuel hoses said there's no filter for it made anymore so the "sock method" will do.

The foam air filter on my brush cutter fell to pieces about ten years ago and it still works fine.

Love your channel, it's my go to whenever I have an issue. I just purchased a RYOBI a few weeks ago and then saw your video. I opened my cover and no filter! Then I flipped the cover over and it was attached there. To be fair, the newer one seems to have a filter. Thanks.

Steve I own this exact trimmer. I bought it because of the attachments that go with it. Every year at the beginning of the season I have to tear the carb apart and clean it or some years I just purchased a new carb. Now I know why. Will be buying something better. Still I like that I could switch from a trimmer to a cultivator. For the price I will buy two machines. Thanks for the info. Love your channel.

I see people posting on repair groups asking questions about how to fix these and when you tell them it’s not worth fixing they say it’s only because “you don’t know how to fix it” 🤣🙄

I was given one very similar as a non runner, got it working. The plastic grill was part of a detachable cover over the carb and I assumed the filter was missing but couldn't find a replacement, now I know why! I just sandwiched some filter material behind the cover as a bit of a bodge

There are so many different brands and makes to choose from it’s great that you gave a heads-up about the air filter on that particular make. I’ve had many different types from Stihl to Husqvarna and the one I like the best for the $ is the Echo SRM-225. It’s not the top of the line but if well maintained will last many years. I’m retired but do some landscaping work to keep busy. I have 2 of the Echos and alternate them. I run one with a full tank til it runs out then switch to the other. Never had an issue with either one. As long as you change the air filter and spark plug on a maintenance schedule they should last for years…

Echo SRM225 is an excellent machine imo. I bought one about 5-6 years ago. Has been fantastic. I recommend them to any customer not happy with what they have currently. Stihl customers too.

My Dad has an Echo SRM2450 that's 30-something years old and has done the work of >30 cheap-ass garbage strimmers (as we call weed-eaters here in the UK) and it's still going as strong as the first day he pulled the starter-cord (with Steve's help and advice, of course... 😁👍) -6 weeks ago it had got to the stage of not wanting to start, and then wouldn't tick-over or accelerate properly (due to the sh!tty E10 gas eating fuel-lines, the seal on the fuel tank and the carb diaphragms 😖) so I spent about £20 ($33.47 Canadian at today's exchange rates) on a new fuel tank cap, 18" of new fuel-lines, and a new carb, plug and air-filter, and it's running absolutely PERFECTLY again 😊👍 after I set-up the new carb, using Steve's video of course... 😉 I went to see him yesterday, and he was out in the paddock strimming along the post-and-rail fences, happy as can be 😁, telling me how he can't believe how well it's running after all these years without any care or attention 😮, but he's 81 now and sadly has dementia pretty-bad 😖💔😭 so he'd totally forgotten what I'd done to it, but when I gently reminded him about the new parts and the tune-up I'd done he was grinning like a kid on Christmas morning and getting really emotional about "How well I look after him", so THANK YOU STEVE 😊👍 for making a very old man SO FRIKKIN HAPPY 🥲 -YOU DA MAN 😁👍

The Weed Eater brand is owned by Husqvarna. They acquired the Weed Eater brand in 1986, when they purchased Emerson Electric.

I agree. Bought the same brand 10 years ago. It was hard to start and didn't last 2 years before it was scraped.

Yup: I got a Homelite 26cc straight shaft from big box. I have been using my top of line saw 50:1 MIX IN IT. 10 years. So far so good- no air filter. when it looses compression I will buy something good. Only use it a few hours a year.

I had one of the previous generation strimmers to that. It had an air filter, it still ate itself in about five years.

So why not go buy the cheapest foam element you can find and cut out a piece of it to fit over that hole and be done with it? The reason I even bother mentioning trying to remedy this is because I have two of these older Ryobi gas trimmers (both are model SS30) that DO have air filters, and despite being old, they run great. And aside from having had ethanol mixed gasoline run through them prior to me acquiring them, which has caused me to replace the fuel lines in both units, and the purge bulb in one, I've had no other issues with them. For a cheap string trimmer, I really like them. Best part? They were free to me because of rotted fuel lines. I've had them for 4 years now and they do just fine in my residential application. I also have a Black Max trimmer from Walmart, one year old, and honestly, it's not really any improvement over the Ryobis. Except that it's a little bit prettier because it's newer.

They just recently started this planned obsolescence trickery. If yours are older than 2017 or 18 you shouldn’t really have any issues like people are now experiencing with things like no air filter and sealed crank cases. Homelite now makes it impossible to change cylinder heads and rings. You get low compression it’s off to the dump

Hi Steve. This has nothing to do with this video, but I just wanted to say thank you. I watched one of your older vids way back whever about you working on a small air cooled 2 stroke outboard motor. Didn't even know those were a thing. Since then I started picking one up here and there. Working on them now & then when I get some free time. I'm an over the road truck driver and don't get much free time when I'm home. Working on these outboard motors in my garage has been a like a refreshing dose of peace & serenity. Way back in the beginning of high school I took a small engine mechanic class. And it all started coming back. Thanks for reigniting my spark. I now have 6 Sea Kings and an Eska. Two of which I just picked up the other day. Thanks again Buddy.

On the first day that I used my Makita blower I broke the filter housing. I tried to get it fixed under warranty but was refused because I broke it. I decided to use it without a filter and hope for the best. It is still working after 2 years daily use in my gardening business.

Lol does it reely matter. I seen snippers dropped of here that I have no idea what happened . Like just yesterday a staffers dad popped in and said can you re string my pull cord .( I replaced it last season) must of yanked on it till it let go. So after the repair I checked the fuel . Looked like muddy water ? Had another one stored in a shed . Brand new snipper was full of water in the tank … like no fuel !!! He said his shed leaks a bit when it rained .and all the ones ( small engines gear) that’s never clean , mouse nests , poor fuel , no oil I could go on and on lol rant dun. I bought a four stroke Ryobi trimmer, and it had a plastic mesh screen just like that, no real filter. The throttle cable broke and I needed it right away and couldn’t wait for it to be fixed so I bought another one just like it which actually had a foam, air filter and a redesign throttle cable but otherwise identical 4 cycle engine. Actually runs pretty good for a few minutes but they inherently have very poor oil control even if you keep them perfectly level but if you talk them or run that higher rpm for too long, they start burning oil excessively and smoking. They are made for the homeowner that trims very very infrequently and very small jobs. Hi, since button a new Stihl Kombi motor. Lol

The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth sir! I'll just stick with my old Shindaiwa that I've had for about 30 plus years. It runs great and it even still has the original spark plug in it. T27 I think is the model number?

Ryobi used a lot of different engines in their string trimmers. My CS30 has a Homelite (Textron?) 30cc engine. I've had zero issues with, start easy and performs well. Can't say that for my Echo SRM225, and yes I had to remove the tamper proof screw to get at the main jet.

Been using them for years, and all have filters. Tbh, they’ve outperformed some higher end models, and lasted much longer. The problem I ran into was the “California” settings, set so bad it won’t even crank. If I ever buy another, I’ll make sure it cranks before I leave with it.

Hey Steve ,as a mech tech of Many years, here is my take.... they skimped on the filter on purpose!!! The m/c will last a shorter lenght of time and the consumer will be forced into buying another m/c. I have seen this for a long time now , these companies are run by accountants and nothing is built to last. Its BUILD BACK WORSE!!!! for profit!

I see some people talking about making their own filters. The interesting thing is that carbs can be set to function with a certain amount of resistance, so I wonder if adding a filter could make a trimmer run too rich.

They still sell those Ryobi's on the other side of the Atlantic. Ryobi gas tools no longer exist in the UK and dealer/parts support isn't great anymore. Ryobi only sell the battery tools now through the box stores we have in the UK.

I once had the newer style Ryobi gas trimmer model ry251ph. Still exists today only in a curved or straight shaft. Had one for 5 years ran good until it started having carb problems, put a new aftermarket carb in it and nothing. And then just threw it away. Think I’ll stick with my old Toro trimmer that’s 20 years old, my Stihls and my husqvarna.

Every time I get one of those Ryobi‘s they don’t have a filter on my bench. I always take those things off and put a regular filter assembly on it and give it back to the customer with an upgraded filter assembly. You’re right those are junk.

i bought ryobi in the late 90's early 00's for my lawn business as a kid and they held up for years. looks like things have changed.

Except this is a close to 20 year old ryobi - the build date in the video is 2007

Its the perfect trimmer I will be using after I blow the snow off my driveway.

The other thing I’ve questioned are the plastic crankcases and cylinder heads on some blowers, etc. I had a plastic Craftsman fail within a year. I believe MTD made the blower for Sears.

I agree however as someone with one of these things I had carb issues out of the box(not just an adjustment) it been quite some time ago don't remember exactly what it was but after getting that resolved this thing has chewed on Alot of crap and still starts pretty well. I guess you could say runs better now than when new (since it wouldn't run when new) lol

Always enjoy your videos Steve. But I've had a Ryobi multi weedeater for over ten years and I've never had a single issue with it. I'm not contradicting you just saying my experience has been just great.

Long time watcher here.. I've a vid request... Ive recently bought a backpack strimmer that uses a flex shaft conduit. Can these conduits be stripped down, so I can regrease them and if so how do I do it? Much appreciated, love all your vids 🙏 🙌

They do that so they'll wear out faster and you have to buy another one. Lovely world we live in. Nice video Steve, hopefully people will examine their next purchase for a filter before buying.
