This was one of their 'quarantine' series (done individually during Covid). Others in the series include "Diamond Dreams", "Down to the Honkytonk", "Flowers on the Wall", "The Gambler", "Meet in the Middle", "Moonshine", "Sunday Best", "I Swear", "Make You Feel My Live" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". Tim's not moving much 'cuz he's standing in a boat in his brother-in-law's back yard.

Every shanty can be sung differently, since back in the day they where only really shared by word of mouth. It's often hard to find one that everyone agrees one, but also means each time you hear one it will be sung differently.

My favorite thing about this Home Free Sea Shanty Medley is to NOTICE that the beat boxing beats go faster and faster with each next song to give the sound of an old fashioned tall ship or pirate ship sailing faster and faster over the waves of the ocean!! This is one of my FAVORITE Home Free videos! Adam Chance brilliantly convinced the other Home Free band mates to do this Sea Shanty Medley because Adam Chance loves sea shanties! If you have not seen it yet, Adam Chance and Home Free have a NEW Sea Shanty video that was written by Adam Chance and is the soundtrack to a new pirate ship video game! The thing to keep in mind is that the new Home Free pirate Sea Shanty video is not acapella as they use a couple of real instruments but the video, singing and the music is just as BRILLIANT as Home Free is same as usual! :) Enjoy! With Home Free tying up the ending like a sailor's knot tying the other songs in the medley together, Home Free also did this with the "Butts Remix Medley"

Thanks for your reaction! How good are these guys? The fun & energy in this is infectious. This was done during quarantine so none of the guys were even together. The editing of this was great & was done in the Tik Tok style. Love all the guys parts, with Tim's rumbling bass underlying it all. And Adam's beatboxing is phenomenal as always including sea swells & castanets. Amazing how he increased the tempo from one song to another.

I think it's so funny that you think you have to apologize for your crazy tangents and ADHD moments and general adorableness. You were right in that those who have been here for two and a half years "know what to expect," but Mortius, that's THE REASON we're still here after all that time. We're here and we keep watching BECAUSE of you being you - passionate and knowledgeable while still being quirky and relatable. I get overwhelmed by large amounts of notifications, so I VERY rarely subscribe to any KZread channels - right now I have four total: VP, Geoff, Home Free, and YOU. I have a grand total of two Discords I am in right now - VP's and YOURS. As for the future of your channel, you should do what makes YOU happy. But if what makes you happy is making dorky, rambly reaction videos, that's what we signed up for! And I'm sure I speak for many, many people when I say that your channel's "expiration date" is total BS. We're here for you and your content, and as long as you continue to make it, in whatever form makes you feel happy and fulfilled, we will continue to watch.

In order: 1) Yes "Drunken Sailor" is a folk song/work song, so there are probably as many different versions, as there once were shanty-men leading the crew in a stamp-and-go shanty to raise the sails on a massive Man-o'War. 2) The shanty band "The Longest Johns" made a massive community sing-along video of the whole song of "Leave Her Johnny"with nearly 500 of their fans singing along on the chorus. The video premiered December 30. 2020. (because it too is a folk song, the lyrics are a bit different than Chance sings). You can see it here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/anqj2ZhqitbUYtY.html (not really in your reaction alley, but you might like it) 3) Introspection happens at 11pm on a hot summer night when you can't sleep. Plenty of modern verses for Drunken Sailor as well. "Put him in a bed with Elizabeth Taylor", "Log into his Gmail and change his password", etc. It's a song that lends itself incredibly well to improvisation, and so people do and have done probably since the song's inception.

On drunken sailor there are roughly 15 “official versions” with another 50+ common versions, it is one of the best examples of groups tailoring a song to fit their levels of darkness, humor, era, and theme. I tend to be a fan of the older, darker grittier versions that were closer to the original pirate based variants, which list the ways to kill the sailor as he “sleeps”, with everyone fading out/away and switching to a new lead proposing a new way to off the king’s man that drifted into their part of town for a drink For example: “ What will we do with a drunken sailor, oh what would we do with a drunken sailor, yes what could we do with that drunken sailor ear-lie in this mornin I say tip his hat and sew it unda, tip his hat and sew it unda? Yes, tip his hat and …sew …it …unda …ear-lie-in-this-morn-ning Hey ho! An up ‘e rises, heyho up ye rises, hey, ho, up they rises ear-lie in this mor-oning How bouts dip his head an hold ‘im under? Dip his head and ‘old im unda? Yeah, dip his head and hold him unda…. Earlie in dis mornin Hey-yo! Oh up he rises… “ And similar (slit ‘is throat with a rusty razor was a common and favorite one)

As with most folk songs that predate copyright law, yes, there are multiple versions of those lyrics. "What shall we do with a drunken sailor?" "What do we do with a drunken sailor?" "What should we do with a drunken sailor?" "What can you do with a drunken sailor?" And then there are all the various verses that it has accumulated. "Shave his chest with a rusty razor" has always been my favorite.

You've got tons of great analyses on this channel that have taught me so much, so even if you do decide to scale back releases for a bit I'm so happy to have the videos you've shared with us so far. I kind of consider this channel to have a lot of the definitive acapella analyses for a lot of the various groups, so when you covered some beatbox stuff as well I was so happy some of the best beatbox routines got to be highlighted on the channel along with so many good acapella groups. Hopefully its just a temporary lull and eventually we'll see some exciting new groups or collaborations re-invigorate the channel. Answers - I seem to remember Tim saying around the time it came out that the sound at the beginning was Darren Rust, their producer, hitting a suitcase, though I may be remembering wrong. While the TikTok craze inspired them to do the video, Chance has been a serious shanty fan for many years, so he may have introduced a less familiar one to the mix. Rob's mustaches in this are a work of art, Tim is standing in a boat in his brother in law's backyard, Austin already had the pirate outfit (and the sword) and I suspect Rupp had great fun digging out some of his D&D props (or finding the perfect excuse to buy new ones on the HF budget. :-) )

Well I’m among those surprised that you hadn’t gotten this yet, but it was a lot of fun! About your LARP costume, I know you just said you wanted the pirate shirt not to be a pirate, but there’s a KZreadr Nicole Rudolph who’s a dress historian and has a couple of videos about what historical pirates might have worn, what each piece of the clothing is called and such so you might find some terms to help you search if you’re going to buy parts of your costume or where to find patterns if you want to make it yourself. It’s also just really interesting. She also has a lot of videos on historical shoemaking which are fascinating, especially when she gets to the part where she’s filmed herself making the shoes. Anyway, hope you have fun LARPing!

I'd love to join you on Patreon, but I'm unemployed, stuck at home with health issues, and it's really been messing with my emotional health. Then a few months ago, after watching a VoicePlay video, your video was recommended. I'd never watched a music reaction video before, but I saw the pink tie and matching pink headphones, and I said to myself, "This looks like a FUN guy. Let's see what he has to say." (I think it was "Dragonborn Comes.") You, Mortius, started me on a journey through the music reactors of KZread. Groups like Home Free, VoicePlay, PTX, Bass Gang, and now I'm finally getting into Voctave (thanks to so many reactors showcasing them) all give me joy, and music reactors like you bring me smiles, laughs, a new appreciation for these songs, as well as beautiful memories of music classes back in college. (Sometimes, I'm right there with Mason, shouting at my screen "You mean THIS chord!!!" Haha! It's okay, music theory was hard.) You really should be proud of this channel, the community you have built, the education you bring, and the random people who you rescue from a colorless world with your pink tie and bright personality. "Leave Her Johnny" is a great shanty song. It highlights the importance of being a bit superstitious as a sailor. There can be many reasons for a ship running badly. Some will say it is luck, but bad management often makes their own bad luck. So when the ship has been running badly for too long, the smart thing is to not re-enlist while in port and go crew on a different ship, perhaps one that doesn't seem to have so much trouble. Also, directly criticizing the captain is not a smart move while on ship, so it is better to just blame it on bad luck and move on. So you get the politics and pragmatics of being a "superstitious" sailor. Some people will think the song is about leaving his girl and going back on ship, but all the lyrics are about bad trips on ship so it is time to leave a losing gig, thus the "her" is the ship. For example "shipped it green" means the ship starting out the trip crashing through the waves, constantly flooding the deck. That is unpleasant and dangerous. It implies they have crowded the time window and perhaps started the run too early or too late in the season and thus inviting lots of bad weather/currents during what should have been the easy part of the trip. Once again, a management choice that doesn't really have much consideration for the crew's safety. You don't have to criticize the policies and choices of a captain or the ship's owner/manager. They'll get the message when it's hard to get a full crew. Boycotts are very old.

You are correct, for the past 60 years I've known it as "do we do" not "will we do." Although as these songs were passed in an oral tradition instead of written it is likely that different wording was used in different locales. Still this is the first I've heard will instead of do, and do just seems more grammatically correct.

I am sure that with the long history of these shanties variations in the wording are inevitable.

I was blown away when Adam started with the castanets. My mom and dad bought a pair in Spain when he was stationed in France from 1958-1959, and we all played with them when we were kids. Here is a link to a short video of someone playing them: kzread.infoq4vV4CxV_LU?feature=share

Suprised that keen ear of yours did not catch Rupp's castinets in the last shanty medley (Santa Ana)...priceless anf genius on how he intwines that in the beat, :) Excellent reaction and analysis..looking forward to more.

Great you got round to this eventually - and got so excited about it! 😆 Seems to be multiple versions of "Drunken Sailor" - I've always known it as "What SHALL we do with a drunken sailor..." Lots of versions of "leave her Johnny" around on KZread - don't know about TikTok as it's not something I follow 🙂 Love Adam Rupp's castanet sounds in "Santiana" Adam Chance was apparently the instigator of this as he loves shanties and his voice is great in this. Also love the ending where they've mashed them all together!

If you haven't seen this info yet, it IS that song, and it IS styled towards a tiktok video at first.....however also to note, the game developer UBISOFT heard this and reached out to Home Free to do Skull and Bones, which is a song for their upcoming game of the same name. Chance wrote/arranged and did lead on that, as well as Austin playing the Mandolin....other than that...there are 2 versions, the lyrical version which is longer, and the Live version which was done at an UBISOFT event.

There are multiple versions as well as verses, that not everyone uses. I first learned to sing Drunken Sailor when my dad was stationed in Scotland. The way I learned, we sang, "hooray and up she rises" instead of, "way hey and up she rises".

Are there different version of Drunker Sailor? Yes, it's called "folk drift". Everyone has their own slightly misremembered version of shanties, folk songs and so on. I always sang it as "What _shall_ we do with the drunken sailor", just to throw another version into the mix.

This was such a great reaction! And I had forgotten that you hadn't covered this, so it was fun to see it again with "fresh" eyes. I would love for you to cover Mitch Grassi's Messer videos, but he has one which is very much not family friendly, but it sure is a plot twist! Great music, though!

I don't think it's possible for there to be a definitive version of a sea shanty. There might be versions that are widest spread or have the most documentation attesting their history, but given the way sea shanties developed I think it is totally possible that there were as many versions of a given shanty as there were bosuns singing them. I arranged Santiana at one point and I think I found four or five versions that were equally widespread with vastly different lyrics. There are also a number of shanties that were literally designed so that each sailor could improvise a verse with a repeating chorus that didn't change for as long as they needed the song to go. They were work songs designed to synchronize movements across the crew, so variety in content was important to maintain interest.

You are already unique so your channel automatically has a much longer shelf-life. You don't need to worry about having things dry up in just a few more months. Just keep being your authentic self in your reactions, you will be able to keep going as long as you want. You have basically done what Lindsey Sterling has done, you both have carved your own niche into the internet. Like Lindsey, you are here to stay as long as you want. :)
