All great period Muscle. Cobra Jet is legendary for a reason! It's interesting how the current, soon to end horsepower wars breed cars so much faster, yet run cleaner, get 50-70% better fuel milage, better handling etc. seems that once we survived the 80's malaise era, from the 90's forward it just got better and better. The cars will never look as good as the best late 60's early 70's though. I drive a Jaguar Super V8 that puts out 390 HP 399 pound/feet torque and does 4.9 o-60 runs with a reclining rear seat, window shades, screens, DVD Player separate AC condenser for rear seat heat and AC, heated/cooled seats, al wrapped in leather and burled walnut opulence that would beat every car in this video, but, unfortunately will never look or sound like these cars from the day. I was 10 in 1970, but drove a Lincoln Mark III at 17, 365 HP, 500 Lb/Feet torque, with Limited slip diff, that was not 1/4 miler, but made nasty intake noise while tearing up 6 rear tires in the 1ts month I had it, lol.

What makes me sad is the fact I built a tribute 68 XR -7 GT-E 20 years ago, just never completed it before selling everything. I used a 67 Police Interceptor block, CJ heads, solid lifter cam setup with a 596 lift with all forged internals and high flow pumps etc… had a toploader ready to install with it and sold everything, car, engine and all parts… even the tech at Jezel who balanced the internals commented how he would love to see this dyno… big regret but we all have them. I went back to a 71 Roadrunner like I had my senior year in HS. I still have it but that Cougar would have been a hell of an animal…

I have a 427 Windsor which has 550 HP. No one is going to make me believe that the 428 only has 335 HP.

One of the car magazines back in the day pulled a low mileage 428 CJ out of a car and put it on a dino and it made 405 hp but I cannot remember the tq number but it was a lot more than 440 lbs . I have had 4 CJ cars and a Couger GTE 7 liter with the 427 rated at 390 hp . The Couger was the fastest of the bunch !

They (FORD) definitely hid the true numbers… it always makes me laugh when they talk about the 335 hp while describing them at auctions but they know… just going off the stated factory literature

They lied on hp for insurance proposes. I had a 69 428 CJ R code mach1 and a 67 mustang coupe S code 390gt. Both left you feeling like your driving biggest badass on the road unless something real special pulled up along side ya.

They built an FE in NHRA Stock Trim and a 427 ci Windsor and the FE was 535 hp Stock Legal and in the car ran 10.20 1/4 miles to the Windsor at 505 with the best heads at the time. The 428 CJ FE made 515 ft lbs and the Windsor made 496. It ran 10.69 in the 1/4. This was considered a fair fight and that the 3 inch main Windsor with the Smaller bore long stroke made the difference. This was back in the 1990s , I think that the Windsor is better now than then. But the old bruiser still packs a punch. One thing that surprised the testers was that the FE was much lighter than expected. I still love the old brutes! 😂.

The mighty CJ would bolt right into a 66-70 Falcon with instant 12 second passes @ will. I converted 3 back in the last century. They were much quicker with a few mods and a good tune. Those engines made well over 500 when turned up to make peak power in 7000 rpm range. I shifted one of mine @ 7500 using the optional CJ camshaft,3x2 intake & good ignition system. Falcons are fun! They are a much more sound and better car than the fairlane or mustang.

You flat out can’t compare the performance of cars from back in the day based on magazine test times. The magazines routinely super tuned some cars more than others and also routinely modified cars. The weather conditions on the days the cars were tested also make a huge difference. You also need to know the car options. Rear gearing? Auto vs 4 speed? Lastly who was driving the car? Some mags employed professional racers who obviously could get much better results than any magazine writer. And as far as that Cougar GTE I would bet most anything that the car was modified with slicks and open headers to run that ET.

Not a single SCJ tested which came with a lower rear end ratio which denotes it would be faster
