This song is on the album “Let’s Dance” and your next Bowie song should be the single “Let’s Dance”. Stevie Ray Vaughan was the session guitarist on the entire record, but you can really identify SRV on that particular song.

David Bowie was doing what Prince does 20 years before Prince. He was the cutting edge, he shocked and appalled his fans with every new look, and to complement the look, he had to have a new sound to go with it. At least that's how it seemed to me. Under Pressure and Space Oddity are my two favorite David Bowie songs, and they couldn't be more different!

This is one of the FEW songs that I could listen to more than once in a short period of time. It just gets you to think in a fun way. It's one of the best dance songs out there IMO. The original song had 3 sax players and one with the trumpet. The Live Aid version had two drummers. It's so musically fun that it's hard to tell the difference.

I prefer the term shape shifter to describe Bowie over the word chameleon because a chameleon blends into its environment & Bowie did anything BUT blend in. When you look at images of him in his different personas & styles you get completely different energies / vibes from him that makes you feel like you are looking at completely different people (his distinctive eyes give him away). Rob & Amber, you have to delve more into his lengthy catalog to see this better for yourselves, and I do hope you do! 👍✌😁❤

Amen! And go BACK if you want to witness the birth of an entirely different, ummm not only genre (Glam Rock) but also the paving stones for the various persona to follow - Allad Insane, Halloween Jack, White Plastic Soul with Luther Vandross & Ava Cherry, The Thin White Duke, The DJ. He created and gave away so many styles or genres of music for generations and was completely profound and influential. Bowie was not a chameleon. He was a shy songwriter who acted out as other personas in order to sing in front of people. Much later in his career when he became himself, David Robert Jones. Yea, yes Space Oddity, but the next one should be Starman - Top of the Pops, 1972. The World had NEVER seen anything like it before. You really will have your mouths open. Bowie made it okay to be different. Men and women alike still weep over his loss. I was blessed and highly favored. I saw him 11 times starting in '74.

Heroes, rebel rebel, suffragette city, space oddity and the Jean genie are just a few I would recommend listening to. The guy had a lot of good songs. While I’m thinking about Bowie I’ll relay this info. Although he might have had more popular songs, my favorite is “Heroes” because of the rebellious tone it strikes. Not to mention the Tesla Roadster floating forever through space (around Mars and the sun) with the "starman" inside and 'Space Oddity' looping on the stereo. I thought the whole event was going to come off as some cheesy publicity stunt, but watching the car drift out of the Falcon Heavy rocket to the soundtrack of 'Life On Mars' with the over-the-shoulder-cam view of the earth through the windshield and "DON'T PANIC" on the dashboard display was incredibly moving. So much symbolism.

What made me a little sad is that he said later this was his least favorite of his albums because he felt he purposely sold out with it. The other side of that is that this may be some of his most accessible, universally appealing music. It sold huge, so he made a lot of people happy with it...including me. When Bowie was making the movie, "The Man Who Fell to Earth", they filmed at Fenton Lake, north of Jemez Springs, NM. I was living in a travel trailer (my husband was working on a geothermal rig there) and he had heard of the filming. We drove up to the lake and hubby got out to ask/see what was going on. We were parked next to a van and as I was sitting there waiting the door opened up and I had eye contact with what looked like an alien with white skin (paint) all over him. I think he was naked. But he smiled at me and the door quickly shut. My husband came back and told me Bowie was in the van! The movie was interesting.

Interesting Bowie story to me, we were never fans and without MTV we wouldn't even know him. In 1990 my older brother went to get tickets to Aerosmith Pump tour and they stood in a line of 1,000 others for hours wondering why the 2nd line only had a few people in it, they finally asked people "What's that other line for"? And they replied "Oh that's the Aerosmith line"! So then they asked laughing "Well who is this line for"? And the strangers looked at them like "Really"? "This is Bowies' line, duh" I knew then I had missed out haha

"Not the thing that floats..." HILARIOUS! David Bowie was so influential in ways we take for granted now. For instance: You recognized some Prince vibes, and that's one of the things about Bowie: He introduced androgyny to pop music. The New York Dolls, Kiss, and Twisted Sister all were okay with wearing makeup; Bowie was first. He made it fashionable. (And I'd say Bowie was influenced by Lou Reed there...and of course Bowie produced Lou Reed's earliest solo records.) To say Bowie was chameleon-like is also spot-on. He changed personas the way most of us change clothes. For a long time in the early 1970s, many thought his name was Ziggy Stardust, a character he played on his breakthrough album. (React to ANY song on that album.) It's a very deep dive to fully appreciate David Bowie, because his influence was that deep and profound. The thing is: he would break new ground and others would enter that realm and make it popular... all after Bowie had already moved on to "the next thing." His album "Low" is nowhere near as "fun" as any of his other albums. And yet, it's so perfect. I would have to describe Bowie like this: "In order to understand 'D', you have to understand 'A,' B,' and 'C.' And you'll never understand 'E' until you know 'A, B, C, and D.' The catch is...you'll never fully appreciate 'A' until you've learned all about 'E'." Does that make any sense? You can appreciate any of Bowie, but wow, you cant get the big picture right away. Bowie's roots extend so far out you have to circle back to him to understand what you thought you already knew. As I say, he's a deep dive. But very much worth it.
