Favorite John Lennon Quote: "When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy'. They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life."

The absolutely heartbreaking part of this beautiful, beautiful song is that, just four months after recording this wonderful declaration of how much he was looking forward to his journey with his son, John Lennon was robbed of that journey by the monster who killed him. But at least he had the opportunity to release this for his son to hear and know how much his father loved him.

@@EarmonkeyMusic The comment was about Sean, who he obviously was a better father to, and you brought up Julian just to say he wasn't good to him. I find that strange to add. I have heard what Julian has said, that's what I meant by not perfect. I'm not trying to argue, I just didn't understand why you brought Julian and John's relationship into it.

@@EarmonkeyMusic Julian was unfortunate this is true. John was far from perfect. He and Julian at this exact time were starting to get close. He even talks about it on the movie Imagine. John also wasn’t completely absent from Julian’s life completely. First 10 years of his life there is different periods you can see video of Julian with him. I think Julian would prefer for people not to keep digging at this all the time. He is even close with Sean. The media tried to give people a different view but Julian and Sean are together quite often he told a reporter at his Art show last year.

John realized that he hadn't been around as much as a father should be for his 1st son, Julian. He'd been born as The Beatles became world famous amid the Beatlemania whirlwind. So later, when Sean was born John stayed home to be a full-time dad & house husband while Yoko handled their business matters. It was 5 years of bliss for John. Then he & Yoko went back into the studio & made a new album together, including this song. They were coming home from the studio when John was shot at the entrance to their apartment building. He had just turned 40. It was covered on the news & in the press as if it had been a Presidential assassination. Such was the impact John & The Beatles had had culturally, on everything from music & fashion to the peace movement. Millions of people around the world reeled from the shock of it. Those of us who grew up with The Beatles music still feel the loss. John was a genius who gave a lot to us with his immense talents. We're happy though that John's last years were serene & happy.💙🌿💚

Good, accurate synopsis Deborah. It is really hard to explain what a crushing impact it had on so many of us when Lennon was murdered. And while true that this song is so sweet & a reflection of a parent's love for his son...for me it always a sad reminder that John was murdered just a month after this song was released.

The song is considered one of the best songs ever written. I lost all respect for John many years ago but it was still a tragedy when he was murdered. I will always have great respect for Paul McCartney for being there for Julian and writing Hey Jude to comfort him. Count the number of people in the word that can sing along to Hey Jude (in it's entirety) now count the number that can sing one line of this song. After my oldest boy was killed, I was encouraged by my grief counselor to either journal or write some poetry. I'd never taken time to do any kind of writing. But I wrote a poem I titled "Beautiful Brown-Eyed Boy". I worked on it for months, writing and editing it over and over again -- crying the entire time. It helped so much to get the grief out. I love this little song (which was obviously written for Sean Lennon).

This song is off John's final album, "Double Fantasy". Though he could not have known it at the time, he got a chance to leave a farewell song, this one, for his son Sean and "Woman" for his wife Yoko on it. They are two of my favorites. People often forget that he also wrote a lullaby for his first son, Julian, when the Beatles were still together. It is called "Good Night" which is the final track on the so-called 'White Album.' That song was sung by Ringo because John was too macho at the time to allow himself to be heard singing it, but of course, he was not too macho to write it.

The lyrics are very different. There's no praise for Julian in Good Night; it's a generic lullaby. In Beautiful Boy, he mentions Sean by name at the end. Julian's name is not included in Good Night. It might be a lullaby he sang to Julian and even wrote to sing to Julian, but it was recorded while he was having an affair while still married to Cynthia his first wife.

Ironic that each boy got 5 years of his time. Julian was 5 when John left the family and Sean was 5 when John was murdered. Of course, John was a stay at home father when Sean was a child so he actually spent more time with Sean as he was at the height of his career & touring the globe when Julian was small.

John wasn't able to be with his older son Julian much when he was younger because he was on the road with the Beatles & then moved to New York & they were an ocean apart. When he had Sean he wasn't touring so he was able to be home with him all the time. It makes me so sad that John was killed before he could watch Sean grow up & be there for him & reconnect with Julian. The relationship he had with Julian mirrored his relationship with his Mother. She wasn't really there for him while he was growing up & as soon as they started to connect she passed away & he was just starting to reconnect with Julian when he got killed. By the way, the place is looking awesome! Good to have y'all back. Thanks for the videos of the baby & his awesome big sisters. And thanks for the smiles.
