THIS WAS A MESSED UP EXHAUST FAN SERVICE CALL

This was a messed up service call to say the least, it was pouring rain and I made an electrical repair but in the end it all worked out.

I was an electrician for 35 years Chris. I used to have to work in that weather a lot!! My tools would get rusted and I'd always keep a can of WD-40 with me to help clean my tools. It really sucked working in that kind of weather. I feel for you man. I really do. Keep up the vids when you can. I love watching them!

@@bentlikeitsmaker - chrome or nickel plate if possible, but a lot of the things like pliers and cutters just can't seem to be made that way, even with the cutting edges exposed. I have some really aggressive metal polish that I found works beautifully on rust, and helps protect from future rusting.

I remember once when the bossman didn't want to call in for a disconnect/reconnect and had us change out a service hot and the master electrician of 35 years an old timer was splicing the hot legs from the mast back in it was raining and he said he was starting to feel a tingle from being grounded out while he was reconnecting the service drop. Those days are done now with the smart meters. Once you pull one, it has a button on the back that releases and it has enough charge in a huge capacitor inside it will radio tamper mode back to power company. Once time I pulled a smart meter to replace a service and about the time we were going to finish, a power company service truck pulled up and busted us.

I learn so much from this channel that I subscribed from the first video I watched. I was in the trades for a few years before being laid off and moved on to worse things. I wish I would have stuck it out but that's the hand you play and you don't always win. I get comfort over learning something I wanted to do as an apprentice electrician. I was told to broaden my horizon with my skills because one day I might be plunging out an old ladies toilet to installing video surveillance equipment and computer network cable install.

The junction box that was there could have been better installed. The box used the bottom and the top openings for the plastic conduit, that didn't work well, the stress caused the conduit to eventually break. A better approach is to use a junction box with two holes on the bottom (even if you turn the box on its side), HomeDepot has several outdoor boxes that will work, 2-gang are much better, and PVC is better - double box, gasket and cover are about $11 retail. In a situation like this, Never run the **looped** flexible conduit vertically or out the side, run it out the bottom in a gentle loop up to the fan - the wires and conduit will last much longer.

What is an average time to wash the condenser coils on those Lennox units in the background? I just cleaned 3 of them (very dirty and greasy) and it took me a lot longer than the office budgeted for. I didn’t look up the tonnage, but mine has 4 condenser fans.

I think part of the issue with, especially recently, poor view count might be because it's what I call Apple Season. Or trech release season in general. So the algo is going to recommend iPhone, iPad, iMac, Macbook content to everyone, and not HVACR content. I have subscribe set, and it looks like my notifications are set to "Personal". I see all your videos in my feed, although not always at the front page. And if I can't watch one right away I'll throw it onto Watch Later lest KZread do that thing where it disappears forever the next time I refresh. Thanks for another great upload.

I'm starting to see new kitchens installing sofisticated touch screen exhaust fan controls with VFD fans and built in energy saving goals. Temperature Sensors in the ducts that adjust the motor speeds. The cooks hate this stuff and it inevitably ends up bypassed and running at full speed because it just doesn't work and is too expensive to spend hours talking to tech support when you have a smokey kitchen full of angry staff ready to walk off the job. You always talk about the "big picture" sometimes I think all these high tech high efficiency schemes don't take the big picture into account when they are designed and engineered. I always look at our scrap bin at the shop and notice it's comprised of high tech high efficiency appliances that are average about 8-10 years old and 30+ year old equipment that really lasted a lifetime but never much in between. Not to mention the old equipment was largely comprised of highly recyclable steel and the new stuff is a cocktail of plastic, foam and other things I'm sure just end up in landfills.
