This was a bad idea...! Trans Euro trail in Montenegro nearly got me (S2:E23 P1)

My most difficult day on the Trans Euro trail so far. With a fully loaded Tenere 700 motorcycle trying to traverse loose gravel and almost vertical climbs really tested my skills. I got myself stuck on a tricky section of a curvy road between two mountains, but Montenegro is so beautiful I forget how tired I am.

Must have been a warm day too. I've gotten heat sick and it sucks. In the past it's been hard for me to make the simple decision to just stop and take a break, hydrate, have a snack, before I get too hungry/thirsty/winded, then push on. I have found that it also helps me in my frame of mind when I do. Now in my 60s I am STILL LEARNING. LOL. Eat, ride, hydrate, ride. Get stuck, have to push that Beast? Afterwards take a break. Get that energy and O2 level back. Dizziness should not be ignored. I have had to walk beside a bike in 1st gear to get up a hill before and was wore out like I had played football all day. Silver lining time is when you realize, "I did it!" That and you are now at a higher level of experience than before. All The Best!✌

OMG Kenneth. That's a difficult track for any one. Sharp turns and big loose rocks in combination with steep uphill are the hardest obstacles to maneuver with heavy ADV bikes. Remember you are in high altitude. Fatigue will come quicker than normal. Keep fighting!! Keep on!! Norwegian Vikings doesn't call it quits. 💪 💪

3 Things I have to say: dehydration (&Food), momentum and gaze guidance. I've seen all kind of bikes with all kind of loads on these tracks. I still hear your words to Jonathan when you crossed the Pyrenees. So, no bitching or complaining. Gather your courage and just do it. It's a tough road though, but you've done that before. A little faster and looking further ahead and it's a lot easier. I guess you drank and ate too little wich could lead to major problems.

Hi Ken' it's not above your ability, you're just transitioning to the next level my freind. That's how we all gain experience. This looks almost on the same level as the Sanni Pass to Losoto in Africa before they repaired the track over the last year or so. You are tho' doing great and it's no hardship to take the luggage off to lift the bike after a fall, even better to at high altitudes. Roll on part two 🤗😉

By the way you should carry some energy bars or at leaste sugar (dexoenergen) for those times you feel tired and have no more energy. Efforts take a lot of your body so you have to fill it up with fuel just like your bike. Ride safe and take a break oince in a while.

So beautiful, but yeah, very challenging trail for certain! I am a member of the IBA (Iron Butt Association) and in my 60s have completed 3 approved Saddle Sore 1000 rides. Almost always when I do real long distance rides, whether for the IBA or not, I get about 750 miles in and start to question my sanity. I wonder what I think I am doing, I have nothing to prove to anyone, including myself. I have been riding bikes since I rode my first minibike age 8. I love to ride, but sometimes, when I am tired, sore, spent, numb, frustrated, etc, etc, and etc, I often think I am nuts. Then I complete and sigh, and yell, "Oh yeah, man, the old fart still has it going on!!!" Hahaha

Good job. It’s okay to search (and find) your limits, but remember a few basic rules to make it a bit easier on yourself. I speak from experience when I eventually fell and broke my ankle in the middle of nowhere riding the ACT Italy. Make sure you have water and high energy food with you, and don’t forget to stop every now and then to actually drink and eat it. And the bike (I also ride a T7) is capable of making it through insane terrain, you only need to give it some basic speed and balance. So look further ahead, keep your eyes on where you want to go, and keep momentum going. A bit more speed also makes it easier to keep your balance. And if you can’t avoid a deep trench or a piece of rock, just trust your bike and stay on the throttle with your eyes on the horizon. Your T7 will not let you down. I am not so much lecturing you as I am myself, cause riding like that takes courage and I would not have broken my ankle if I had done a better job and just practise what I just preached above. So keep it up, you’re doing great. And your army officer was right. You made picking up your bike look mighty easy! 😉👍

You should be able to see from where the route lays on a topographical map how steep it will be, therefore know what routes to avoid...look back on the topographical map for the route you just did and train your mind to be able to spot the really steep bits by noticing where the route crosses the contour lines at a right or sharp angle...that will be a steep section...the closer the contour lines are from each other the steeper it will be. Where the route goes parallel to the contour lines the track will be flatter. Carry less load on the bike will help too.
