When comparing cars of this class, it basically all boils down to styling cause both have a ride like floating on a cloud with any option one could think of back in the day. No one bought these cars for their performance like 1/4 mile and 0-60 times or to toss them through the twisties. The were built for absolute comfort like driving your couch down the freeway. Personally, I like the Lincoln as I think it just looks better but both are the epitome of North American comfort and luxury cars.

Totally agree these were to of the biggest cars offered from GM and ford I like the Lincoln more and I’m with you it comes down to preference (the Lincoln was sort of a basement entry level didn’t have a lot of options aside from leather seats, the vent windows are my favorite Lincoln feature and didn’t have those all that in mind I’d still take the Lincoln)

My stepmother had a bright gold Mark V, with crushed velour seats. I think it was the Cartier edition. It was the best car I ever rode in, and my friend had a 76 Eldo. My Dad bought a 78 Mark V which he passed on to me.

I think there was a armrest in rear as option CB radio all features are car didn’t have.. I want to do all the designer series of the mark v as well as bicentennial edition of the Cadillac

A bastard with absolutely no hope of competing- FYI When the manager of Lincoln specified what the mark 3 should be most of you are not aware of this- he specified as such; “I want a thunderbird and a Jaguar combined FYI How did you thing the CADILLAC was more expensive? The seats do look like plush leather couches that' I have sat on before too, on the other hand, the Lincoln seats look very comfortable also, and it is an elegant looking car, and I agree over the hood look is beautiful! 🤩

My dad had a brand new 76 Cadillac Eldorado, with the Astroroof, fully equipped with the 500cid fuel injection, more power and torque. VOGUE tyres, beautiful white on white with red dash & rug. We test drove both the 4bbl, & fuel injection. In 78 I got me a Mark V. It was the last year with the 460. The Caddy would jump ahead from a dead stop & kept pulling ahead of my Mark. But, that was the last of them beautiful AWESOME MASTERPIECES. Instead of those humongous SUVS, imagine these landyachts with today's technology. I'd buy 1,& trade in my 21 'Slade. Nice informative video, I enjoyed it, & drove down memory lane. THANKS!! My "V" had the"Miles To Empty" for which I NEVER trusted when it was down to 1/4 tank. Both were thirsty for AMOCO 93. But, well worth it, my dad's had a passenger light vanity, but, my "V" had both sides. Plus, it had the MOONROOF, what I truly missed on my Conti, was the Lamp Monitors that were on my dad's Eldo. ♥️🇺🇸👍👏 Remember, the movie"Donnie Brasco", when it begins the fellas are arguing about which was the better car, the Lincoln or Cadillac? That was my dad & I.

I own a "77" Mark V and a "78" Eldorado Biarritz. The author is definitely on the money with his rundown on these cars. My Mark has the 460 while Eldo has a 425. The Mark is snappier pick up wise and actually squeaks the rear tires loose going into 2nd if you open up that 4 barrel at the correct time. They're also crowd pleasers, as your lucky, if you ever see one of these mint bad boys cruising down the street nowadays.

Thank you so much sounds like you dig this video.. there was a point in time where I absolutely wanted. Nothing more more than a Mark five or a Chrysler cordoba or a two door Fleetwood those are really cool as well. Lincoln had a bunch of different seat options. The cars that I compared the Cadillac seats were better, but Lincoln had some really stellar leather seats if this car was equipped with that it would be perfect… Lincoln also made some stellar velour seats I had an 88 town car that was one of my favorite cars. If not my favorite car that I’ve ever owned with the pillow side seats. I really like that car. I kind of wish that I never sold it.

I had an "83" 2 door Fleetwood which was brand new. Not to many people know these cars still exist or ever did. Great car, only drawback was that pitiful HT 4100. You speak of some stellar leather leather interiors Lincoln had, check out my you tube video to see a truly sharp leather interior. I have the the complete Marti report on that Mark and there were only 7 of them made that were optioned as mine was. Your two look slick to me and very well maintained. You have to drive them though, otherwise they'll get ill. Keep that thought in mind !!

The Caddie in particular, is heavy and large with a monster engine, that has no grunt. I saw a 73 which had less rear legroom than a Mazda 2, and I wasn't surprised. Room for 10 bodies in the boot (trunk) and the front of the car got into town a few seconds before you. I love them still. Epic style over substance, terrible fuel economy, subdued (choked) engine power. All the glories of yesterday embodied on one. Troubled by your inability to teach history to your kids, show them one of these. Yet, one extra stand out feature, is the price. They seem so cheap compared to today's equivalent luxo barges.

Both are very nice.I like the Caddy better. I've actually driven both of them and as you mentioned, the seats are hard in the Lincoln. The engine compartment was easier to deal with in the Caddy. The Lincoln seemed to have masses of hosing within the engine compartment. The Caddy was simpler and easier to get around. I remember folks flocking to the dealer in 1976 to grab the Caddys since the mind set was Detroit isn't going to ever make them again. My college schoolmate bought a 71' El Dorado rag after graduation and that was a nice ride.

It’s hard to pick a definitive winner that’s why I said you couldn’t go wrong with either of them comes down to preference really but I do get your points there’s so many different pros and cons of each of them the link and it was featured was a basement model only options that I could find was the 8 track player and leather seats but they were the entry-level leather seats because they offered these really nice pillows side leather seats and it wasn’t them both of those cars could get really expensive with all the options they had to offer i’ve been in the Lincoln mark five with a cloth velour seats The cloth hello side seats are vastly more comfortable than these leather seats were it just depends on what seats I definitely see your point the Cadillac is definitely more accessible under the hood I agree with you I don’t understand why Lincoln needed all the plumbing underneath the hood it was especially like that later on years down the road I never understood why they needed all of the piping going seemingly nowhere

Three comments: 1) The Lincoln was a fabulous car, agree with your comments regarding the ride. You needed to take the Lincoln on the freeway at 80 mph with the windows rolled up and the A/C on, it is a life changing experience. 2) Judging from your comments on the Cadillac, the engine needs some work. The horrible mileage and poor acceleration implies a carburation problem, possibly ignition. In your case, fuel injection problem? 3) You totally stumped me on the song, i had to look in the comments.

I actually test-drove two of these back-to-back on the same day. Though the Eldorado was a 78 hardtop. I honestly prefer the Mark V. Discounting my bias of it being my favorite Lincoln, and the fact mine being a CA car was stuck with the 400, I found the experience better. I found the Cadillac to be sort of cramped, I don't think the seats were as comfortable, it felt cheaper inside, the visibility seemed poorer, and I wasn't a big fan of some of the control locations and gauge clusters. I'll grant the Caddie did feel a bit more powerful as far as horsepower (At least, with regards to 425 vs 400) and did feel a bit more planted and less vague in its steering. But the Lincoln was just an overall more pleasing car to be in, everything seemed to be laid out in a way I found much more preferable, and it was smoother and quieter than the Cadillac, and these cars are all about that.

@@What.its.like. I bought a brand new Mark V in 1977. I did have the 460 motor and the better two tone seats (maroon with the white inserts and maroon straps). I did order the car and paid $11,900 with a MSRP of $12,8000. I am 66 years old and still say it today that the Mark was the best car I ever owned. You really can't describe the ride unless you drove one, you absolutely felt nothing when you went over a bump. I still think about this car all the time.

Sitting in the back of any coupe is cramped for me, but yes the Mark IV and V are more roomy. It’s awesome you had the MK V and Eldorado, both side by side to compare. The Mark V interior is basically just like the Mark IV , same basic door cards, armrests , lights etc. Dash is identical just trimmed differently. I am surprised at the decontent of the backseat because my 72 mark four has a fold down armrest for the back. Plus my rear quarter's do open about two inches.. I’m guessing that’s just enough to flick cigarette ash out that kind of ridiculous so I guess they eliminated those in the MK V. Really the mark five is a redesign and skin only it’s just kind of like dropped over what is still a Mark IV underneath. Though for 72 the engine was stronger. I would hazard to guess that with the Cadillacs extra weight over that of the Mark V they probably have about the same performance numbers definitely the same driving feel. I believe in the sales numbers the Mark wins over the Eldorado just about every year and it truly was the quintessential 70s personal luxury coupe. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I agree the Lincoln is elegant to drive. It just makes you feel special, and thats what these cars were all about.

The tornado had crotch ventilators the Cadillac didn’t.. not saying that you need a crotch ventilator but I’m just saying why I put it in a lower class car and not have it in the higher class car is beyond me. I might be a little bit partial to Lincoln over Cadillac because I’ve owned Lincolns I’ve never owned a Cadillac.. I was impressed by how heavy and how big the Cadillac was it didn’t handle like as big of a car as it was, but with that said it just did it you didn’t feel I didn’t feel special driving the Cadillac whereas even the Lincoln though it was a basement model I felt special driving it.. it has a presence the Cadillac doesn’t. I like my perspective when driving the hood is a mile long and the Lincoln ornament really sets it off especially when it reflects back onto the hood. I don’t really care for the quality of the interior. There’s a lot of plastic and fake cheap looking wood that I don’t think a car that was 17,500 in 1976 should have used. The mark III had the best interior out of all the marks in my opinion it was more quality and consumer focused than profit focused.

I own multiple classic cars and having owned both 70’s Cadillacs and currently owning a 78 Lincoln Continental and a 79 Mark V Cartier edition, the both Lincoln’s are literally the smoothest driving cars I have ever owned hands down. The 78 Lincoln Continental specifically. They have tighter feeling, more rigid solidly put together bodies than the 70’s Cadillacs and Lincoln’s spring rates are much more softly sprung than Caddy’s by far. BTW the 77-79 Mark V8’s weigh anywhere between 4,850lbs-5,020lbs curb weight depending on the year and the options. The sound package option, and designer series Marks,I believe used extra sound deadening material and the seats were of higher quality trim and padding thus adding the extra weight. One thing I will say that I do not like in my Lincoln’s is the really crappy interior quality with all the cheap flimsy plastic especially on the dash. Certain switches and knobs feel extremely flimsy and the fit and finish just wasn’t that good I feel compared to the Eldorado which had much nicer interior materials IMO than the Mark V. But Overall the Lincoln just feel better built and is more isolated from the road. The 71-76 Cads had interior rattles as they aged, the Lincoln’s never rattle. I think a lot has to do with the frame under these Lincoln’s being so overbuilt and Ford adding extra bracing and torque boxes on these Lincoln frames vs the Caddy’s. Jack up a similar year 70’s Caddy and Lincoln and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I love both brands, but as for the 70’s go, it’s Lincoln all the way for total quietness, riding smoothness and overall build quality. The 60’s it’s kind of tie, but overall I like 60’s Cadillacs much better than the 60’s Lincoln Continentals of the day because I’ve also owned a 61 Lincoln Conti. I can’t stand unibody’s and those cars are notorious for rusting out and they’re generally very complex cars to work on. Great build quality though thats for sure. The 50’s was all Cadillac. Lincoln didn’t even really compete in that era.

@@What.its.like. They definitely are, that’s why I don’t think I could ever sell my Lincoln’s, they ride too smoothly to let go. Not even modern vehicles ride as smooth or glide down the road like a 70’s Lincoln. I know because I’ve driven late model S-Classes which do ride extremely well, but they still don’t have the same kind of road isolation from harsh road impacts or that floaty squishy plush ride like my 78 Continental does. Plus even S-Class seats are hard as rock compared to my couch like cloth bench seat in my Lincoln where you literally sink in into them and it’s absolutely plush and comfortable. No modern car seat even compares or comes close to the plush comfort of car seats of 70’s luxury vehicles, nothing, period.

Lovin' the Lincoln. Those angular lines, long hood + oval opera windows. It's a classy looking car. Cadillac was likely a firmer ride due to being a heavy convertible. Don't like Caddy dash. Idiot lights & fuel gauge hard to see. Yep! Those Ford steering wheels were generic. So were the dome lights. They changed stuff in the 80's though. Not that I mind the Mark V, but kind of too bad you didn't compare it with the 1976 Mark IV I drive a 1975 Mark IV and have done for 20 years now. I have previously driven Cadillacs. A 1973 Coupe dé Ville for 9 years and a 1978 Fleetwood limousine for 5 years. Mark IV - only available with 460 cui 04:21 I love the quality of the crome panel on the Cadillac doors. 04:40 in 1975 the Mark IV came with automatic seatback release. Open door gave free access to the rear seat. Closed to locked the seat back. 04:50 Where the Marks have an ashtray in the doors for the rear seat passengers, the Eldorado has a door handle for the rear seat passengers in the right door. Great idea for getting out. 08:06 The vanity mirrors with high/low beam lights in the Eldorado, look exactly like the ones I have standard in my 1975 Mark IV - Left AND right. 09:09 The daytime/night time switch on the mirror is supposed to be UP and out of sight in the daytime. You pull it down at night. 10:01 The glove box compartment is a joke in the Mark IV and V. My husband loves to tease me about it. Well, in his MX-5 there is NONE :-) 11:10 The rear seat passanger door handle deserves attention. 11:43 My 1973 Coupe dé Ville had a better white leather seat with arm rest. 11:50 Mark V here. "You just move the seat like this" because of automatic seat back release. 12.:47 Mark IV cars have back seat center armrests and in general a nicer leather seat design. 14:40 Cadillacs in general has a much better cornering light, because it is located high and lights up the corner better. 15:31 Lincolns in general including the Continental Marks have the cornering lights too low. They are not nearly as efficient as ones on Cadillacs. On modern cars this function has more or less moved over to the fog lamps. 15:17 The headlight doors on Mark V cars have - like most other Lincoln Mercury and FoMoCo cars with concealed headlights have TWO vacuum motors. One for each headlight. Mark IV cars have only one. It means on Mark IV cars the doors always open evenly. You will never see a cross-eyed or with only one door open or closed. 16:26 With a full size spare tire, the trunk is not all that big compared to a dé Ville or Fleetwood. 17:25 The trunk in a Mark IV / Mark V is SMALL. It can only take one medium Samsonite hard suitcase + sailer sports bag. 23:26 I often have to help new right side front passengers find the inside door handle in my Mark IV. 24:12 I think the ignition needs ajustment. 5 miles = 1/4 tank sounds VERY wrong. 25:34 The steering wheel in Mark V models - other than the designer series is "cheap" without the faux wood trim inlay. All 1975 Mark IV cars have that. In many ways I am indifferent between the cars. I miss my 1973 triple white Coupe dé Ville, but I like my Mark IV so much, that I after 20 years of driving it, am having it renovated with new vinyl roof, and new all over paint. I want it to last my life time. It is so relaxing and enjoyable to drive and such a joy just to look at. Mogens

I totally agree the Mark five is just a better car to me.. The Mark five has a special place in my heart it was definitely better driving experience in the Cadillac in my opinion the Cadillac seats were nicer but Lincoln offered like five or six different seat options and these were the basement leather seats

Even though I prefer Lincolns, the Cadillac wins. Fuel injection. Overall nicer features. More power. Also a lot of nice little touches get deleted to hit a price point.

Having owned both a ‘78 Mark V Diamond Jubilee Edition (460) and a ‘78 Eldorado Biarritz, (425 and not a convertible) I can say that both are great cars. However, my choice would be the Mark V. They are both beautiful and both drive very well, but the Mark is just more luxurious. The Eldorado does not ride nearly as well, but has a slightly ‘sporty’ feel to it. Those soft Cadillac seats feel great at first, but for long distance travel the Lincoln seats are much better. The trunks were both small by the standard of the day - the Cadillac seemed to have more useful space due to the placement of the spare tire. The Mark V was much more solid and rattle free than the Eldorado. One small point in favor of the Caddy - I am a tall guy and when the transmission is in drive in the Lincoln, the gear lever gets in the way of my right knee. No such issue with the Caddy. As Jay said, it’s down to personal preference. You can’t really go wrong with either car. They are both beautiful and fun to drive. MPG in both was low to mid teens, but that isn’t really a concern is it? These are all about fun and stylish comfort! I have daily driven older cars since 1997 and I am here to tell ya - you can afford a lotta gasoline without a car payment…

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience it really means a lot I totally agree the Cadillac seats are comfortable but I haven’t taken it on a really long drive I think that’s why a lot of people think that the Cadillac ride better because of the sea quality the seats in the Lincoln weren’t nice leather seats they were the basement leather seats if memory serves correct winking offered six different seat times during that era lots of different seat options but they had really nice leather pillow side seats maybe do a pillow side but they were way worse year than the seats in this car

All those cars would well over 100mph. You would bury the needle at 100 and probably get close to 120. Both of those cars powers were detuned for gas mileage and emmissions mandates by 1976.

Yeah I should worded it different like the top speed the car can record is 120mph the car may or may not go that speed by that is the highest the speedometer can track its speed to =D

Me to the Lincoln in this video didn’t have good seats it would have been head and shoulders better than the Cadillac.. that Cadillac got really really bad gas mileage and the power wasn’t all that much better. I want to drive a Lincoln with a 460 I never drove a mark five with a 460 I’ve gotten to drive a couple mark fives but all of them have had the 400. The car needs another gear if it had the AOD transmission or a four speed or a five speed would be even better that car would be incredible with a five speed. The gears in the one I drove seemed tall and didn’t have the kick down power my 88 Lincoln had.

Hi I love American cars… or rather find it a point of interest. I prefer European cars, specifically French, and more specifically Citroën. I have a 1982 Citroën CX Prestige. Ever heard of the Citroën SM? Check it out. Love your videos. Can reviewers get the cars up on a lift and look at the chassis design as well?

You can't compare the quality of the ride between a hardtop and convertible. The latter will never drive as smooth as its hardtop counterpart. The Lincoln may very well provide a smoother ride but you would need a hardtop Eldorado for equal judging.
