This Volvo is powered by a 3.8l 2-Stroke V8 engine

When boredom and a few too many beers strike, remarkable ideas can be born. This was precisely the case for Swedish enthusiasts Henrik Söderlund and Morgan Gerdin, who decided to embark on an audacious project: fitting a 400hp, two-stroke V8 engine into a Volvo Amazon, resulting in a mind-boggling creation that turned heads and surely annoyed neighbors. Let's delve into the story behind this wild venture and explore the unconventional marriage of a 1980s Evinrude 300XP marine V8 and the iconic Volvo 120.
.Inspiration struck the creators when they were under the influence of alcohol. Henrik recalls the moment, saying, "It came to us when we were drunk. I had the motor in my boat. It was in the garage for some service and tuning. I happened to park the boat with the engine hanging next to the Amazon, and a few beers later the picture cleared." Little did they know that this seemingly boozy epiphany would lead to an extraordinary automotive experiment.
The heart of this unique vehicle is a 3.6-liter Evinrude 300XP two-stroke marine V8, which originated from the 1980s era. Henrik and Morgan ingeniously shoehorned this potent engine into the body of the Volvo Amazon, giving birth to a fusion of automotive and marine technologies. The original engine produced 340hp on the crank, but with the addition of customized expansion chambers, extensive porting, and electronic fuel injection (EFI), the power output is expected to increase significantly.
While the precise power band of this unconventional creation remains unknown, the enthusiasts have already revved it up to 5200rpm. However, the tuned expansion chambers are designed for up to 6500rpm, and with a rev limit set at 8500rpm, there is immense untapped power waiting to be unleashed. Henrik confidently states, "With the pipes, extensive porting and EFI, it should make more!" The prospect of further tuning promises even more breathtaking performance from this Swedish masterpiece.
Now they didn’t stop with the engine swop, To accommodate the massive power of the two-stroke V8, the creators made several modifications to the vehicle. They fitted a customized Powerglide transmission and a Volvo/Dana four-link rear end, ensuring optimal power delivery and control. Additionally, a pair of colossal 33×10.5-inch drag slicks provides the necessary grip to harness the car's potential. Remarkably, only 30kg of the original structure of the Volvo Amazon remains intact, resulting in a svelte weight of 683kg. This substantial weight reduction, combined with the awe-inspiring power output, should enable the Swedish creation to tear down the strip with astonishing speed.

I got 155rear wheel hp out of my RG500's (had 2) And it was not even that hard... The worst part was getting a swing arm on that thing that fitted a rear tire wider than 130, to get any use for the power. So, this 3.8... I should not be too hard to tune for 1500+ since it got tuned for 10 seconds at full power between check ups, instead of road traffic. I wonder what it ended up with on the dyno?

You are mistaken on the time frame of 2 strokes going away. Primarily in the past 10 years. Due to emissions requirements. Look up mercury 300xs Evinrude was the last with a full lineup of 2 strokes. Canadian company Bombardier bought Evinrude then shut them down in 2020. The oldest existing US boat motor manufacturer. The 2 stroke Etec motors had lower emissions than the 4 strokes. Because they used direct injection not fake efi injection. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evinrude_Outboard_Motors

2 stroke outboards were made up until the late 2000's here in the USA, and are still made in most countries around the world since they dont need to contend with the EPA's stupid restrictions. 2 stroke outboards polluted so little they hardly even registered, but SUV's and "light trucks" can spew whatever that want.

Well at least it makes for good you tube content. I've never cared much for 2-strokes myself just because if they're not in tip top condition they are not reliable at all. You never know if they're going to start up when you want them to, you have to carry spare spark plugs and wrenches, crankshaft seals always wear out and create vacuum leaks that cause the engine to run lean and burn pistons, and then cylinders usually go out with the pistons. And what about when the oil gets broken down by the gasoline, how much lubrication is still there when the oil is all saturated down by the gasoline??? Yes, electric fuel injection is probably the best thing to ever happen to a 2-stroke engine, but look at how much fuel they waste, could that car ever be used as a daily driven mass production vehicle? They smoke almost as much as an old coal burning locomotive steam train... I wonder how much global warming there would be in the world today if the 2-stroke engine were the only option. Makes me think about the Trabant, I think Saab made one also, strangest cars on the planet.

in an outboard, they are EXTREMELY reliable. in my 35 years as an outboard mechanic, i've only seen bad crank seals on motors from the early 70's and older. gasoline does not "break down" oil! If they are stored properly, carb issues are rare. but 99% of issues are because the owner used old fuel, or didnt maintain and use the correct oil, or overloaded the boat, water in fuel etc. smoke is non-existent or very little once the motor warms up and synthetic is used. the motor you see here is running rich AND using 25:1 oil mix since its running on the ragged edge.

You've clearly had some crappy 2-strokes. Try a good one.

Too smokey. Too bad they didn't use an engine with oil injection like the Etec. And why only a 2 speed automatic? The Mercury 600hp V-12 would be better.

its running double oil. once warmed up, smoke is a non issue with 50:1 or even 100:1. they are also running it pig rich to extend its life.

Iv been watching it closely for years on and off and from what I can tell it's a 9 sec car and about 550-600hp although I haven't seen dyno data. I will say for the engine to be in a drag car they did this wrong. By that I mean these things with pipes and stock ports dont come online until 6-7krpm those pipes should be set up to work up in the 7-10k rpm range and the limiter should be 10500or 11. But their swedes I have confidence they'll figure it out. I'd expect based off similar builds over the years It can make a healthy 800or so hp but I bet you can shove a crap ton of n2o down its throat and make whatever he needs even now. But fi and 2 strokes are kinda a pain di is really the way to go although that much more complicated. Not to say it cant be done in an aftermarket setting just that it's hard. The oems put injectors in transfer ports and such for a reason if you look at jet skis and scooters and mx bikes. This is pretty hard to add after the engine is made. I also belive he is injecting even further down stream at the tb making this problem worse is the fact it's made to be mounted on the flywheel although gravity would work better upside down from what it is.

no. the F1 V8 put out around 450hp, and had a 150hp shot of nitrous for the world record attempt. even at 450hp, it would have a 30 hr service life max. the F1 of the 1980's was far more advanced than this stock powerhead.
