The best example of this effect has to be Initiation by The Weeknd, it's the whole song with the formant shifting automated, and that was 2012.

Varispeed is a very old trick used on analog recordings such as MJ's BAD album. Some of his hits were sped up by 4-5% compared to their original recording speed. Nice video.

@@JohnnyDubb23 I spoke to some of the engineers who worked on the album, and also for instance listen to "The Way You Make Me Feel", it isn't in a specific key, it's in between 2, because it was sped up via varispeed, not by a certain fixed amount, but sped up until they thought the track sounded good and danceable. The original speed when listening to the original multitrack is around 5% slower than what you hear on the record.

@@JohnnyDubb23 compare Another Part Of Me album version with the 2012 remaster as an example. Also you can kind of hear when a song is speed up. The Jacksons - Can You Feel It from 1980 for example, MJ sounds like Mickey Mouse lol

  • @robinraf

yooo if you want to create a high pitched sped up drake sample you can do the opposite aswell! record your vocals with the varispeed slowed down (like -15%) and then pitch it back up again. now remove the highs, add some reverb and it’ll sound godlike

The Beatles had 4-channel studer recorders modified to use the varispeed technique. Sometimes they record instruments an octave down at half the speed of the song and then when played back at normal speed, they sound an octave up and with a different tone. They also recorded songs a little faster and then lowered the speed of the tape and consequently the time and several semitones so that the sound seemed more dreamlike, for example in the song Rain from 1966 this effect is very well achieved. Very good video, greetings from Argentina.
