    My dad was born in Morenci. My grandfather worked at the Morenci mines all of his life. Drove the largest mining trucks of their day. I've been there many, many times. 🙌🏼 Yes, please do a mining town in Arizona video. That would be terrific!

    Bro you got to cover Kearny, AZ. It’s a small copper mining town 25 miles east of Superior. Hayden/Winkleman is also another mining town just 10 miles down the road. Kearny is a very nice town with a low crime rate and right on the Gila River.

    Morenci is a fabulous mine. About 700,000 tons of earth of moved every day, 365 days a year. The ore deposit is very generous and has exceptional quality. The mine has a life span to last many decades. Freeport is a great employer. The town of Morenci is owned by Freeport and provides housing to employees at good rates. There are 12 electric rope shovels and a fleet of nearly 160 heavy haul trucks to excavate copper ore, and uses many methods to extract the copper from the ore.

    The Morenci mine is low grade ore. That is why it is done in the open pit technique.

  • @southdust117

    @southdust117

    It has a "low grade" as in the copper is dispersed in qualities less than 5% in the overall chemical make up of the the geologic setting. The copper is within copper bearing minerals such as Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) or Chrysocolla (Cu₂H₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄) in these forms the copper is only a fraction of the total make of the mineral and then these minerals are only a fraction of the total geologic setting. That being said there is a a massive abundance of these minerals dispersed in a huge surface area and great depth. It is not an open pit mine because it is "low grade" it is an open pit mine because that is the most economic way to most effectively extract the most copper with the lowest amount of waste. Copper grades in Morenci range in the 0.2% Total Copper per ton to extremely high concentrations of over 2% Total copper per ton.

Thanks, for exploring Arizona for me.

    I currently work and live in Morenci (13 years) and couple fun facts that weren’t covered, the “town” of Morenci has been moved three times in the search of copper, and Morenci mine is the 3rd largest consumer of electricity in Az running 12 electric shovels 7200 volts each and the mill and crushers running on electric power.

    Most of the commenters know this, but the area you call Morenci was called Plantsite until the 1980’s. The original town of Morenci was “swallowed “ by the open pit. Another, nearby, town named Metcalf was swallowed by the open pit in the 1930’s. Other similar towns are Ray, Az and Santa Rita, NM.

The high school I attended isnt there any more. as you drove through the big tunel and traveled a little farther the road make an horse shoe turn and start to go up a hill. In the middle of the corner, there was a road turned right that lead to Old Morenci and the High school and one of the elementary schools. Continue up 191 you will see a man made mountain that was not there. That was Stargo. Want some more infor. leave message. My oldest son drive the dump trucks now.

    A little bit of advice for you when you make a video is please let your viewers know when you're gonna take a break from doing voiceover/commentary. You spoke continously for the 1st half of the video then you went silent just like that. I thought something was wrong with the audio. Then you started talking again so I'm glad I didn't turn it up real loud when I was trying to figure out if something was wrong with the audio. Then again, with no warning, you stopped talking again. By now I was used to it but it was not any less annoying. Other than that, great video. I enjoyed the video footage you filmed and edited together. Thank you
