Living in Arizona is quite a unique experience because of the vastness that the state offers. From the Sonoran Desert in the south to the high country in the north all the way up towards the Four Corners east and the Grand Canyon in the west. Known as the Grand Canyon state, Arizona is diverse in many ways. The state tree is the Palo Verde, the state cactus is the Saguaro, the state bird is the Cactus wren. My dad was born in Morenci. My grandfather worked at the Morenci mines all of his life. Drove the largest mining trucks of their day. I've been there many, many times. 🙌🏼 Yes, please do a mining town in Arizona video. That would be terrific!
Yes, please do a video series on the copper mines. My great-grandfather worked for the copper mining company and set up the first general stores in Jerome, Morenci, and Bisbee at the turn of the century early 1900's.

Is it still in Bisbee? I would love to have coffee with you and hear some stories
My dad worked in Morenci from 1972-1985. He was an ironworker that helped build many do the things you see there. In 1985 we moved to Kearny and he worked in Hayden, more mining towns. Would love to see you tour the mine and towns there
Morienci is the second largest mine in the WORLD. The biggest is in Chile. GREAT VIDEO AND INFO. Keep up the great work. Thanks

3rd, and it's copper mine not just mine. Third largest copper mine
I went to school at Bullion Plaza in 5th and 6th grade. A road trip of mining towns would be great! Love your AZ road trips Jeff, I grew up there and I miss it.
Yes, please do a video on the mining towns. Thanks for all of the info you give us in every video.
Loved love loved this. Lived in Morenci for a short time in the 80's. Enjoyed the ride this video! Yes please more copper mining town videos. Thanks.. 😺
I love that area! Everything along the 60 to 70 to 191. Globe, Miami, Safford, Clifton, Duncan and Morenci.
Bro you got to cover Kearny, AZ. It’s a small copper mining town 25 miles east of Superior. Hayden/Winkleman is also another mining town just 10 miles down the road. Kearny is a very nice town with a low crime rate and right on the Gila River.
Morenci is a fabulous mine. About 700,000 tons of earth of moved every day, 365 days a year. The ore deposit is very generous and has exceptional quality. The mine has a life span to last many decades. Freeport is a great employer. The town of Morenci is owned by Freeport and provides housing to employees at good rates. There are 12 electric rope shovels and a fleet of nearly 160 heavy haul trucks to excavate copper ore, and uses many methods to extract the copper from the ore.

The Morenci mine is low grade ore. That is why it is done in the open pit technique.

It has a "low grade" as in the copper is dispersed in qualities less than 5% in the overall chemical make up of the the geologic setting. The copper is within copper bearing minerals such as Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) or Chrysocolla (Cu₂H₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄) in these forms the copper is only a fraction of the total make of the mineral and then these minerals are only a fraction of the total geologic setting. That being said there is a a massive abundance of these minerals dispersed in a huge surface area and great depth. It is not an open pit mine because it is "low grade" it is an open pit mine because that is the most economic way to most effectively extract the most copper with the lowest amount of waste. Copper grades in Morenci range in the 0.2% Total Copper per ton to extremely high concentrations of over 2% Total copper per ton.

@@southdust117 Nothing you said contradicts what I said other than contradicting yourself vis a vis the open pit discussion. Read your post carefully. Lol
My grandpa, my mother and I all born in Morenci. I live far away now and appreciate this video and scenery.
GABA Tucson used to have the Blue Loop Tour that started in Morenci and looped up thru Glenwood and Alpie, then down 666. Best bicycle tour ever! Did that tour many times. Fantastic country
I was born and raised in Clifton, it's a good place to be from.
Great Video and great back ground music. Looking forward to your mining town video....................
Jeff...JEFF!!! I live in Gold Canyon, so of course, I know about Superior, Globe and Miama...but you introduced me to so many other communities I didn't know existed. This is what you ALWAYS do. You show me different parts of Arizona I didn't know existed. I want to save every community that is dying. I want to make them alive again. I'd have to be Elon Musk rich to do that. Thanks, for exploring Arizona for me.
I currently work and live in Morenci (13 years) and couple fun facts that weren’t covered, the “town” of Morenci has been moved three times in the search of copper, and Morenci mine is the 3rd largest consumer of electricity in Az running 12 electric shovels 7200 volts each and the mill and crushers running on electric power.
Thank your for showing where my grandfather was born (Morenci). I hope to visit this place one day. Greetings from France.

Great video....we live in rural Pinal close to Oracle and drove that way to stay in a cabin at Roper Lake....great road trip great time....
Great video and factually correct. I work for Komatsu in Mesa, Arizona. I spend allot of time in the mining towns you mentioned. FCX happens to be one of our largest customers.
I’ve been meaning to go east for some exploring, but wasn’t sure if it would be worth it. Thanks for sharing this. I’ll probably take a trip out to Superior, first, since it’s a day trip for me, and visit the arboretum.
I need to explore these areas more!!! thanks Jeff
Thank you for this. This entire trip took me down memory lane. Can’t believe how many of the same structures are still functional!

Yes please more mining/prospecting related videos!
on monday goes my flight zo AZ, im so excited :D
Most of the commenters know this, but the area you call Morenci was called Plantsite until the 1980’s. The original town of Morenci was “swallowed “ by the open pit. Another, nearby, town named Metcalf was swallowed by the open pit in the 1930’s. Other similar towns are Ray, Az and Santa Rita, NM.
Only been in Az for 2 years and always enjoy your ventures around Az. Thanks
Once again Jeff good video would like to see the mines in AZ
Thanks for the tour of Thatcher and Safford. I lived in Safford in the mid 70's and attenfrf EAC. After seeing this I may take a roadtrip thru there while headed to New Mexico.
Marvelous video!
Awesome video! I can’t wait to move back to Phoenix and do some exploring.
when you make your next youtube video on all of arizona mines and towns will that also include the magma copper bhp mine in san manuel arizona
Just an FYI ... between Miami and Globe is Claypool. The area with the Walmart is Claypool.
wow, very underated places...I need to explore the NE
nice video ,very informative with lots of history.
Yes do the mining tour. I’m in New Mexico near two more big copper mines in Silver City. Freeport is a huge employer here as well. Love to hear about the industry and it’s towns. If you happen to cross the border 1-2 hours east you’ll be here haha. Thanks for the great video
Morenci is a census-designated place and company town in Greenlee County.
I was born and raised in Morenci. My dad and older brother worked for Phelps Dodge at that time. I was born in 62 and graduated in 80. The high school I attended isnt there any more. as you drove through the big tunel and traveled a little farther the road make an horse shoe turn and start to go up a hill. In the middle of the corner, there was a road turned right that lead to Old Morenci and the High school and one of the elementary schools. Continue up 191 you will see a man made mountain that was not there. That was Stargo. Want some more infor. leave message. My oldest son drive the dump trucks now.
I was born in Safford. My family is from the Clifton/ Morenci area.
I didn't see retired shovel on side of road. It's bigger than a house!
Would love to see mining town video
People who wanna homestead in Arizona who can't tap well or rain collectors should look up atmosphere to water technology. Takes the moisture from the air and turns it into drinking water. There is personal/house use and larger size to work for the entire house

@@randypaul7312 these machines are proven to work on Sahara and the Andes mountains. A man goes and builds these things for communities that have no access to it. But you can also buy them for home use. It'll still work.
You should also do videos about mining town in north Sonora, like Cananea
Nice video 😊
We came down from I40 on 191. My GPS said don’t go that way. It was beautiful but quite twisty. Then ended up in Morenci. It was shockingly beautiful. We couldn’t imagine the size of it.
So the population dropped in 2010 from the stock market crash or 08-09 when 50% of workers were laid off. But they were rehired and replace by 2011-12. Morenci is currently the largest its ever been population wise. They have built hundred of houses since 2010
Do you have a Video of Young , AZ ?
The price of copper is about to skyrocket.
Born and raised there
9:18 is downtown safford.
I live and work here in the Clifton area..... Chase Creek in Clifton was more dangerous then tombstone back in the day..... I wouldn't venture out here for the next year due to lots of road construction going on
I would love to see more about Oatman.
A little bit of advice for you when you make a video is please let your viewers know when you're gonna take a break from doing voiceover/commentary. You spoke continously for the 1st half of the video then you went silent just like that. I thought something was wrong with the audio. Then you started talking again so I'm glad I didn't turn it up real loud when I was trying to figure out if something was wrong with the audio. Then again, with no warning, you stopped talking again. By now I was used to it but it was not any less annoying. Other than that, great video. I enjoyed the video footage you filmed and edited together. Thank you
Mines go away..still would be a decent retirement place. Moderate weather
Nice video! Morenci is technically a "man camp". Freeport McMoRan owns Morenci9( except for a couple of small pieces of property). The rent's cheap, & utilities are cheap.
I grew up in a tiny town in Washington state. Its now booming with buildings in the historic downtown core being converted to mixed use - - shops on the ground floors & condos above them. Is that happening in any of the towns you show on your channel?
Worked on Metcalf building upgrade . Worked on whole project, except pit

The area between. Safford and Clifton is known as the Black Hills, if you are purporting to know Arizona you should know that. Tourist.
